For the clearest screenshot, fix the capture before trying to fix the file: frame only the content you need, make small text readable on screen, and capture at a useful size. Then preserve the original, crop or annotate a copy, and use upscaling only as a limited rescue. Sharpening or enlarging can change how an image looks, but it cannot reliably restore information that was never captured.
First identify what is making the screenshot look poor
The right fix depends on whether the problem is missing pixels, unreadable content, compression, or a display mismatch. Start by comparing the file with the screen or original image it came from, if that source is still available.
- Too small or pixelated: the screenshot may have been captured at a small size or enlarged after capture. Recapture at the size needed for the final use when possible.
- Soft after sharing: the messaging, document, or social app may have resized, compressed, or converted the image. The exact cause depends on the app and workflow; there is no universal repair.
- Text is hard to read: enlarge the page zoom or interface text before capture, then select a tighter region. This makes the source easier to read; it does not add image detail.
- Colors or highlights look different: check whether the image is HDR and whether the screen or destination supports HDR. HDR can appear as SDR on a standard display.
Do not confuse changing your monitor’s scaling with improving an existing image. Scaling controls how interface elements appear on a display; it does not restore pixels that are absent from a screenshot.
Recapture for the most faithful result
If the original screen is available, a new capture is generally more reliable than trying to reconstruct detail from a small or blurry file. Before capturing, make the relevant page or app readable, close distractions, and choose the narrowest useful framing: a specific region, window, or full screen only when the whole screen matters.

Mac
On a Mac, use the built-in shortcuts:
- Shift-Command-3: capture the whole screen.
- Shift-Command-4: drag to select an area.
- Shift-Command-4, then Space: capture a window or menu.
- Shift-Command-5: open the Screenshot app; this shortcut is documented for macOS Mojave 10.14 and later.
On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple’s documented Screenshot workflow offers SDR (PNG) or HDR (HEIF). Some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow screenshots of their windows. Availability therefore depends on the app, Mac, and operating-system version.
iPhone
On iPhone, the Screen Capture settings are at Settings > General > Screen Capture. In Apple’s documented workflow, SDR screenshots use PNG, which is suitable for most computer displays and mobile devices. HDR screenshots use HEIF and need an HDR display to show their full quality; on a standard display, they may appear in SDR.
Windows, Android, and Linux
Use the built-in capture tool for your device and check its current instructions for the operating-system version and manufacturer. Shortcuts and format options vary. On Windows in particular, do not assume an image-enhancement feature is a general screenshot setting: Microsoft’s Photos super-resolution feature has specific hardware and operating-system requirements, described below.

Choose a format that suits the destination
Format choice matters most when a capture is transferred, edited, or viewed in a different environment. PNG is a practical choice for ordinary SDR screenshots in Apple’s documented Mac and iPhone workflows. HEIF is used for HDR in those documented workflows, but the viewer needs HDR support to show the full result. A format option available on one device or OS may not be available on another.

If the image will be sent through an app, check whether that app resizes or converts images. Keep the original file and inspect the received copy before concluding that the capture itself is blurry. Repeated export cycles can also reduce quality, so avoid saving over the only original.
Edit a copy, not the only original
For a guide, support request, or presentation, editing should make the relevant information easier to see without changing what the screenshot appears to prove.

- Duplicate the original. Keep an untouched copy in case you need to compare details or produce a different crop later.
- Crop to the useful area. Remove unrelated screen space, but leave enough context that the reader can understand what the visible controls or message belong to.
- Annotate sparingly. Arrows, boxes, or brief labels can direct attention. Avoid covering the very text or control the image is meant to explain.
- Remove private information. Check for email addresses, usernames, account details, notifications, and other personal information before sharing. Use an opaque cover or crop rather than a blur if the underlying text must not be recoverable.
- Export once for the destination. Use the requirements of the site, document, or print workflow instead of repeatedly resizing and saving the same file.
For screenshots made for Mozilla’s contributor knowledge base, its guide suggests keeping both dimensions below 620 pixels to support that site’s loading and accessibility needs. That is a context-specific recommendation, not a universal maximum: retain a larger original for print, archival use, or later analysis, and follow the destination’s actual requirements.
When upscaling can help—and when it cannot
Upscaling enlarges an image and may sharpen its appearance, which can help make an existing image easier to view. It does not guarantee recovery of the original information. This distinction matters when accuracy is important, such as when a screenshot is being used to read interface labels or document evidence.
Microsoft Photos super resolution
Microsoft Photos includes a super-resolution feature for images on Copilot+ PCs running Windows 11. Microsoft describes it as an image enlargement and sharpening feature with selectable enhancement levels, processed locally using a non-generative AI model. This is a specific Photos feature on eligible hardware, not a universal Windows screenshot option.

If it is available on your device, work on a copy and compare the result with the original. Treat any newly crisp-looking details cautiously: sharpening can alter apparent edges, and enhancement is not proof that a small label or number has been faithfully recovered.
Windows AI API scaling
Microsoft’s Windows AI API documentation describes image super resolution with a maximum scaling factor of 8x; it warns that higher factors can introduce artifacts and compromise accuracy. That is an API limit, not a promise that 8x is ideal for every image or that the result will be accurate. For text-heavy screenshots, prefer recapture or the unaltered original whenever possible.
Common fixes that do not improve captured detail
- Increasing display resolution after capture: this does not put missing pixels back into the file.
- Changing Photoshop or monitor UI scaling: Adobe’s Windows guidance concerns how Photoshop’s interface adapts to display scaling, not how an existing screenshot gains resolution. Its documented Photoshop UI scaling options run from 100% to 400% in 25% increments; those figures describe the app interface, not image enlargement.
- Enlarging a tiny image repeatedly: this can make artifacts and softness more visible without restoring the source detail.
- Assuming every screenshot should be under 620 pixels: Mozilla’s dimensions are for its own knowledge-base context. They are not a general quality rule.

Troubleshoot a blurry or unexpected result
- The image is blurry only after sending: compare the local original with the received copy. If they differ, check the sharing app’s image-size or compression behavior and send the original file where possible.
- The screenshot itself is too small: return to the source and capture again at a useful size. If recapture is impossible, crop or enlarge a copy, but do not treat the enlargement as recovered detail.
- Text is tiny even at full size: increase the page zoom or interface text before capturing and select only the relevant region.
- HDR colors look different elsewhere: verify the destination’s HDR support or create an SDR capture when the documented device workflow offers that choice.
- A Mac app window cannot be captured: some apps restrict screenshots. Capture an allowed portion of the screen if appropriate; do not assume a different file format will bypass an app restriction.
- Super resolution creates strange edges or text: compare against the original and use the original for accuracy-sensitive work. Enhancement may introduce artifacts and is not a source of missing evidence.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a screenshot clearer without the original screen?
You can crop, adjust, or upscale a copy to make it easier to view, but those steps cannot guarantee recovery of detail that is missing from the file. Preserve the original and label an enhanced version as edited when fidelity matters.
Should I use PNG or HEIF?
For SDR screenshots in the Apple workflows described here, PNG is the documented choice. HDR captures use HEIF and need HDR-capable viewing for their full appearance. Confirm that the apps and devices in your own workflow support the format.
Does AI enhancement prove what blurred text says?
No. A sharper-looking result is not proof that the displayed detail matches the source. For a label, number, or other accuracy-sensitive text, verify against the original screen or another reliable source.
