For actual earnings, use the stream’s estimated ad revenue in YouTube Analytics for the calendar month, with live and replay activity scoped to match the total you want. To forecast a month before the figures are available, use monthly views ÷ 1,000 × your channel’s ad-only RPM. Treat that calculation as an estimate: views do not equal ad impressions, and YouTube does not guarantee that eligible ad slots will serve.
Use YouTube Analytics for actual monthly ad revenue
When the month has been reported, prefer YouTube Analytics’ estimated ad revenue over a projection derived from CPM or a generic rate. Set the reporting period to the calendar month and identify whether the figure includes the live broadcast, the on-demand replay, or both. If comparing channels or months, use the same reporting time zone and content scope.
- Choose the reporting window. Set the date range to the calendar month. Note the channel’s reporting time zone when comparing it with another report.
- Filter for the relevant stream. Select the stream or its replay as appropriate. YouTube says Analytics can break out live-stream ad revenue with the Live filter; where available, use the live/on-demand distinction to separate broadcast and replay activity.
- Read estimated ad revenue for the chosen scope. Sum the relevant content’s estimated ad revenue for that reporting period. Do not add a replay’s later-month earnings to the live-period total if the selected date range and report already include both.
- Recheck after month-end. Estimated revenue can be adjusted after the month closes.
YouTube’s Analytics API calls the ad-only metric estimatedAdRevenue: estimated net revenue from Google-sold advertising for the selected date range and region. It is subject to month-end adjustments and excludes partner-sold or partner-served advertising. The broader estimatedRevenue metric includes Google-sold ads and non-advertising sources, so it is not interchangeable with ad-only earnings. Forecast revenue when the month is not reported yet
Use your own historical ad-only RPM for comparable loop streams, along with the monthly view forecast:

Estimated monthly ad revenue = monthly views ÷ 1,000 × channel-specific ad-only RPM
For example, if you have a reliable ad-only RPM from comparable streams, multiply that figure by the forecast views expressed in thousands. Keep the result labeled as a planning estimate, not a promise. If you show low, base, and high cases, derive them from that channel’s actual range rather than inventing a universal RPM.

YouTube defines RPM as creator revenue after YouTube’s revenue share per 1,000 views. It can include several revenue sources, including some non-ad revenue, so a broad RPM only approximates ad earnings. Use an ad-only RPM where available and state the limitation if you use a broader one. YouTube notes that RPM can change when the proportion of unmonetized views changes or when non-ad revenue changes. Its guidance also says RPM is useful but cannot tell the whole revenue story: Understand ad revenue analytics.
Why CPM is not your creator earnings rate
Do not estimate creator revenue by multiplying CPM by all views. CPM is estimated gross advertiser spend per 1,000 ad impressions. Playback-based CPM is advertiser spend per 1,000 video playbacks where one or more ads are shown. Neither is the creator’s net revenue per 1,000 views, and not every view has an ad.

YouTube’s official example illustrates the distinction, not a typical rate: 5,000 views, 1,500 monetized playbacks, and 2,000 ad impressions; with $7 in advertiser spend, CPM is $3.50 and playback-based CPM is $4.67. Those figures explain the metrics and should not be used as a forecast. YouTube’s guidance explicitly notes that revenue will not equal CPM multiplied by views because CPM reflects what advertisers pay, not what the creator earns. See YouTube’s definitions and example.
Metrics that explain a loop stream’s result
Use these metrics to diagnose why a month’s earnings differ from a forecast or another month. Definitions for the API metrics are in YouTube’s Analytics API documentation.

What changes monthly revenue
Ad delivery is not guaranteed
YouTube says, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Its systems decide whether to serve an ad based on multiple factors, so a live stream’s eligible slots do not guarantee impressions or earnings. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
Mid-roll settings affect opportunities, not guaranteed outcomes
Live streams can use automatic or manual mid-rolls. YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls; its system may pause ads around high-engagement moments and some viewer interactions. YouTube reported that creators who chose live automatic mid-roll ads saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour. That was a platform-reported comparison between channels that enabled live automatic mid-rolls and those that did not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. It is a dated group comparison, not a forecast or guaranteed lift for an individual channel. Read YouTube’s live-stream ad guidance.

Viewer geography and season affect advertiser demand
CPM can vary with audience geography and time of year; advertiser bids may rise around holidays. A raw CPM comparison across months or audiences can therefore mislead unless those differences are considered. YouTube explains CPM variability.
Live and replay earnings may fall in different reporting periods
A live broadcast and its replay can generate ad revenue in different periods. Decide whether your monthly figure means revenue earned by the stream during that month or revenue associated with the broadcast plus its replay over a broader period, then apply that scope consistently using Analytics’ available live and on-demand reporting dimensions. Compare months or loop streams fairly
- Use estimated ad revenue for the same calendar range, time zone, and content scope.
- Keep live activity and replay activity distinct where the report allows it.
- Compare views alongside monetized playbacks and the monetized-playback rate.
- Check ad impressions per monetized playback and playback-based CPM.
- Account for audience geography, seasonality, and mid-roll configuration before treating CPM differences as performance differences.
