If your organization has enabled automatic Intune enrollment for your account, enrollment can happen during this connection flow. Entra registration by itself does not mean the device is enrolled in Intune MDM.
Registration and Intune enrollment are different
Microsoft Entra registration links a device to your organization’s identity system; it does not require your work account to become the Windows sign-in. Intune MDM enrollment is a separate management state that allows the organization to apply device policies, such as required encryption, password complexity, or current security software. Microsoft states that “Microsoft Entra Registration isn’t the same as device enrollment.” (Microsoft Learn: What are Microsoft Entra registered devices?)
For a personally owned Windows device, the Intune enrollment guide classifies an Entra-registered device as personally owned. Do not assume that seeing the device in Entra means it is managed: check its work or school connection and its enrollment status in Intune. (Microsoft Learn: Enroll a Windows device in Intune)
What the administrator must configure
Automatic enrollment depends on the organization’s Intune and Microsoft Entra configuration, user eligibility, and device policies. The administrator should verify the following before the user retries the connection flow:

- Intune is the organization’s MDM authority, and the tenant is set up to enroll the relevant users and devices.
- The user has an appropriate Intune license. Microsoft’s Windows automatic-enrollment prerequisites also specify Microsoft Entra ID P1 or P2, or a trial; the organization should confirm the entitlements in its current plan. (Windows enrollment prerequisites)
- The Windows version and edition, user group, device group, and enrollment restrictions allow this enrollment scenario.
- The Microsoft Intune MDM user scope includes the user. None turns off automatic enrollment, Some targets selected users, and All targets all users. (Configure automatic enrollment)
- If personal-device users are in both the MDM and Windows Information Protection (WIP) scopes, check the scope overlap: WIP scope can take precedence for BYOD devices and prevent device-management enrollment.
Connect the personal Windows device
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts, then Access work or school.
- Select Connect.
- Enter the work or school account used for your organization’s Microsoft 365 services, then complete any authentication prompts.
- If automatic MDM enrollment is enabled for your account, let the enrollment finish and review any setup status shown. If the account connects but enrollment does not occur, ask your administrator whether you should complete a separate MDM enrollment flow.
Windows labels can vary by version. Use Connect for this account-connection path. Do not choose Join this device to Microsoft Entra ID unless your administrator intends to Entra-join the device; joining can change its relationship to the organization and is not the same procedure as connecting a work account on an already registered personal device. If Intune enrollment does not complete
Start by distinguishing a successful work-account connection from successful MDM enrollment. If the account is connected but the device is not enrolled, ask the administrator to check the tenant and user settings below rather than repeating sign-in without resolving the cause.

Administrator checks
- Confirm the user’s Intune license and eligibility, the tenant’s automatic-enrollment configuration, and whether the user falls within the MDM scope.
- Check for overlapping MDM and WIP scopes affecting personal devices, along with enrollment restrictions and the relevant user and device group membership.
- Confirm whether the organization requires a separate MDM enrollment step when automatic enrollment is not configured for this user.
Device and account checks
- Check whether the device is already connected to the organization or enrolled with another MDM provider. Existing management can complicate enrollment; the Intune enrollment guidance says to unenroll from the existing provider. Depending on the platform and enrollment scenario, a reset may also be required. Windows is listed among platforms that do not generally require a factory reset for Intune enrollment, but that does not remove the need to resolve existing management. - Verify that the sign-in identity is the organization account intended for enrollment and that authentication completed successfully.
- Check that the account has the required privileges for the specific flow and that the Windows edition supports it. Microsoft’s Windows guidance identifies Windows Home as unsupported for the Entra join flow; that limitation should not be treated as a universal ban on every MDM-only enrollment path. When contacting IT, provide the Windows edition, the account used, whether the account appears under Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, any message or setup status displayed, and whether another management service is installed. These details help distinguish a scope or licensing issue from an existing-device-management conflict. (Microsoft Learn: Windows enrollment troubleshooting)
