If the image cannot be saved directly, Firefox Screenshots can download a selected, visible region. For many URLs or automated exports, a screenshot API is more practical.
Saving a file does not grant permission to publish or redistribute it. Before reusing an image, check the source page’s license and terms, then meet any attribution or other conditions.
1. Save a normal image directly in Chrome
Chrome’s context-menu method is the fastest option when the page exposes an ordinary image element.
- Open the webpage containing the image.
- Right-click the image.
- Select Save Image As.
- Choose a destination folder when prompted and click Save.
Chrome places the file in its configured download location. To change that location, open Settings > Downloads. Direct saving may preserve the supplied image file rather than a view of the page, so it is normally the highest-fidelity free method for a single image.

When this method is appropriate
- A single image is visible and the context menu offers Save Image As.
- You need the supplied file rather than a screenshot of surrounding text or controls.
- You are working occasionally and do not need automation.
When it is not enough
A page may not expose an image that can be saved from the context menu, or you may need a page region, several images, or repeatable exports. Use the fallback and automation methods below instead of trying to defeat a site’s access controls.
2. Use Firefox Screenshots when direct saving is unavailable
Firefox Screenshots is a browser fallback for a visible image, interface graphic, or page region.
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Open Screenshots.
- Select the area containing the image.
- Click Download.
The capture is downloaded as an image file in the same folder Firefox uses for downloads. You can also use Ctrl+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+S on macOS, to save.
This method records rendered pixels. The official documentation does not promise that it retrieves the original file or its original resolution. Text, browser scaling, overlays, and the selected crop can therefore affect the result.

Direct download versus screenshot

3. Find a lawful source image with Google Images
Google Images is a discovery tool, not a blanket permission slip. Use it to locate the source and its licensing information.
- Search for the image in Google Images.
- Select Tools > Usage rights to narrow results.
- Open the candidate image and select License details.
- Visit the source page and read the specific license and any linked requirements before downloading or reusing the image.
Google says Creative Commons images are usually available at no charge, but a particular license may require credit or restrict modification or commercial use. Commercial and other licenses may require payment. Treat the filter as a way to find licensing information, not as a guarantee that every result is free for every purpose.
4. Apply the license before publishing or redistributing
A successful download answers only where the bytes came from. It does not answer whether you may publish, edit, sell, or redistribute them. Check the image’s license and the website’s terms for the use you actually intend: personal reference, education, a client project, advertising, or commercial publication can have different consequences.

- Give appropriate credit.
- Provide a link to the license.
- Indicate whether you made changes.
The license deed also warns that privacy, publicity, moral rights, or other permissions may affect your intended use. Creative Commons explains that license conditions must be followed when the use would otherwise require permission; violating them can terminate the permission and expose you to infringement claims.
Keep a simple rights record
- Save the source-page URL and the date you checked it.
- Record the exact license name and version.
- Copy the required credit wording, if supplied.
- Note any edits you made and retain evidence of permission for a nonstandard use.

6. Choose the right workflow
- Occasional single image: use Chrome’s direct save.
- Visible region or graphic that cannot be saved directly: use Firefox Screenshots and accept that it is a rendered-pixel capture.
- Images discovered through search: verify the source page’s license and apply its conditions before reuse.
- Repeated pages, full-page exports, custom viewports, or bulk work: use an API with explicit waits, selectors, request controls, and delivery options.
7. Troubleshooting
“Save Image As” is missing
Use Firefox Screenshots to select the visible image or region. This produces a screenshot rather than promising the original file.
The downloaded file is in the wrong folder
Check the browser’s configured download location. In Chrome, use Settings > Downloads; Firefox uses its normal download folder for Screenshots.

The screenshot looks softer than expected
A screenshot records rendered pixels, so browser zoom, viewport size, and the image’s on-screen dimensions affect fidelity. Prefer direct saving when the original file is available. For automated captures, set an appropriate viewport and retina scale.
A Google Images result has no clear permission
Open the candidate’s source page and inspect License details and the source terms. If the actual license is unclear, do not assume the image is free to publish or redistribute.
An automated capture shows a banner or widget
