Play Red Dead Redemption 2 first, complete its main story and epilogue, then play Red Dead Redemption. The chronology runs from 1899 to 1911. After Red Dead Redemption, you can play Undead Nightmare as an optional zombie-horror side story. Red Dead Revolver is a separate frontier tale and is not required for the Redemption saga.
The correct first-time order
The two connected Redemption games are best experienced in story chronology rather than release order. Start with the 2018 game, follow its story through the epilogue, and then move to the 2010 game.
- Red Dead Redemption 2: play the main story and finish the epilogue. Its events begin in 1899 and follow Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang during the dying days of the outlaw era.
- Red Dead Redemption: play John Marston’s 1911 campaign. It is the chronological continuation of the saga and picks up the consequences of the earlier game.
- Undead Nightmare (optional): play it after finishing Red Dead Redemption if you want a self-contained zombie-horror campaign. It is alternate fiction, not a required chapter of the main arc.
- Red Dead Revolver (optional): play it only if you want another western from Rockstar’s catalogue. It is a separate frontier story, so you can skip it without losing continuity.
Why this order works
GameTimeline’s September 2026 chronology identifies one connected sequence: Red Dead Redemption 2 in 1899 followed by Red Dead Redemption in 1911. That order lets the older game function as the intended next chapter instead of requiring you to jump backward in time after meeting the later history of its characters.

Red Dead Redemption 2 establishes the gang, its relationships and the collapse of the outlaw period through Arthur Morgan’s perspective. Its epilogue is part of the handoff, not disposable bonus material: finish it before opening Red Dead Redemption. The later game then centers on John Marston, a former outlaw forced by federal agents to pursue members of the gang he once called friends. Rockstar’s store describes Red Dead Redemption as the predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster, but “predecessor” refers to release history; in the fiction, it follows the 1899 story.
Playing chronologically also preserves the broad arc from gang life to the aftermath of that life. Starting with the newer game may feel unusual because it released later, but release date does not determine the characters’ timeline.
Chronological order versus release order
| Order type | Sequence | What it prioritizes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story chronology | Red Dead Redemption 2 (1899) → Red Dead Redemption (1911) | A continuous timeline and the full Marston-related arc | The older game follows the newer game technically and visually |
| Original release order | Red Dead Redemption (2010) → Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | The order in which audiences first received the games | You experience the 1911 story before its historical setup |
| Expanded optional route | Chronological order, then Undead Nightmare | The main saga followed by a separate horror campaign | The tone and fiction of the optional campaign are deliberately different |
For a first playthrough, choose chronology. Release order remains a valid preference for someone who wants the original audience’s perspective or who has already completed both games, but it is not the clearest route for a newcomer asking how the events unfold.
What to play in Red Dead Redemption 2
Play the main story without skipping the epilogue
Begin with Red Dead Redemption 2 and treat the epilogue as the final required portion of that game. The main story introduces Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang in 1899; the epilogue completes the transition toward the circumstances of the 1911 game. Stopping when the credits first appear leaves the chronological bridge unfinished.
You do not need to complete every optional activity, challenge or collectible before moving on. The requirement for the narrative order is to finish the story and epilogue. If you want a completionist run, make a separate manual save before the final story stretch so you can return to exploration without replaying the entire campaign.
Do not switch to Red Dead Redemption halfway through
The games are separate campaigns. Starting the 1911 adventure before completing the 1899 story creates a deliberate time jump and can expose you to context that the earlier game is designed to establish. Finish the epilogue, record your save, and only then install or launch the next title.
What to expect from Red Dead Redemption
The 1911 continuation
Red Dead Redemption moves the timeline to 1911 and places John Marston at the center. Its premise is direct: federal agents threaten John’s family and force him to hunt the gang members he once knew. Because you have just completed the earlier game, that pursuit carries the history established in 1899 rather than appearing as an unexplained assignment.
Approach it as a complete second campaign, not as downloadable content for Red Dead Redemption 2. The change in release generation, interface and presentation is normal. The chronological benefit comes from the story connection, not from expecting the two games to play identically.

When to move on
Finish the main Red Dead Redemption story before deciding whether to add Undead Nightmare. The standard campaign is the endpoint of the connected two-game arc. Optional activities can wait; they are not prerequisites for understanding the 1911 narrative.
Where Undead Nightmare belongs
Play it after Red Dead Redemption
Undead Nightmare is an optional alternate-fiction campaign set around the world and characters associated with Red Dead Redemption. Its zombie-horror premise changes the genre and tone, so it should follow the standard 1911 story rather than interrupt it.
You do not need it to understand either main game. If your goal is only the connected western narrative, stop after Red Dead Redemption. If you want the complete set of campaigns associated with the first game, launch Undead Nightmare afterward and treat it as a separate experience with its own rules and atmosphere.
Rank #3
Why it should not be placed between the two main games
Putting the zombie campaign between Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Redemption breaks the intended transition from 1899 to 1911. The optional campaign is classified as alternate fiction, so it does not provide a missing chronological chapter or explain the setup of John’s main story.

Red Dead Revolver is a separate frontier tale, not an entry in the Redemption continuity described by the two main games. It can be played before, after or not at all without changing the order of Red Dead Redemption 2, Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare.
For a reader whose priority is the Redemption story, skipping it is the efficient choice. Add it only when you want a different western adventure and are comfortable treating it as its own narrative rather than searching for a required connection.
A practical first-time playthrough plan
- Choose your edition of Red Dead Redemption 2. Select the version that provides the story mode. Online features are not required for the narrative sequence.
- Start a dedicated story save. Avoid overwriting it with experimental saves if you intend to return for exploration or completion work later.
- Complete the 1899 campaign. Follow the main missions and allow the game to proceed into its epilogue.
- Finish the epilogue. This is the handoff point to the 1911 story. Do not treat the first credits as the end of the recommended order.
- Take a short break or review your notes. A pause can help you separate the two campaigns and avoid carrying assumptions about controls or systems from the newer game into the older one.
- Launch Red Dead Redemption. Begin its main campaign as John Marston and follow it through its conclusion.
- Decide whether you want optional fiction. Start Undead Nightmare only after the standard Red Dead Redemption story, and treat Red Dead Revolver as unrelated.
This plan keeps the narrative order intact while leaving optional exploration and completion goals flexible. You can return to either game for side content without changing the sequence of the main campaigns.
Platform and edition notes for current players
PlayStation availability
The current PlayStation listing covers Red Dead Redemption for PS4 and PS5. The page also documents a bundle containing Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare, Red Dead Online and Red Dead Redemption 2 Story Mode. A bundle’s contents do not change the order: install or launch the story campaigns in the sequence above.

Verify your regional storefront
Prices, catalogue inclusion, editions and regional availability can change. Check the storefront for your country immediately before buying or downloading, and read the product description to confirm whether it includes the story mode you need. A listing that includes online access is not a substitute for the single-player campaign.
Physical and digital copies
Physical ownership, digital purchase and catalogue access all support the same narrative plan. The important distinction is which campaign is installed and whether the required story content is included, not the purchase format. If a bundle presents the games in release order on its menu, use the chronology in this guide instead of following the menu sequence.

You are completely new to the series
Use the recommended chronology: Red Dead Redemption 2, its epilogue, then Red Dead Redemption. This gives you the clearest progression from the 1899 gang story to John Marston’s 1911 mission.
You played Red Dead Redemption years ago
Play Red Dead Redemption 2 next and complete its epilogue. You already know the 1911 endpoint, so the newer game can function as historical context and a deeper look at the earlier period. Afterward, replaying the original campaign is optional rather than required.
You care about release history
Release order is Red Dead Redemption (2010) followed by Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018). Choose it when your goal is to experience the franchise as its original audience did. It is a different lens, not a correction to the chronological recommendation.

Common ordering mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: starting with the 2010 release because it came first
Release order and story order are different. The 2010 game is first historically as a product, but its events take place in 1911, after the 1899 events of Red Dead Redemption 2. Use release order only if that perspective is your deliberate preference.
Mistake: stopping before the epilogue
The epilogue completes the first game’s narrative handoff. If you move to Red Dead Redemption immediately after the main story, return and finish the epilogue first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Mistake: treating Undead Nightmare as required canon
The zombie campaign is optional alternate fiction. It adds a different genre experience but is not needed to follow the main two-game arc.
Mistake: assuming Red Dead Revolver must come first
Red Dead Revolver is separate. Its position does not affect the Redemption chronology, so do not delay the two connected games to fit it in.
Mistake: buying a bundle without checking its contents
Storefront bundles and regional catalogues change. Confirm that the package includes the story modes, then arrange your launches chronologically yourself. The presence of Red Dead Online does not replace either single-player campaign.
The simple decision
If you want one unambiguous answer, play Red Dead Redemption 2 from its opening through the epilogue, then play Red Dead Redemption. Add Undead Nightmare afterward only for its optional horror campaign, and regard Red Dead Revolver as a separate western. That route follows the 1899-to-1911 timeline while preserving the intended transition into John Marston’s story.
