Estimate MediaPackage charges as ingest volume × regional ingest rate + origin/packaging volume × regional origin rate. Ingest depends on the bitrate and number of incoming streams; origin and packaging depend on audience video volume that misses the CDN cache. Encoding, CDN delivery and applicable data transfer belong on separate lines. AWS’s published 24/7 example totals $1.3505 per hour for MediaPackage ingest plus origin/packaging in US East (N. Virginia), but only under its stated assumptions—not as a general quote or complete YouTube-streaming bill.
What you need before estimating
Gather the workload inputs first. Without them, a price-per-hour figure can be misleading.
- AWS Region and workflow: identify the Region and MediaPackage version or workflow you plan to use.
- Incoming streams: record the number of MediaPackage input streams and each stream’s bitrate ladder. Use the sum of all bitrates received by the channel.
- Operating hours: a continuous channel runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For a monthly estimate, state the assumed billable hours rather than treating every month as identical.
- Audience: use average concurrent viewers over the full day, not only the peak.
- Watched bitrate: estimate the average bitrate viewers actually watch.
- CDN cache ratio: estimate the cache-hit ratio or, equivalently, the share of viewer volume that reaches MediaPackage.
- Other services: identify whether delivery uses CloudFront or another CDN, and which other AWS services are in the design.
AWS bills the relevant live MediaPackage ingest and origin/packaging quantities by GB. The regional rates and workload determine the result, so use current rates for your Region rather than treating example rates as universal.
Calculate ingest charges
Convert the total incoming bitrate to GB per hour, multiply by the number of input streams, then multiply by active hours and the current regional ingest price per GB.

- Ingest GB per hour = total input bitrate converted to GB/h × number of input streams.
- Ingest cost = ingest GB/h × active hours × current regional ingest price per GB.
In AWS’s pricing-page example, one 9.5 Mbps input stream becomes 4.175 GB per hour using AWS’s stated conversion. Two redundant input streams therefore produce 8.35 GB/h of ingest. At the example rate of $0.030/GB in US East (N. Virginia), AWS calculates $0.2505 per hour for ingest. Calculate origin and packaging charges
Start with audience video volume, then apply the share that is not served from the CDN cache. The cache-hit ratio reduces MediaPackage origin volume; it does not remove the CDN’s own delivery charges.

- Viewer GB = average watched bitrate × average concurrent viewers × hours, converted to GB.
- MediaPackage origin GB = viewer GB × (1 − CDN cache/hit ratio).
- Origin/packaging cost = MediaPackage origin GB × current regional origin/packaging price per GB.
For its example, AWS assumes 1,000 average viewers watching at 2 Mbps each. Using AWS’s conversion, that is 878.91 GB/h. With a 97.5% CDN cache/hit ratio, 2.5% reaches MediaPackage: 21.97 GB/h. At the example’s $0.050/GB origin/packaging rate, AWS calculates $1.10 per hour. Worked example: AWS’s 24/7 channel estimate
AWS combines the example ingest and origin/packaging amounts to show a MediaPackage subtotal of $1.3505 per hour in US East (N. Virginia): $0.2505/h ingest plus $1.10/h origin and packaging. Its assumptions are two 9.5 Mbps input streams, 1,000 average viewers at 2 Mbps, a 97.5% cache/hit ratio, and the example regional rates. Keep the MediaPackage subtotal separate from the full bill
MediaPackage is only one part of a live-streaming architecture. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS example separates MediaLive encoding, MediaPackage ingest, MediaPackage packaging/origination and CloudFront distribution. Show the MediaPackage subtotal separately, then add the charges for the services your design actually uses. Sample architecture rates can age and depend on workload. Live Streaming on AWS
- Encoding: include the encoder or encoding service used by your workflow.
- CDN delivery: include delivery charges separately from MediaPackage origin volume.
- Data transfer: AWS says data transfer can apply when output goes over the internet or through a CDN other than CloudFront.
- Other services: include any applicable storage, transfer or supporting-service charges in their own lines.
AWS recommends using a CDN such as CloudFront because cache hits lower the volume originated and packaged by MediaPackage. Check current AWS pricing and validate the service mix in the Pricing Calculator; do not compare a MediaPackage-only subtotal with another option’s all-in delivery total.

Check the YouTube publishing path before pricing the architecture
Do not assume that MediaPackage itself is the YouTube encoder or that a direct MediaPackage-to-YouTube path is established. YouTube’s guidance describes configuring an encoder with a YouTube stream URL and key for RTMP(S). YouTube also supports HLS ingest, subject to its segment, playlist and HTTPS requirements. Confirm the actual protocol-conversion and publishing components in your intended design before presenting the costs as an integrated workflow. HLS can have higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments.

- Input bitrate ladder and number of redundant inputs.
- Average concurrent viewers and average watched bitrate.
- CDN cache ratio and resulting origin fraction.
- AWS Region and the current rates used for each service.
- Active hours and the month’s assumed billable hours.
- Separate encoder, CDN, transfer and other service charges.
AWS’s pricing-page conversion uses 1024 in converting bitrate to volume. Keep that convention consistent through the calculation rather than mixing binary and decimal conversions. Round only after calculating the underlying volumes and costs.
