The official Storage Expansion Card is the straightforward way to add fast capacity to either Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. Insert the card into the dedicated expansion port on the back of the console, and Xbox recognizes it without a setup procedure. Unlike USB storage, the card is designed to match the internal SSD’s performance, so games optimized for Series X|S can run directly from it.
What the official Xbox expansion card does
Xbox Series X and Series S have a dedicated Storage Expansion port on the rear panel. The official accessory for that port is the Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S. It adds a second high-speed storage area that the console treats as available game storage.
Microsoft and Xbox Wire describe the card as plug-and-play: connect it to the rear port and use it like other storage on the console. You can choose it as an install location and move or copy games between the internal drive and the card. No separate software installation or configuration sequence is required according to Microsoft’s published instructions.
The important distinction is performance. The card is intended to preserve the sustained speed required by Series X|S-optimized games. Those games can be played directly from the card, rather than being moved back to the internal SSD each time you want to launch them.

Which consoles and games are compatible?
Xbox Series X
Series X accepts the official card through its rear Storage Expansion port. It can hold installed games and run Series X|S-optimized titles directly from the card.
Xbox Series S
Series S uses the same expansion-card approach. The official card is therefore the matching upgrade when the console’s internal capacity is not enough for a growing library.
Backward-compatible games
Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games can be stored on either the official expansion card or USB 3.1 HDD/SSD storage. A USB drive is sufficient when your goal is to keep those games available without using internal space.

Microsoft’s storage comparison says USB storage cannot play games optimized for Series X|S directly. Those titles must be on the internal SSD or the official expansion card when you want to launch them from external capacity. USB can still be used as a holding area for such games, after which you move them back to eligible high-speed storage.
What to buy
Look for the product named Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S, with the Xbox Series X|S compatibility wording shown in the listing. Do not substitute a generic PC NVMe drive, a USB SSD or a USB hard disk: those products use different interfaces and do not provide the same direct-play support for Series X|S-optimized games.

Microsoft’s cited accessory page lists 1 TB and 2 TB selections in the referenced regional listing. The United States page also exposes a 4 TB selection. Because capacity options, stock and retailer listings differ by market, check the live product page for your region before ordering.
If you are searching a retailer, use the exact phrase Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S 1TB (or replace 1TB with the capacity you need). Confirm that the result identifies an Xbox Series X|S expansion card rather than a similarly named PC SSD or USB drive.

Choosing the right capacity
1 TB
The 1 TB model is the smallest listed option and suits a library in which you rotate games regularly. It adds a substantial amount of space while keeping the purchase smaller than higher-capacity versions. The exact usable space shown by the console will be lower than the number printed on the box because storage capacity is represented differently by manufacturers and the system reserves some space.
2 TB
The 2 TB selection provides twice the stated capacity of the 1 TB card. It is the practical middle choice when several large Series X|S titles need to remain installed at once and you want fewer moves between storage locations.
4 TB
The cited US accessory page exposes a 4 TB selection. Availability is market-dependent, so do not assume that this capacity is offered in every country or by every retailer.

A simple capacity decision
- Choose 1 TB if you mainly need additional room for a rotating set of current games.
- Choose 2 TB if you want a larger always-installed library and fewer transfers.
- Consider 4 TB only where the option is officially listed and the local price fits your budget.
Prices are not fixed globally. They vary by country, retailer, promotions and inventory, so compare the live listings available in your market rather than relying on a quoted price from another region or date.
How to install the card
- Locate the port. Turn the console around and find the dedicated Storage Expansion port on the back of the Xbox Series X or Series S.
- Decide whether to power down. Microsoft’s instructions describe direct insertion; the card is designed to be inserted while the console is shut down or while it is on.
- Insert the card. Align the connector with the port and push the card fully in until it is seated. Do not force it at an angle.
- Wait for recognition. The console should recognize the card as available storage without a separate setup process.
- Set an install location if desired. In the console’s storage-management controls, select the card when choosing where new games are installed.
- Move or copy existing games. Use the storage controls to transfer games between the internal drive and the expansion card.
The card is removable, but treat the connector and port as precision hardware. If you remove it, finish any active transfer first and avoid pulling at an angle.
How games run from the card
Series X|S-optimized games can be launched directly from the official card. Microsoft says the experience is designed to match the internal SSD’s performance, which is why the card is the appropriate expansion for games that depend on the newer consoles’ high-speed storage.
Backward-compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles also run from the card. In practical terms, one card can hold both generations of games while retaining direct play for Series X|S-optimized releases.
Expansion card versus USB 3.1 storage
| Use case | Official expansion card | USB 3.1 HDD or SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Store Xbox games | Yes | Yes |
| Play Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games | Yes | Yes |
| Play Series X|S-optimized games directly | Yes | No, according to Microsoft’s comparison |
| Match internal SSD performance | Yes, by design | No |
When the expansion card is the better choice
- You want to launch Series X|S-optimized games without moving them to the internal drive.
- You want a plug-and-play installation with no separate enclosure or cable.
- You want the storage path Microsoft designed to match internal SSD performance.
- You want one add-on that handles current-generation and backward-compatible games.
When USB storage is enough
- You mainly need inexpensive archive space.
- Your external library consists mostly of Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox games.
- You are comfortable moving Series X|S-optimized games to the internal drive or expansion card before playing them.
A USB HDD or SSD can therefore complement the official card. It is not an equivalent replacement when direct play of Series X|S-optimized games is a requirement.

Why the performance difference matters
In a 2020 Xbox Wire technical primer, Microsoft described the custom internal SSD as providing 2.4 GB/s of raw input/output throughput. The same primer stated that this is more than 40 times the throughput of Xbox One. These are Microsoft-published specifications, not independent benchmark results.
Series X|S game optimization is built around the newer storage architecture. The official card is intended to provide the sustained performance profile needed by those games, whereas USB storage is positioned for storage and backward-compatible play. That distinction explains why capacity alone does not determine whether a drive can run a title directly.
How to set up a practical storage plan
For a mostly current-generation library
- Install the official card and make it the preferred location for new Series X|S-optimized games if you want to preserve internal space.
- Keep the games you play most often on the internal SSD or the card so they can launch directly.
- Use USB storage, if available, as an archive for titles you are not currently playing.
For a mixed-generation library
- Place frequently played Series X|S-optimized games on the internal SSD or expansion card.
- Store Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games on whichever storage device offers the capacity you need.
- When installing a new title, check its generation and optimization status before choosing the destination.
For limited budgets
- Start with USB 3.1 storage if your immediate need is inexpensive space for backward-compatible games or an archive.
- Add the official card when you need to keep Series X|S-optimized games playable without transfers.
- Compare current local prices and capacities; Microsoft does not publish one universal worldwide price in the cited material.
Troubleshooting an expansion card
The console does not recognize the card
- Power the console down, remove the card, and reinsert it straight into the dedicated rear expansion port.
- Check that the card is fully seated and that you purchased the Xbox Series X|S expansion-card model, not a generic SSD or USB product.
- Restart the console and check its storage controls again.
If the card remains unrecognized after those checks, consult the current Xbox support guidance for the console and accessory in your region. The published installation procedure itself does not require a separate formatting or driver step.
A Series X|S-optimized game will not launch from USB
This is expected under Microsoft’s comparison: USB storage cannot directly play games optimized for Series X|S. Move the game to the internal SSD or the official expansion card, then launch it from that eligible storage.

Review both the internal drive and the expansion card in the console’s storage-management controls. Move less frequently played titles to USB archive storage, or remove games you no longer need locally. Keep in mind that copying a game to USB does not make a Series X|S-optimized title directly playable from that USB drive.

A listing looks like the right product but has unclear compatibility
Verify the full product name and the explicit “for Xbox Series X|S” wording. If the listing only describes a PC SSD, portable SSD or USB hard drive, it is not the official expansion card described here.
Portability and using a card with another Xbox
The card uses the same dedicated expansion-card design on Xbox Series X and Series S, so both console models accept the official accessory. The published material establishes the shared port and compatibility; it does not establish separate licensing behavior, account transfer rules or every scenario involving moving a card between consoles. For a second console, check the current Xbox guidance and the game’s ownership requirements rather than assuming that storage transfer alone grants access.
Buying checklist
- Correct product: Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S.
- Correct interface: dedicated Storage Expansion connector, not USB.
- Capacity: 1 TB and 2 TB are listed on the cited regional Microsoft page; 4 TB is exposed on the cited US page.
- Market check: confirm local availability and current price before ordering.
- Use case: choose the card if direct play of Series X|S-optimized games matters; choose USB when archive space or backward-compatible play is the priority.
- Listing verification: make sure the seller’s description explicitly identifies Xbox Series X|S compatibility.
What Microsoft’s published claims do—and do not—establish
Microsoft’s materials establish the card’s plug-and-play installation, compatibility with both Series X and Series S, and support for direct play of Series X|S-optimized games. They also publish the internal SSD figures of 2.4 GB/s raw throughput and more than 40 times Xbox One’s throughput in the 2020 Xbox Wire primer.

No independent benchmark testing is represented here. Treat performance statements as Microsoft’s specifications and comparison claims. Likewise, price, stock, regional capacity choices and retailer terms change over time and should be checked in the market where you intend to buy.
Bottom line: which storage should you choose?
Buy the official Storage Expansion Card when you need more space for Series X|S-optimized games and want to play those games directly without moving them back to the internal SSD. Installation is simply a matter of inserting the card into the rear expansion port, and Microsoft positions its performance as equivalent to the internal SSD for this purpose.
Choose USB 3.1 HDD or SSD storage when your priority is lower-cost capacity for an archive or for Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. USB is useful, but Microsoft’s comparison does not treat it as a direct-play solution for Series X|S-optimized titles.
