Evaluate Hindustan Zinc’s dividend in two linked steps: calculate a dated yield using a clearly defined dividend and share price, then test whether that cash return survives weaker zinc, lead and silver prices. The FY2026 disclosures report ₹10 per share, but no permanently current market denominator; a current yield therefore requires a share price recorded on a stated date. The company’s FY2025 payout was ₹29 per share, so one high-yield observation should not be treated as a normal or guaranteed payout.
What Hindustan Zinc’s dividend yield actually measures
Dividend yield is a dated ratio, not a permanent characteristic of a stock:
Dividend yield (%) = annualized dividend per share ÷ share price on the same date × 100
The numerator must be identified precisely. It can be the latest completed financial-year dividend, a trailing-twelve-month total, or an interim dividend annualized for illustration. Those choices produce different results. The denominator also needs a date and a convention: an investor may use the closing price on the declaration date, the ex-dividend date, the record date, or the price observed when making the calculation. State the convention rather than presenting an undated percentage.

For example, the FY2026 figure of ₹10 per share is a full-year dividend reported by Hindustan Zinc. Dividing it by a share price observed months later would mix two dates and could make the yield look higher or lower solely because the share price moved. A forward yield would instead use an estimate of the next year’s dividend; it is an assumption, not a disclosed fact.
The FY2025 annual report also mentions a 5.6% dividend yield. Treat that as the company’s reported figure under its own reporting convention. The available disclosure does not establish the exact market-price date and ex-date convention behind that percentage, so it should not be combined mechanically with a later price or compared with a newly calculated yield without matching definitions.
The disclosed payout history shows why the numerator matters

The per-share payout fell by about 65.5% from FY2025 to FY2026. That change is large enough to invalidate a simple practice such as taking the highest recent dividend and multiplying it by four as a “normal” annual payment. It also means that a yield screen can be misleading when it uses a special, unusually large, or otherwise non-recurring distribution.

The latest audited annual period ended March 31, 2026, and the related exchange filing records approval on April 24, 2026. Before publishing or acting on a current yield, check the latest quarterly release listed in Hindustan Zinc’s investor materials, then record the market price, currency, date, and dividend convention used.
Four tests for dividend sustainability
1. Cash coverage after the right capital-spending adjustments
Compare the cash actually available for distribution with the dividend, not just accounting profit. Hindustan Zinc reported FY2026 free cash flow of ₹13,337 crore before growth capex and renewable-power investment, alongside a reported dividend distribution of ₹4,225 crore.

On that company-defined basis, the dividend was covered by roughly 3.2 times free cash flow. The qualification is essential: maintenance capital expenditure, working-capital movements, taxes, financing flows, and the excluded growth and renewable investments can all reduce cash available for dividends. Recalculate coverage with a consistent definition each year.
2. Cycle coverage under adverse metal prices
Model lower realized prices for zinc, lead and silver, weaker production or recovery, higher energy and labor costs, and an unfavorable rupee-dollar exchange rate. Then flow those assumptions through EBITDA, taxes, free cash flow and net cash. A payout that works at FY2026 margins may not work at the bottom of a metals cycle.

Hindustan Zinc ended FY2026 with ₹5,594 crore of net cash, which provides a cushion against a downturn. However, the company approved phase-one projects of approximately ₹17,000 crore to double refined-metal capacity to 2.0 million tonnes per annum and to develop critical-mineral capacity. A strong current balance sheet does not make the dividend permanently secure when major projects require funding. Assess whether those projects will be funded from operating cash, existing liquidity, new borrowing, asset sales or a lower payout.
4. Payout consistency
Separate regular dividends from interim, special or unusually high payments. Compare at least several years of per-share distributions and total cash paid. The FY2025-to-FY2026 change is a clear warning against annualizing an exceptional year or treating a single yield screen as a long-run income forecast. No disclosed long-run dividend target or guaranteed payout figure is established in the cited company materials.
Why a zinc-only analysis misses important risk
Hindustan Zinc is an integrated producer of zinc, lead and silver. Each metal has a different price cycle, volume profile and contribution to earnings. Analyze them separately before forming a company-level view.

Zinc: the core base-metal exposure
Zinc prices affect concentrate and refined-metal revenue, but the realized outcome depends on mined and refined volumes, ore grades, recoveries, treatment and refining charges, energy costs, royalties and currency. FY2026 zinc cost of production excluding royalty was reported at US$959 per tonne. That is a unit-cost reference, not a guaranteed margin: a lower realized zinc price or higher input cost can narrow the spread quickly.
Lead: a separate price and margin factor
Lead is an important additional metal rather than a footnote to zinc. Hindustan Zinc’s FY2026 KPI commentary specifically identified lower lead prices as an offset to margin improvement. A zinc-only sensitivity therefore overstates precision by ignoring a disclosed source of pressure on earnings.
Silver: a major earnings driver
Silver can materially change the company’s earnings mix. The FY2026 CFO statement attributes approximately 45% of net profit to silver, while the KPI material reports a silver portfolio of 627 tonnes. That makes silver price and silver volume assumptions necessary in any serious dividend analysis. Calling Hindustan Zinc only a zinc stock can obscure a large portion of the profit exposure.
How commodity prices reach the dividend
- Start with realized prices. Use the price Hindustan Zinc actually receives, not only a headline exchange or spot benchmark. Product premiums, treatment charges, payability and contract timing can create a gap.
- Check volumes and quality. Mined tonnes, refined tonnes, grades, recoveries and by-product output determine how much metal is sold at that price.
- Subtract operating costs. Energy, labor, consumables, mining costs, treatment and refining charges and logistics determine the margin per tonne or ounce.
- Apply currency effects. Revenue may be linked to US-dollar metal prices while substantial costs are in rupees. Rupee appreciation or depreciation changes the translated margin.
- Include government-linked costs. Royalties, taxes and other statutory charges can change the cash left after an apparently favorable price move.
- Apply hedging outcomes. Hedged tonnes or ounces can produce gains or losses relative to later spot prices and alter realized revenue.
- Carry the result through the accounts. The relevant chain is revenue, EBITDA, profit, operating cash flow, free cash flow and net cash—not price to dividend in one jump.
- Test capital allocation. Deduct maintenance investment and consider growth projects before deciding how much cash can safely be distributed.
FY2026 illustrates this interaction. The company reported revenue of ₹40,844 crore, EBITDA of ₹22,162 crore, net profit of ₹13,832 crore and an EBITDA margin of approximately 54%, up from 51% in FY2025. The KPI explanation links the improvement to better zinc and silver prices, favorable exchange rates and lower production cost, while identifying strategic-hedging losses, lower lead prices and lower silver volume as offsets. Those mixed effects are why a single zinc-price assumption is inadequate.
What Hindustan Zinc’s hedging changes
Hedging is designed to improve predictability, not to maximize revenue in every rising-price market. In FY2026, Hindustan Zinc reported hedges covering 71 kilotonnes of zinc at an average price of US$3,133 per tonne and 59 tonnes of silver at an average price of US$60 per troy ounce.

The company describes its policy this way: “As part of our risk management framework, we undertake strategic hedging for a portion of our annual production, within policy limits, to support greater predictability of revenues, EBITDA, and cash flows and to mitigate adverse price movements.”
That protection has a trade-off. If spot prices fall below a hedge price, the hedge can support realized revenue. If prices rise well above the hedge price, the company may surrender some upside; derivative accounting or economic settlement can also create a loss relative to the later market price. The FY2026 KPI page specifically lists strategic-hedging losses as an offset to margin improvement, so hedge results belong in both a downside and an upside scenario.
Build a commodity-and-dividend scenario grid
A useful model changes several variables at once rather than treating zinc as the only input.

Do not attach invented price targets to these cases. Use dated benchmark assumptions, document whether they are spot, forward or realized prices, and show the resulting EBITDA, free cash flow and net-cash path. The output that matters for an income investor is the dividend under stress, not merely the highest modeled earnings.

Is Hindustan Zinc a zinc stock or a silver stock?
It is neither a pure zinc proxy nor a pure silver proxy. Zinc remains the core base-metal exposure, but the disclosed approximately 45% silver contribution to FY2026 net profit and the 627-tonne silver portfolio make silver a major earnings driver. Lead adds another price exposure, and the combined result depends on volumes, costs, currency and hedges.

For portfolio construction, use separate zinc, lead and silver assumptions. A silver rally can support profit even when zinc is flat, while a silver-volume decline or hedge loss can offset favorable zinc pricing. The company-level dividend is therefore a function of the whole metal basket and capital-allocation choices.
How to calculate a current trailing or forward yield
- Choose the numerator. Select the latest completed full-year dividend, a trailing-twelve-month total, or a clearly labeled annualized interim amount.
- Confirm payment status. Distinguish declared, approved, ex-dividend and paid amounts; do not count a proposed distribution as cash already received.
- Capture the market price. Record the exchange or market-data source, currency, timestamp and whether it is a close, intraday price, ex-date price or record-date price.
- Apply the formula. Divide the per-share dividend by that same-date share price and multiply by 100.
- Label the result. Call it trailing, forward or annualized interim yield, and state the price date and dividend date next to the percentage.
- Run a sustainability check. Compare the result with cash coverage, the FY2025-to-FY2026 payout history, metal-price scenarios, hedging and planned investment.
For a forward yield, use a stated forecast and show the assumption. Do not present a forecast dividend as if Hindustan Zinc had announced it. For a trailing yield, include every qualifying distribution in the selected twelve-month window and avoid mixing a special payment with a regular run rate without saying so.
How to compare Hindustan Zinc with another metal producer

Comparing headline yields without these adjustments can rank the company with the falling share price, the exceptional dividend or the weakest future cash coverage as the apparent “winner.”
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using an undated price: write down the exact price date and convention.
- Annualizing FY2025’s ₹29 automatically: FY2026 was ₹10, so the older figure is not a demonstrated run rate.
- Repeating the FY2025 5.6% figure as current: it is a company-reported historical statistic whose denominator convention must be preserved.
- Calling the company a pure zinc play: silver contributed approximately 45% of FY2026 net profit and lead prices affected margins.
- Ignoring hedges: hedged quantities can cushion a fall and reduce participation in a rise; FY2026 included strategic-hedging losses.
- Treating reported free cash flow as fully distributable: the ₹13,337-crore figure excludes growth capex and renewable-power investment.
- Looking only at profit: dividends require cash after operating needs, taxes, maintenance investment and funding commitments.
- Overlooking growth projects: the approximately ₹17,000-crore phase-one program can compete with distributions even with ₹5,594 crore of net cash.
What to monitor in each quarterly update
- Realized zinc, lead and silver prices, with benchmark-to-realized differences.
- Mined and refined volumes, grades, recoveries and silver output.
- Unit production cost, especially energy and royalty effects.
- Rupee-dollar movement and its effect on revenue and costs.
- Hedge volumes, average prices, maturities and reported gains or losses.
- EBITDA margin compared with the FY2026 approximately 54% reference and the FY2025 51% level.
- Operating cash flow and free cash flow after maintenance spending.
- Net cash, borrowings and cash committed to the capacity-expansion program.
- Any dividend declaration, its ex-date and whether it is regular, interim or special.
Hindustan Zinc’s investor overview lists FY2027 quarterly materials. Use the latest release available at the time of analysis before describing the current yield, current commodity outlook or current financial position.
Limits of the available evidence
The official annual disclosures establish the FY2025 and FY2026 dividends and the FY2026 operating and financial figures above, but they do not supply a permanently current share price. A precise current yield must therefore be calculated from a dated exchange or clearly identified market-data quote. The materials also do not establish a guaranteed long-run dividend target or policy percentage. Any claim that the ₹10 or ₹29 payout will persist would go beyond the disclosed evidence.
Bottom-line assessment
Hindustan Zinc’s FY2026 dividend was ₹10 per share, supported on the company’s stated basis by ₹13,337 crore of free cash flow before specified growth investments and a ₹5,594-crore net-cash position. Those are meaningful resilience indicators, not proof of a fixed income stream. The FY2025 ₹29 payout, the approximately ₹17,000-crore expansion program, mixed zinc-lead-silver exposure, and hedging effects all argue for a cycle-tested, dated yield calculation rather than a headline percentage. The defensible conclusion is a conditional one: assess the dividend only after matching the price date and payout definition, then decide whether cash coverage remains adequate when metal prices, volumes, costs, currency and investment needs are less favorable.
