To send a live stream from FFmpeg to YouTube with H.264 video and AAC audio, use an H.264 encoder available in your FFmpeg build, encode audio as AAC, set a constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, then send the output to your YouTube Live ingest destination—preferably over RTMPS. The right video bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate; YouTube currently recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30, 17 Mbps for 1080p60, and 8 Mbps for both 720p30 and 720p60. These are recommendations, not guarantees of a stable stream.
There is no single reliable command for every input or FFmpeg installation. The example below shows the command structure and settings; replace the input, stream mapping, encoder, and destination with values appropriate to your source and setup.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for H.264 and AAC
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports H.264 video and AAC audio for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Do not exceed four seconds between keyframes. The guidance is a live-maintained YouTube Help page verified on October 3, 2026; check it again before a broadcast because platform recommendations can change.
| Setting | Recommended starting point | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data on the way into and through Google’s servers. Your FFmpeg build and YouTube stream setup must support it. |
| Video codec | H.264 | Use an H.264 encoder available in your installed FFmpeg build. |
| Audio codec | AAC | YouTube also supports MP3; for this workflow use AAC. |
| Rate control | CBR | Choose a target bitrate appropriate to resolution and frame rate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Calculate the GOP size from the actual frame rate; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps | YouTube’s listed stereo audio settings. |
| 5.1 audio | 48 kHz, 384 Kbps | YouTube lists AAC for 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS. |
Choose bitrate by resolution and frame rate
The following H.264 values are YouTube’s current recommended video bitrates, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them or that the resulting stream will look a particular way.

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
Use a resolution and frame rate that suit the source and your upload connection. A higher target bitrate cannot compensate for an unstable connection, and unnecessarily increasing output resolution does not add detail to a lower-resolution source.
Prepare your input and FFmpeg build
Check available encoders and protocols
FFmpeg builds differ: an encoder or protocol available on one installation may be missing from another. Check your local build before constructing the command:
ffmpeg -encoderslists encoders. Confirm that your chosen H.264 encoder and AAC encoder are available.ffmpeg -protocolslists supported protocols. Confirm the required RTMPS protocol is available if you plan to use an RTMPS destination.ffmpeg -i input.extprobes a media file and reports its streams. Replaceinput.extwith your actual input path or source.
These checks report capabilities and media details; they do not verify that a particular encoder, machine, or network can sustain a live broadcast.

Decide whether to transcode or copy
To convert media to H.264 and AAC, transcode it: FFmpeg decodes the input and encodes new video and audio streams. Encoding is typically lossy and uses computing resources. -c copy is streamcopy: it passes encoded packets through without decoding and re-encoding, so it does not convert incompatible input codecs to H.264 or AAC. Use streamcopy only when the existing streams already meet the needs of the destination.

Build the FFmpeg command
FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output that follows them. Put input-specific options before -i; put output encoding and muxing options after the input and before the output destination. The example below assumes one input file with a video stream and an audio stream, output at 1080p30, and a build that provides libx264, AAC encoding, and RTMPS support.
ffmpeg -re -i input.ext
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14M -minrate 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is a command pattern, not a universally valid or tested command. Replace the input and destination with the values supplied for your YouTube Live stream. Never publish or share a real stream key.

What to change for your source
-rereads a file at its native rate, which is useful when using a prerecorded file as a live-style input. It is not a substitute for capture-specific input settings; omit or adjust it as appropriate for a real-time source.-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0explicitly selects the first video and first audio stream from input 0. Change the mapping if your input has multiple tracks, different stream order, or no audio. Consult FFmpeg’s stream listing from the input probe.-c:v libx264selects the x264 H.264 encoder if present. If your build uses a different H.264 encoder, select an available encoder and check its options. Do not assume every build includeslibx264.-b:v 14M,-minrate 14Mand-maxrate 14Mset the video target and bounds for this example’s 1080p30 recommendation. Rate-control behavior varies by encoder; consult that encoder’s options to ensure the configuration produces CBR output.-bufsize 28Mis an example rate-control buffer value, not a YouTube-prescribed setting. Adjust it for your encoder and latency needs; YouTube’s guidance does not establish a universal buffer size.-r 30sets the output frame rate to 30 fps. Use the rate that fits your source and intended stream; do not force a different rate without considering the resulting frame conversion.-g 60 -keyint_min 60sets a 60-frame GOP for this 30 fps example, corresponding to two seconds. For another frame rate, calculate the frame count for a two-second interval; YouTube specifies the interval, not this FFmpeg command.-sc_threshold 0disables scene-cut keyframes for this x264-style example so the GOP cadence remains predictable. Encoder options are not universal; confirm support and behavior in your build.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2encodes stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, matching YouTube’s listed stereo audio settings.-f flvselects the FLV output container commonly used for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Keep output options before the destination URL.
For 720p or 60 fps
Change the resolution and bitrate to match your source and target. For YouTube’s 720p recommendations, set the video bitrate to 8 Mbps. At 1080p60, use the recommended 17 Mbps. For 720p60 or 1080p60, set the output frame rate to 60 and make the two-second GOP 120 frames; at 30 fps, it is 60 frames. Use a scaling filter only if you intentionally need to resize the input, and choose its dimensions to match the target. Avoid applying a fixed GOP frame count when changing frame rate.
Connect to YouTube Live and verify the stream
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and retrieve its ingest destination and stream key. Keep the key private.
- Substitute the destination and key into the output URL required by your YouTube stream setup. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when supported by your FFmpeg build and stream configuration.
- Run the command and watch FFmpeg’s output for connection, encoder, or muxing errors. A successful local encode alone does not prove YouTube is receiving or accepting the stream.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and messages. Test ahead of time with motion and audio representative of the actual program; YouTube advises testing before going live.
Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder
The named encoder is not available in this build, or the encoder name is wrong. Run ffmpeg -encoders, choose an installed H.264 or AAC encoder, and adjust options to that encoder’s documented capabilities.
RTMPS connection fails
The build may lack the needed protocol support, or the destination URL or stream key may be incorrect. Check ffmpeg -protocols, confirm the current ingest details in YouTube Live Control Room, and verify that you have used the destination format provided by your stream setup.

YouTube reports unstable ingest or dropped frames
The upload connection may not sustain the chosen video bitrate, or the encoder may not be keeping up. Test the connection and system load, then lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level your setup can sustain while staying within YouTube’s supported settings. The published bitrate recommendations are targets, not a connection-speed guarantee.
Video or audio is missing
Explicit mapping may point to a nonexistent stream, or the input may not contain the track you expect. Inspect the input with ffmpeg -i input.ext and update -map accordingly. Remove or revise audio options if the input has no audio.
The stream does not meet the keyframe interval
A GOP value is a frame count, not a time interval. Recalculate it for the chosen frame rate: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps is two seconds, while 120 frames at 60 fps is two seconds. Keep the interval at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum.

Plan the broadcast beyond encoding
Correct codecs and ingest settings do not grant rights to the material or guarantee YouTube monetization. Before streaming prerecorded material, confirm that you have the rights to every video and audio element and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies, including its reused-content rules. Test the complete stream and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running without leaving a computer, OBS, or home connection on, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams uploaded media as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
