Evaluate the five-player lineup, not just the new player’s stats: compare a defined pre-change baseline with repeated post-change results, then interpret those results alongside gameplay measures and the strength and mix of the competition. Keep early adaptation separate from sustained performance. The evidence supports this method, but it does not establish a universal CS2 waiting period or prove that a roster move caused a change in results.
Define exactly which roster you are evaluating
Write down the change date and the five players before and after it. Valve defines a roster for its tournament requirements as “a collection of five specific Athletes,” regardless of their association with an organization. That makes the lineup—not the club name—the appropriate unit for an official roster comparison. See Valve’s tournament-operation requirements.
If the organization kept its name but changed a player, describe the subject as the new lineup. If several players, a coach, or roles also changed, record those changes too: they complicate any claim that one substitution explains the outcome.
Set a baseline and record the size of the sample
Choose a pre-change period and a follow-up period before drawing conclusions. Record the dates and the number of matches, maps, and rounds in each. There is no established universal minimum sample size or number of weeks for evaluating a CS2 roster change, so disclose the sample rather than presenting a small run as definitive.

- Keep the data provider and metric definitions consistent across both periods.
- Note competition level, opponent strength, map and side mix, and match format.
- Record gaps in play and known role, coaching, or other roster changes.
- Separate the first post-change results from a later follow-up period.
Start with team outcomes, then use player stats to explain them
Map and match results, plus tournament progression or finishes, show whether the lineup is converting its play into competitive outcomes. Individual statistics can help explain how it is performing, but a player rating is not a team result.
Valve describes its Valve Regional Standings (VRS) as the official system for ranking roster performance and as the basis for direct VRS invitations. VRS movement can provide competitive context, but a ranking change alone cannot isolate the effect of a single substitution. HLTV’s explanation of the live Valve-ranking model describes estimates using the last 18 months of maps and round scores; that is one model’s context, not a causal test of a move. Choose complementary gameplay measures
Use a small group of measures that illuminate different parts of performance. None should be treated as a stand-alone verdict, because roles, opportunities, opponents, maps, sides, and rounds played affect what the numbers mean.

Where suitable data is available, action-value analysis can add context beyond counts. One research framework estimated round win probability at successive game states and valued actions by how they changed that probability, aggregating the result as win probability added per round. The authors analyzed more than 70 million in-game CS:GO events; the method is a way to interpret action value, not a guarantee that a lineup change caused a result. See the action-valuation paper.
Distinguish adaptation from sustained performance
Do not collapse every match after a move into one number if the sample allows a meaningful early-versus-later view. A 2022 case study of professional CS:GO tournaments reported that both individual and collective performance “dropped initially, and then slowly recovered” after players switched teams. The authors also reported an inverse correlation between player performance and the number of teams a player had joined. These are findings from CS:GO tournament data, not a CS2-specific rule, a guaranteed trajectory, or a prescribed waiting period. See the 2022 team-switching study.

Make the comparison fair—and state what it can establish
Raw win rates can mislead when the two periods differ in opponent quality, map pool, sides, format, event level, or sample size. Team strength changes over time, and ranking models also use a window of results rather than a simple before-and-after test. Compare like with like where possible, and show the underlying sample and context.
When evaluating several moves, apply the same dimensions and definitions to each: team outcomes; role-sensitive measures; opponent and event strength; map and side mix; maps and rounds observed; and time since the change. Avoid ranking moves by one rating or short-term win percentage.

Phrase the conclusion to match the evidence. For example: “The lineup’s results improved over the observed period, with stronger trade rates across the sampled maps; the opponent and map mix also changed.” That is more defensible than saying the move caused improvement unless the analysis can separate the substitution from schedule, form, roles, coaching, and other changes.
