Before connecting a wallet to a crypto PayFi app, verify that you are on the genuine site, identify who operates the service and what it does, and understand what each wallet prompt would authorize. A connection commonly reveals your public wallet address and related activity; it does not by itself transfer funds. A later signature, token approval, or transaction can have very different consequences. If you cannot understand a prompt or verify the permission it requests, stop rather than sign.

Start with the site and the app’s identity

PayFi is not one product type, and the title does not identify a particular app. A service might be a wallet-connected dapp, payment provider, escrow interface, routing network, or a combination. Before connecting, establish which service you are using and which entities perform each function.

  1. Find the official destination. Navigate from a reliable official channel, inspect the domain carefully, and bookmark the genuine site for future visits. Look-alike pages can imitate real wallets and dapps. Never enter your recovery phrase into a website. See Ethereum.org’s scam guidance.
  2. Name the operator. Look for the legal entity behind the app, its role, the jurisdiction it operates in, and a way to contact support. Distinguish the app’s operator from any wallet, payment institution, fiat ramp, stablecoin issuer, or settlement provider it uses.
  3. Map the money path. Identify the token and network involved, where funds go, which contract or party receives an approval, and who handles settlement, redemption, disputes, or refunds. If the app’s explanation does not let you trace these steps, do not connect just to find out.

A verified domain or wallet trust signal can be useful information, but it is not a guarantee of safety. Conversely, a missing verification signal by itself does not prove a site is malicious. MetaMask describes wallet security alerts as informational signals; use them as one input alongside your own checks.

Understand what “PayFi” means for the specific app

Different services may use the PayFi label while doing different jobs. For example, Paycifi’s public materials describe USDC and EURC payments, programmable escrow, Base settlement, a non-custodial wallet using Circle MPC, third-party wallet, compliance and fiat-ramp providers, and publicly available smart-contract source. Those are company representations, not independent confirmation. Check the legal entity, deployed contract addresses, audit scope and date, actual key and fund controls, provider relationships, fees, dispute terms, and rules applicable where you live. Paycifi’s materials also describe its own regulatory analysis as not being a legal opinion. Paycifi’s site

PayF describes itself as a stablecoin-commerce routing network connecting issuers, wallets, card programs, payment institutions, software systems, and merchants. Its site says it does not custody funds, issue stablecoins, or operate payment licenses. Its issuer information sets out eligibility expectations including licensing, reserve attestations, operating policies, and sanctions and anti-money-laundering controls. These descriptions can help you identify diligence questions, but they do not independently establish the status of a particular integration or partner. PayF’s site and PayF’s issuer information.

For any app, translate its description into a simple map: which entity provides the interface, which entity controls keys or funds, which token and network are used, and which contract or counterparty receives the authorization. A label such as “non-custodial,” “licensed,” “audited,” or “compliant” is a claim to verify, not a substitute for that map.

Separate a wallet connection from a signature, approval, or transaction

A dapp connection commonly lets the site see the wallet’s public address and related activity and propose wallet prompts. It does not by itself give the site authority to transfer funds. You decide separately whether to sign a message, grant a token allowance, or submit a transaction. The wallet-permission guidance from Coinbase Help and Binance.US explains why these actions should not be treated as interchangeable.

  • Connection: exposes public wallet information to the site and allows it to request further actions.
  • Message signature: may authorize an action even if the wallet shows no network fee. “Sign” does not automatically mean harmless. If the wallet cannot render the message clearly or the app cannot explain why it is needed, do not sign. See Uniswap Labs’ guidance on wallet signature scams.
  • Token approval or allowance: authorizes a spender contract to use a token. An unlimited allowance can expose the entire balance of that token to the authorized spender.
  • Transaction: submits an action on-chain. Once accepted, a blockchain transaction generally cannot be reversed by the user, so review it before confirming.

Inspect every wallet prompt before approving it

Read the wallet’s prompt itself, not just the app’s button label or explanation. Check the action, chain, contract or spender address, token, amount or allowance, and any message being signed. Compare those details with what you intended to do in the app.

Trezor Safe 3 Crypto Hardware Wallet with Secure Element

  • User-Friendly Interface: Two-button pad device interface designed for straightforward and intuitive operation
  • Bright OLED Display: Clear and bright OLED screen enables easy and secure hands-on verification of transactions
  • On-Device Security Features: PIN and passphrase protection enabled directly on the device for enhanced security
  • Open-Source Transparency: Fully open-source design allows for transparent security verification and community auditing
  • Stop if the prompt is unreadable, unrelated to the action, or requests a different token, network, recipient, or permission than you expected.
  • Ask why an approval is necessary and whether the app offers a narrower amount or permission. Do not grant broad access simply because the interface recommends it.
  • Investigate wallet warnings before proceeding. The absence of a warning is not proof that a request is safe; MetaMask explains the limits of its security alerts at its security-alerts page.
  • If the request cannot be explained in plain language, decline it and seek clarification through a verified support channel.

Compare candidate apps using evidence, not badges

If you are choosing among multiple services, compare the same concrete questions for each one. Ask for documentation that matches the deployed app and contract you will actually use; a general security page or audit logo does not answer every question.

What to compare What to verify Why it matters
Custody, keys, and recovery Who can control keys or move funds, how recovery works, and what “non-custodial” means in the actual product. Provider terminology alone does not show who can act on assets or what happens if access is lost.
Operator and counterparties Legal entity, roles, jurisdictions, payment or ramp providers, issuers, and any relevant authorizations. The interface may not be the entity that holds, converts, settles, or redeems funds.
Assets and settlement path Supported stablecoins and networks, bridges if any, settlement parties, and redemption or settlement timing. A token or chain mismatch can change how a payment is processed and where funds end up.
Contracts and security history Exact contract addresses, independent audit scope and date, upgrade or administrator controls, and disclosed incidents. An audit claim is meaningful only when its scope and relation to the deployed contract are clear; it does not establish that a system is risk-free.
Wallet permissions Exact signature content, spender address, token, and approval amount requested for the intended task. These details determine what you are being asked to authorize, not the app’s general description.
Costs and recourse Fees, exchange spreads, redemption conditions, dispute process, support channel, and loss-handling terms. These terms affect the amount received and what options exist when a payment or settlement goes wrong.

Do not reduce the decision to a trust badge, claimed total value locked, audit logo, or “non-custodial” label. MetaMask’s dapp guide and security-alert guidance treat trust signals as informational rather than guarantees.

After using the app, review and remove permissions separately

When you finish, review the wallet’s connected sites and active token allowances. Disconnecting a dapp and revoking an on-chain allowance are separate actions: disconnecting alone does not remove an allowance. Use a trusted wallet or explorer tool to revoke permissions you no longer need, and check both the connected-site list and allowances. MetaMask’s dapp guide and Ethereum.org’s scam guidance cover wallet permission management.
