The most reliable way to evaluate a telecom-equipment stock is to connect three evidence streams from its filings: the quality and conversion schedule of its order backlog, normalized profitability after reconciling EBITDA with operating earnings, and gross debt relative to cash, free cash flow and upcoming obligations. A large backlog is not guaranteed revenue, a high EBITDA margin may include adjustments, and net cash does not eliminate execution risk. Read all three together, then test the result against segment mix, customer concentration, currency and valuation.

Start with a filing-based three-part screen

Use the latest annual report, quarterly release, investor presentation, debt note and non-GAAP reconciliation for each issuer. Record the reporting date and the definition used for every number. Telecom vendors often report several versions of the same measure: order backlog may exclude some service work, EBITDA may be reported or adjusted, and debt may be shown before or after leases and other obligations.

  1. Backlog quality and conversion: measure the backlog, its year-over-year change, the portion expected to be recognized within 12 months, order intake or book-to-bill when disclosed, customer concentration, cancellation rights and expected margin.
  2. Normalized operating performance: calculate EBITDA margin, reconcile it to EBIT or operating margin, and separate recurring results from restructuring, acquisitions, divestitures and other unusual items.
  3. Balance-sheet resilience: start with interest-bearing liabilities and cash, then examine net debt or net cash, free-cash-flow coverage, maturities, interest expense, leases, pensions, provisions and liquidity headroom.

Only after these checks should you compare valuation. The central question is not which company has the biggest order book or highest margin, but whether contracted work can be delivered at sustainable margins without stressing the balance sheet.

How to analyze an equipment maker’s order backlog

What the backlog number means

Backlog is the value of orders that management expects to deliver in the future under its stated accounting and commercial definition. It is a forward indicator, not a guarantee of revenue. The reported amount can change because of new orders, shipment and revenue recognition, cancellations, scope changes, foreign-exchange movements and reclassification between product and service activities.

Begin by placing the current balance beside at least one prior period and, where available, order intake or book-to-bill. A falling backlog can still be healthy if deliveries are accelerating or low-margin work is being removed. A rising backlog can be poor quality if it is concentrated in one customer, carries weak margins or has flexible cancellation terms.

Use the recognition schedule, not just the total

The share scheduled for the next 12 months is the first conversion test. A multi-year backlog with no timing disclosure is less useful than a smaller backlog with a credible delivery schedule. Calculate:

  • Backlog change: current backlog minus prior backlog, divided by prior backlog.
  • Near-term conversion: backlog expected within one year, divided by total backlog.
  • Residual duration: the portions expected in years two and three and after year three.
  • Book-to-bill: order intake divided by revenue, only when both figures use compatible periods and definitions.

For Nokia, the 2025 Form 20-F reports an order backlog of EUR 19.5 billion at 31 December 2025, compared with EUR 20.0 billion at 31 December 2024. That is a 2.5% year-over-year decline. Management estimated that 57% would be recognized within one year, 28% in two to three years and 15% after three years.

Nokia backlog measure Reported value How to use it
Backlog at 31 December 2025 EUR 19.5 billion Starting point for conversion and trend analysis
Backlog at 31 December 2024 EUR 20.0 billion Prior-year comparison; the balance decreased by about 2.5%
Expected recognition within one year 57% Near-term visibility; multiply by the stated backlog only as an analytical estimate, not booked revenue
Expected recognition in two to three years 28% Medium-term demand exposure
Expected recognition after three years 15% Long-duration exposure with greater timing and cancellation uncertainty

The percentages describe management’s expected timing, not an irrevocable customer commitment. Check whether the filing discusses customer credit, termination clauses, milestone payments, supply constraints or foreign-exchange effects that could delay or reduce conversion.

Test backlog quality along five dimensions

Dimension Questions to answer in the filing Why it matters
Customer concentration What percentage comes from the largest customers, operators or government buyers? A single delayed deployment can affect a disproportionate share of sales.
Segment mix Is the backlog in mobile networks, optical and IP, enterprise, software or services? Different segments have different margins, replacement cycles and working-capital needs.
Contract terms Can customers cancel, defer or reduce orders? Are there milestone or acceptance conditions? Headline backlog may overstate economically firm demand.
Geography and currency Which currencies and regions are represented, and are prices fixed or indexed? Currency moves and local investment cycles can change revenue and margin.
Expected profitability Does management disclose backlog margin, mix or loss-making contracts? Revenue growth destroys value if delivery costs exceed the contracted price.

Look for conversion warning signs

  • Backlog rises while revenue and operating cash flow do not, suggesting slower execution or working-capital absorption.
  • The near-term share falls while the total remains stable, indicating that deliveries may be moving into later years.
  • Order intake is strong but comes from a low-margin segment or a small number of customers.
  • Management repeatedly revises timing, cites customer acceptance delays or increases contract-loss provisions.
  • Foreign-exchange translation accounts for a material part of the change.

Read backlog together with quarterly revenue recognition and cash collections. A contract is investable evidence only when the company can deliver it at an acceptable margin and collect the resulting receivable.

How to evaluate EBITDA margin without being misled

Calculate the basic ratio, then reconcile it

EBITDA margin is EBITDA divided by revenue for the same period. It removes interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, which makes it useful for comparing operating performance, but it is not cash flow and it does not capture capital expenditure or working-capital needs.

For every issuer, put reported EBITDA, adjusted EBITDA, EBIT or operating margin and gross margin in one table. Read the reconciliation line by line. Common adjustments include restructuring, impairment, acquisition and divestiture costs, litigation, share-based compensation and gains or losses on asset sales. An adjustment can be economically recurring even if management labels it exceptional.

Ericsson’s 2025 figures illustrate the distinction

Ericsson measure 2025 2024 Interpretation
EBITDA SEK 40.5 billion SEK 22.1 billion Reported EBITDA increased by SEK 18.4 billion
Reported EBITDA margin 17.1% 8.9% Improved by 8.2 percentage points on the reported definition
Adjusted EBITDA margin 18.1% Not stated in the cited 2025 figures One percentage point above reported margin in 2025; inspect the reconciliation before treating it as recurring
Net sales SEK 236.7 billion Not stated in the cited 2025 figures Denominator for the 2025 margin
Gross margin 47.6% Not stated in the cited 2025 figures Shows product and service profitability before operating costs
Adjusted EBIT margin 17.3% Not stated in the cited 2025 figures Closer to operating profit after depreciation; definition must be checked

The cited Ericsson annual-report statement says EBITDA increased to SEK 40.5 billion from SEK 22.1 billion, with an EBITDA margin of 17.1% versus 8.9%. The 18.1% adjusted margin is a different measure, so it should not be used as a direct substitute for the reported figure.

Normalize for a useful trend

  1. Start with reported revenue and EBITDA from the income statement.
  2. Recalculate the margin yourself to catch denominator differences.
  3. List every adjustment and classify it as genuinely non-recurring, recurring in practice or uncertain.
  4. Compare the resulting normalized margin with EBIT or operating margin. A widening gap can indicate high depreciation, acquisition amortization or aggressive adjustments.
  5. Check gross margin and segment margins. Company-wide improvement may come from mix rather than better economics in the core network business.
  6. Compare only like-for-like definitions across peers. If one company excludes stock compensation or restructuring and another does not, present both reported figures and a clearly labeled normalized view.

Margin direction is often more informative than a single level. Sustained improvement accompanied by stable or rising gross margin, cash generation and backlog quality is stronger evidence than a one-quarter spike caused by a cost program or unusually favorable mix.

How much debt is too much for a telecom vendor?

Separate gross debt, net debt and net cash

Start with interest-bearing liabilities, not a headline leverage ratio. Then identify cash and cash equivalents plus interest-bearing financial investments. Gross debt shows the contractual claims that must be serviced; net debt subtracts liquid resources. Negative net debt means net cash, but it does not make a company risk-free.

Balance-sheet item What to collect Analytical use
Interest-bearing liabilities Current and non-current borrowings, with currency and maturity Gross debt and refinancing exposure
Cash and investments Unrestricted cash, short-term investments and trapped or restricted amounts Resources available to repay or support operations
Net debt or net cash Debt minus qualifying cash and investments First-pass leverage measure; verify the issuer’s definition
Lease liabilities Current and long-term leases Fixed payment obligations often omitted from simple debt ratios
Pensions and provisions Funded status, restructuring provisions, guarantees and contingent obligations Claims that can compete with lenders and shareholders for cash
Free cash flow Cash from operations less capital expenditure, with the issuer’s definition Tests whether debt service and investment are funded internally

Apply coverage and maturity tests

  • Net debt/EBITDA: use the same period and a normalized EBITDA; a low ratio based on a temporary peak can understate risk.
  • Gross debt/EBITDA: shows obligations before assuming cash is fully available.
  • Interest coverage: compare EBIT or EBITDA with cash interest expense, then stress the result for lower margins.
  • Free-cash-flow coverage: compare recurring free cash flow with interest, scheduled principal repayments, leases and minimum capital expenditure.
  • Liquidity headroom: map cash, committed undrawn facilities and debt maturities by year; do not count restricted cash as freely deployable.

For Nokia, 2025 consolidated financial information reports interest-bearing liabilities of EUR 3.413 billion, net cash and interest-bearing financial investments of EUR 3.378 billion, and gearing of negative 16.0%. The negative gearing indicates a net-cash position under Nokia’s definition. Subtracting the reported investment-and-cash figure from interest-bearing liabilities leaves an approximate EUR 35 million difference, but that arithmetic is not a replacement for the company’s reconciliation: definitions, restricted balances and other adjustments can differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Debt risk can still rise in a net-cash company if cash is held in currencies that do not match obligations, working capital absorbs funds, customer failures delay collections, or management uses cash for acquisitions and buybacks. Review maturities and commitments even when net debt is negative.

Combine the three metrics in one decision framework

A practical scorecard prevents one attractive metric from dominating the analysis. Mark each category green, amber or red using the issuer’s own disclosures, and write the evidence beside the mark.

Category Green evidence Amber evidence Red evidence
Backlog conversion Stable or growing backlog, high near-term recognition, diversified customers and credible delivery Flat backlog, limited timing disclosure or concentration that requires monitoring Falling near-term conversion, cancellations, repeated delays or weak contract economics
Margin quality Reported and adjusted margins both improve, gross margin is stable and cash follows earnings Improvement depends on adjustments or mix; reconciliation is incomplete Reported margin falls, adjustments recur or EBITDA does not convert to cash
Balance sheet Net cash or moderate leverage, long maturities and strong free-cash-flow coverage Refinancing needs, lease or pension obligations, or volatile cash generation High gross debt, near-term maturities, weak liquidity or covenant pressure

Do not average the colors mechanically. A red balance-sheet result can outweigh a green backlog because a liquidity event destroys equity value before long-term demand recovers. Conversely, a temporary margin dip may be tolerable when backlog quality, cash and customer diversification are strong.

Adjust for segment mix, customers and currencies

Telecom equipment companies are portfolios of businesses rather than single products. Separate mobile networks, optical and IP equipment, enterprise systems, software and managed services where the filing allows it. Hardware may have different depreciation and working-capital profiles from recurring software or services. A company-wide EBITDA margin can improve simply because a higher-margin segment grew faster.

Map the largest customers and operators by geography. Concentration increases bargaining power for the buyer and can create a sharp revenue gap when a deployment is postponed. Government or large-carrier contracts may be financially strong but subject to budget cycles, acceptance milestones or political restrictions.

Record the reporting currency, major transaction currencies and hedging policy. Compare margins in percentage points rather than converting one company’s income statement into another currency and implying greater precision than the disclosures support. Currency translation can move backlog and revenue even when local-currency demand is unchanged.

Value the stock using normalized earnings and downside cases

Once the operating screen is complete, value the equity on earnings that can survive a normal cycle. Use reported and normalized EBITDA, EBIT and free cash flow as separate cases. Do not capitalize an exceptional margin or assume every backlog euro becomes revenue at the current margin.

Build three operating cases

  • Base case: apply the disclosed recognition schedule, a normalized segment mix and a margin supported by recurring performance.
  • Delay case: move part of the next-12-month backlog into later periods and test working-capital pressure from slower customer acceptance.
  • Compression case: reduce gross and EBITDA margins for pricing pressure, input costs, unfavorable mix or execution problems while keeping fixed costs in place.

For each case, estimate revenue, EBITDA, EBIT, free cash flow and net debt. Then compare enterprise value with normalized EBITDA or EBIT and equity value with free cash flow. State which assumptions are reported and which are your scenario inputs. A valuation that works only if backlog converts on time and the highest adjusted margin persists has little downside protection.

Worked reading of the Nokia and Ericsson figures

The available 2025 figures show why the screen must remain multidimensional rather than becoming a league table.

Metric Nokia Ericsson What can and cannot be concluded
Backlog EUR 19.5 billion at 31 December 2025 versus EUR 20.0 billion a year earlier; 57% expected within one year Not stated in the cited figures Nokia provides a conversion datapoint; no backlog comparison is established for Ericsson here
Operating or EBIT margin Operating margin 4.4% Adjusted EBIT margin 17.3% Definitions differ, so the percentages are not a like-for-like ranking
EBITDA margin Not stated in the cited figures Reported 17.1%; adjusted 18.1% An Ericsson EBITDA comparison cannot be made from the stated Nokia data
Debt and cash Interest-bearing liabilities EUR 3.413 billion; net cash and interest-bearing financial investments EUR 3.378 billion; gearing -16.0% Not stated in the cited figures Nokia’s reported gearing indicates net cash; Ericsson’s leverage cannot be inferred here
Scale and gross economics Not stated in the cited figures Net sales SEK 236.7 billion; gross margin 47.6% Different disclosures prevent a complete peer ranking

The correct conclusion is conditional: Nokia offers disclosed backlog timing and a net-cash balance-sheet indicator, while Ericsson’s cited figures show a sharp 2025 EBITDA and margin improvement. Neither set of figures alone establishes which stock is superior. You would need the same-period backlog, debt, cash-flow, segment and valuation data for both issuers, using reconciled definitions.

Refresh the screen every reporting period

Backlog, margins, debt and accounting definitions can change materially between annual reports. Maintain a worksheet with one row per quarter and separate columns for reported, adjusted and comparable measures.

  1. Download the latest annual report and quarterly release from the issuer.
  2. Update backlog, order intake, recognition timing, revenue and segment mix.
  3. Recalculate reported EBITDA margin and archive the non-GAAP reconciliation.
  4. Update gross debt, cash, investments, leases, maturities, interest expense and free cash flow.
  5. Read management commentary for cancellations, customer acceptance, supply constraints, restructuring and currency effects.
  6. Re-run base, delay and margin-compression cases and record what changed from the prior quarter.

Common analytical mistakes

  • Treating backlog as guaranteed sales: inspect timing, cancellation rights, customer credit and expected gross margin.
  • Comparing EBITDA margins blindly: reconcile definitions, adjustments, depreciation and segment mix first.
  • Using net debt alone: include gross maturities, leases, pensions, provisions, interest and free-cash-flow coverage.
  • Mixing currencies or periods: keep each issuer in its reporting currency and align fiscal periods before comparing.
  • Ignoring cash conversion: EBITDA can rise while receivables, inventory or contract assets consume cash.
  • Assuming a net-cash company has no risk: execution, working capital, foreign exchange and capital-allocation decisions still affect equity value.
  • Letting a single quarter set the valuation: use a normalized cycle and stress delayed backlog and lower margins.

The resulting analysis is a disciplined chain: establish what is ordered, test when and at what margin it can be delivered, verify that profits become cash, and determine whether debt and valuation leave room for setbacks. That chain is more informative than any isolated backlog, EBITDA or leverage headline.
