Estimate your power needs by listing the devices you’ll use, calculating how much energy each needs for the entire trip, and comparing that total with the usable energy in your power bank. The result depends on your device use and chances to recharge—not just the number of days on the trail. Use watt-hours (Wh) when comparing batteries, account for charging losses, and treat solar as a possible supplement rather than guaranteed daily power.

1. List the devices you’ll actually power

Include only equipment you expect to run or recharge during the trip. Depending on your setup, that might include a phone used for offline navigation, a GPS device, satellite messenger, watch, camera, or rechargeable headlamp. Note each device’s battery capacity and how you plan to use it.

Do not assume that a phone or messenger will provide reliable emergency communication: backcountry cellular service can be limited or absent. The National Park Service includes navigation and illumination in its Ten Essentials guidance, which recommends carrying independent supplies such as extra phone and headlamp batteries.

2. Estimate use between recharge opportunities

For every device, estimate how many full-equivalent charges—or how many operating hours—it will need from the start of the trip until you can recharge it. Base the estimate on your plans: offline maps, screen time, photos, GPS tracking, messages, and how often you use a headlamp all affect demand. A trip’s duration matters, but days alone do not determine the power budget.

Write down the estimate for each device and add the values. For example, if a device needs two full-equivalent charges, count twice its battery energy. This is a planning estimate, not a promise that a power bank’s advertised capacity will deliver exactly that many charges.

3. Convert device capacity to watt-hours

Battery energy is best compared in watt-hours (Wh), especially when devices or power banks use different voltages. If the device specification gives Wh, use that figure. If it gives milliamp-hours (mAh) and nominal battery voltage, calculate:

Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × nominal voltage

Use the battery’s nominal voltage in this calculation, not the USB output voltage. Add the estimated Wh for each device and multiply by its planned full-equivalent charges where appropriate.

REI’s power-capacity guide illustrates the arithmetic with an iPhone 14 battery listed at 3,200 mAh: two full-equivalent charges total 6,400 mAh in that example. It is an illustration, not a universal trip recommendation. Because mAh depends on voltage, that total cannot be directly compared with a power bank’s mAh rating unless the voltage basis is also understood.

4. Allow for energy lost during charging

A power bank’s stored energy is not all delivered to a device. Voltage conversion and the device’s charging circuitry use some energy, so a bank rated for a certain amount of stored energy will provide less usable energy at its outputs. Compare Wh ratings when possible and leave a conservative margin based on manufacturer guidance and your own experience with the specific devices, bank, cables, and conditions.

For context, Anker’s support explanation converts a 20,000 mAh bank at a nominal 3.7 V to 74 Wh of stored cell energy, then uses an example assumption of 82% power-bank conversion efficiency and about 15% device charging loss. Those are vendor examples, not guaranteed efficiencies for every product or charging situation; temperature, cables, devices, and charging conditions can affect actual results.

5. Choose capacity without carrying unnecessary weight

Once you have an estimated trip load, compare candidate power sources by usable energy, weight, outputs, connector and voltage compatibility, charging speed, and how you can replenish the bank. Also consider weather and handling suitability, and whether your route gives a solar panel a realistic chance to receive sun. A larger bank adds weight; a smaller one may leave too little reserve if your use is higher than expected.

REI recommends considering likely device use, the number of devices, time away from charging, and whether you will be mobile or stationary when choosing a power bank. Its buying advice notes the trade-off: underestimating capacity risks running out, while oversizing adds weight. Check the maker’s specifications for output ports, compatibility, and recharge time rather than choosing by headline mAh alone.

6. Reduce avoidable drain and keep independent backups

  • Download maps and other needed information before departure.
  • Limit unnecessary screen use and switch to airplane mode when appropriate. Great Smoky Mountains National Park notes that service is extremely limited there and recommends airplane mode when relying on a phone to prevent rapid battery drain; see its backcountry camping guidance.
  • Do not make a phone your sole navigation or lighting plan. Carry a paper map and compass as appropriate, plus a dedicated headlamp or flashlight and spare batteries.

National Park Service Ten Essentials guidance and Yellowstone backcountry guidance both support planning for navigation and lighting beyond a phone. Yellowstone also warns that backcountry cell service is limited to nonexistent and says not to rely on phones for navigation or emergencies.

7. Count solar only when the trip can support it

A solar panel may supplement stored power if your electronics need more energy than your bank holds, but its contribution depends on sun exposure, weather, route, panel placement, and compatible regulated output. It is not a reliable fixed daily allowance without trip-specific evidence. Check that the panel’s output is compatible with the bank or small device you intend to charge; REI describes solar as a possible supplement and advises checking manufacturer guidance for regulated USB output when charging small devices directly.

A simple worksheet

Device Battery energy (Wh) Estimated full-equivalent charges or use Estimated trip energy (Wh)
Phone Use device specification or convert mAh with nominal voltage Your planned map, screen, and communication use Battery Wh × estimated charges
GPS, messenger, watch, camera, or headlamp Use device specification or convert mAh with nominal voltage Your planned operating time or charges Estimate from device Wh and use
Total device load Add device estimates

Compare the total with the power bank’s Wh rating, then account for charging losses with a conservative margin. If the itinerary includes a genuine recharge opportunity, estimate only the energy needed between those opportunities. Keep safety-critical navigation and illumination independent of the power budget.
