To estimate a Pokémon card’s current value, identify the exact printing, separate raw cards from graded ones, assess condition, then compare several recent completed sales of the closest matches. Use those transactions to form a reasonable range—not a guaranteed selling price. An active listing shows an asking price, not what a buyer paid.

What determines a Pokémon card’s value?

There is no single timeless value for a card considered without details. Its identity, printing, condition, grading status, market location, and the date of a sale all affect what a comparable copy may sell for. A useful estimate is therefore tied to a particular version of the card and a set of recent transactions.

Identify the exact card and printing

Before looking up prices, record the card’s name, set, printed card number, language, and any meaningful printing or finish variation. Similar names are not enough: comparisons should be for the same card version wherever possible. eBay says its Price Guide matches a card to the same card and, when available, the same grade.

Separate raw cards from graded cards

Raw, or ungraded, copies belong in a different comparison group from cards authenticated and encapsulated by a grading company. For a graded card, look for sales with the same grading company and numeric grade where possible. For a raw card, compare copies described in similar condition and inspect listing photos and sale details rather than assuming that a seller’s condition label guarantees a match.

PSA distinguishes authentication, which verifies that a card is genuine, from grading, which assesses quality and condition. A visual self-assessment can help you choose relevant raw-card comparisons, but it is not an official professional grade.

Inspect the card’s condition

Compare the copy you own or plan to buy against the condition evidence visible in each sale. PSA’s guidance directs collectors to examine the surface, edges, centering, folds or creases, stains, and other damage; gloss and corner condition are also relevant when judging a card’s eye appeal.

  • Centering: Check the borders on the front and back for uneven margins.
  • Corners and edges: Look for whitening, wear, chips, or softened corners.
  • Surface and gloss: Inspect for scratches, marks, fading, or loss of original gloss.
  • Stains, folds, and damage: Note any crease, stain, dent, or other visible defect that makes a sale a poorer comparison.

PSA describes a Gem Mint 10 as “a virtually perfect card.” Its Grade 10 criteria include sharp corners, sharp focus, full original gloss, no staining, and approximate centering tolerances. PSA also notes that eye appeal can involve subjective judgment at the margins, so a clean-looking card is not a promise of a particular grade.

Find completed sales, not hopeful asking prices

Search for completed or sold transactions for the exact card and the matching raw or graded comparison group. Do not treat the highest active listing—or any unsold asking price—as evidence of what a buyer paid.

eBay’s Price Guide covers supported trading-card games including Pokémon in English and Japanese. eBay says the guide uses completed eBay sales, includes accepted Best Offer prices in its median sold price, and shows transaction details and historical trends. This makes completed transactions more useful for estimating market value than active asking prices.

Compare sales and form an estimate

  1. Collect several close matches. Prefer recent transactions for the same card, printing, language, and condition; for graded cards, match company and grade when available.
  2. Check each transaction. Note its sale date and price, whether it is a single card or part of a lot, and whether the condition and version genuinely match.
  3. Set aside weak comparisons. Exclude different printings, grades, lots, or copies with notably different condition. Do not let one unusually high or low result determine the estimate by itself.
  4. Summarize the remaining evidence. Use a reasonable range or central estimate based on the closest sales. State the currency, market, and timeframe; avoid implying precision that the comparisons cannot support.

Prices can change with condition, timing, demand, and other market factors. A comparable sale is evidence of a transaction in that market at that time, not a guarantee that your copy will sell for the same amount.

Understand the limits of eBay’s Price Guide

eBay says its Price Guide data updates every 24 hours, draws primarily on eBay sales, and can show up to two years of completed transactions. The guide is currently available only in the US, so it should not be treated as a universal global price reference. It may also lag real-time changes, and its displayed figure is a reference rather than guaranteed proceeds from a future sale.

Keep the card safe while checking

Protecting the card is optional to the value lookup itself. PSA recommends using a penny sleeve and semi-rigid card holder for protection; neither is required to search sales or estimate market value.
