You can enjoy a long game without promising yourself you’ll finish it. Treat a session as worthwhile on its own: pick a small goal, play until a natural pause, and save if the game allows. When it stops sounding fun, you can take a break, switch games, or leave it unfinished.

Make each session its own small experience

A large game can feel like a project when the only acceptable outcome seems to be reaching the credits. Instead, decide what would make the next session satisfying. That might be finishing one mission, exploring an area, or simply playing until you reach a comfortable stopping point. A good session does not have to advance you toward completion.

  1. Choose what appeals now. Pick a game because you want to play it today, not because it has been waiting longest.
  2. Set a modest aim. Choose one quest, location, or other short goal—or leave the goal open and stop at a natural pause.
  3. Decide roughly how long you want to play. A preselected time commitment can help you get started; it is a suggestion, not a required or ideal duration. The Washington Post’s backlog advice also suggests using a visual cue during play to keep that intention in mind.
  4. Save when you can. Use a manual save, checkpoint, or other save option before stopping if the game provides one. Features differ, so do not assume every game lets you save anywhere.
  5. Afterward, choose freely. Return next time, take a break, or move on. The time you spent is not wasted just because you did not finish.

Use the tools the game offers to make play easier

Make the next objective clear

If you have been away for a while, you do not necessarily need to restart. Check the game’s journal, quest log, map markers, or current-objective reminder, if available, to work out what you were doing. The Game Accessibility Guidelines recommend reminders of current objectives because remembering what to do or where to go can be difficult after a long break. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 109 also recommends making goals easy to understand, including in games with complex stories or vague directions.

Adjust difficulty or bypass a frustrating challenge

When a difficult section is blocking the part you want to experience, look for difficulty settings, accessibility options, or a way to skip that challenge. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108 recommends multiple difficulty options so players with different skill levels can enjoy and complete games. The Game Accessibility Guidelines also recommend ways to bypass gameplay outside a game’s core mechanic. These are design recommendations; whether any option exists depends on the title.

Look for saving that suits your play habits

Some games allow manual saves; others rely on checkpoints or fixed save points. A 2025 literature review on cognitive-accessibility recommendations advises games to support manual saving or include many strategically placed save points. That is a useful feature to look for when choosing a game, not a guarantee that any particular title supports saving at will. The review also discusses clear, consistent language and opportunities to learn without failing.

Choose a game that fits the time and energy you have

If choosing from a backlog feels like another task, narrow the options rather than trying to clear the whole list. A short comparison can make the decision easier without turning play into homework:

What to consider Ask yourself How to use it
Interest today Does this game sound enjoyable right now? Let current curiosity count more than backlog order or the time you have already invested.
Session fit Can I reach a satisfying pause in the time I have? Use your judgment. Runtime estimates cannot promise how long your own session will take.
Estimated length Does the likely time commitment feel appealing? HowLongToBeat lists average runtimes by play style, according to the Washington Post. Treat them as estimates, not guarantees for your playthrough.
Save and checkpoint support Can I stop at a point that feels safe and convenient? Check how the game handles saving and checkpoints; implementations vary.
Objective clarity Will I be able to tell what to do after a break? Look for a clear quest log, map markers, or objective reminders.
Challenge flexibility Can I adjust difficulty or bypass an optional, frustrating section? Check the game’s settings and accessibility options; availability varies by title.

Backlog cataloguing services can help you organize options, but they are optional. The Washington Post discusses tools such as Backloggd as ways to manage a list. You do not need to maintain a list—or finish everything on it—to justify what you play.

Know when to pause, switch, or stop

If you repeatedly put off a game, feel relief when a session ends, or would rather play something else, those are good reasons to pause or move on. You can return later without starting over if the game’s reminders and saves make that practical. You can also decide that you have had enough of it. Finishing is one possible goal for a leisure activity, not the test of whether the time you spent mattered.
