You cannot create a 60 fps mode in CONTROL Resonant by changing the Xbox Series S refresh-rate setting alone. Set the console and display up correctly, then check the game’s own graphics or display menu. If the Series S version offers a performance-focused option, select it there. If no such option appears, a 120 Hz console setting cannot force the game to render at 60 fps.

Remedy Entertainment’s official guidance says the graphics options can differ between Xbox Series X and Series S, and the retrieved documentation does not confirm a Series S-specific 60 fps target. The reliable distinction is between the refresh rate your Xbox sends, the signal your television or monitor and HDMI path can carry, and the frame rate the game actually renders.

What “60 fps mode” means on Series S

Frame rate and refresh rate describe different parts of the video chain:

Term What it describes What it can and cannot do for CONTROL Resonant
Frame rate (fps) How many images the game renders each second. Controlled by the game and its graphics modes. A console display setting cannot add a mode that the game does not include.
Refresh rate (Hz) How often the television or monitor refreshes its panel, and the signal rate the Xbox is configured to output. A 120 Hz setting can provide a compatible signal path for high-frame-rate content, but it does not prove that CONTROL Resonant is rendering at 60 fps.
Resolution The number of pixels in the Xbox output, such as 1440p or 1080p. On Series S, reducing resolution can be necessary before 120 Hz becomes available, depending on the display and HDMI bandwidth.
VRR Variable Refresh Rate, which allows a compatible display to vary its refresh timing. Can reduce visible tearing or uneven delivery when supported, but does not raise the game’s frame rate.
HDR High-dynamic-range image presentation. Changes brightness and color handling, not whether a 60 fps game mode exists.

Remedy’s support wording is explicit: a higher display refresh rate can make output look smoother, but it does not force CONTROL Resonant to render at the same number of frames per second or create a graphics mode the game does not provide. The published “up to 120 Hz” figure from the Remedy Entertainment Technical Support and Help Center (2026) describes Xbox Series X|S output capability, not a measured Series S frame-rate result for this game.

Check the Xbox display configuration first

Use the Xbox dashboard to find out what the console and display actually negotiate. The menu labels below are the current path documented for Xbox display troubleshooting.

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Choose Profile & system, then select Settings.
  3. Open General and choose TV & display options.
  4. Select 4K TV details. Review the capabilities the Xbox detects, including supported resolutions, refresh rates, HDR, and related features.
  5. Under Display, choose a resolution supported by the entire setup. If your display, receiver, switch, or cable cannot carry the selected combination, the Xbox may hide higher refresh-rate choices.
  6. Open Refresh rate and select 120 Hz only when that option is available and the connected display supports it.
  7. Open Video modes and enable only features the display confirms it supports, such as HDR10, Variable Refresh Rate, or Auto-Low Latency Mode.

On Series S, the official support guidance notes that 120 Hz may require an output of 1440p or 1080p rather than the current resolution. That is a signal-bandwidth adjustment; it is not a guarantee that CONTROL Resonant will switch to 60 fps.

Look for a performance option inside CONTROL Resonant

After applying the console settings, launch CONTROL Resonant and open its Graphics, Display, or similarly named video menu. Menu names can vary by release, so use the labels shown by your installed build.

  1. Start the game and wait until you can access its main or pause menu.
  2. Open the game’s settings and locate the graphics or display category.
  3. Look for a selector that distinguishes a performance-focused mode from a quality, resolution, or visual-fidelity mode.
  4. If a performance-focused option is listed for the Series S build, select it, apply the change, and restart the game if prompted.
  5. If no performance or 60 fps option is listed, leave the game at its available setting. Do not treat the Xbox’s 120 Hz dashboard value as proof that the game is now running at 60 fps.

Remedy states that the exact graphics options may differ between Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The official material available for this guide does not publish a complete Series S graphics-mode list, a Series S frame-rate target, or an explicit confirmation that the released Series S build includes a selectable 60 fps Performance mode. A secondary technical report has claimed that Series S may have a single 30 fps mode, but that report is not an official Remedy specification. It should not be used either to promise a 60 fps mode or to declare that one is impossible.

What you need for a 120 Hz signal

A compatible game mode is still required, but the following equipment and settings determine whether the Xbox can offer 120 Hz at all.

Component Requirement or check Typical failure
Television or monitor Must support a refresh rate above 60 Hz at the resolution you select. The panel supports 120 Hz only at a lower resolution, or supports 60 Hz exclusively.
HDMI input Use the display’s high-bandwidth or enhanced HDMI input. Some displays require an “Enhanced,” “Deep Color,” or gaming option to be enabled in their own menu. The Xbox sees only 60 Hz because the connected port is limited or its enhanced mode is disabled.
HDMI cable Use an appropriately rated, high-bandwidth cable suitable for the resolution and refresh combination. An older or damaged cable causes the 120 Hz choice to disappear, flicker, or drop out.
Intermediate equipment Receivers, switches, splitters, capture devices, and adapters must pass the same bandwidth and features. A device in the chain limits the signal even though the television and Xbox each support 120 Hz.
Console output The Xbox must detect the display capability in 4K TV details. The option is unavailable because the negotiated mode does not support it.
Game build CONTROL Resonant must expose a compatible performance or 60 fps mode on Series S. 120 Hz is selectable on the dashboard, but the game remains at its own fixed or quality-focused frame rate.

Buying a 120 Hz monitor or television can satisfy the display prerequisite, but it cannot manufacture a missing game-level mode. The same warning applies to a certified HDMI 2.1 cable: it can remove a bandwidth bottleneck, not alter the Series S version of CONTROL Resonant.

Why setting 120 Hz does not automatically produce 60 fps

When you choose 120 Hz, the Xbox is configured to send a higher-refresh signal when the content and hardware support that signal. The setting does not tell every game to render twice as many frames, and it does not convert a 30 fps mode into a 60 fps mode.

A game can render at 30 fps while the console outputs a 120 Hz signal; it can also render at 60 fps while outputting at 120 Hz, with the display receiving repeated or evenly spaced frames. Without a game-provided performance mode or a documented frame-rate target, the dashboard setting alone cannot identify which case applies to CONTROL Resonant.

The only published figure relevant here is “up to 120 Hz” for Xbox Series X|S output in Remedy’s 2026 support guidance. That figure is not a laboratory measurement of CONTROL Resonant on Series S. Keep the three questions separate:

  • Can the Xbox output a 120 Hz signal at the chosen resolution?
  • Can the television, monitor, cable, and any intermediate equipment carry and display that signal?
  • Does the installed Series S game build actually render with a 60 fps performance mode?

The first two can be checked in the Xbox and display menus. The third must be established by the game’s own menu, an official patch or support statement, or a versioned technical test. The available official guidance does not establish it for Series S.

Troubleshoot when 120 Hz is missing

Work through the checks in order. Change one variable at a time so you can identify which part of the signal path is responsible.

1. Confirm the panel’s capability at the selected resolution

Read the television or monitor specifications and its on-screen information panel. Some products advertise 120 Hz but provide it only at 1080p or 1440p, while others expose the feature only through one HDMI input. Return to Settings → General → TV & display options → 4K TV details and compare the Xbox’s detected capabilities with the display’s manual.

2. Select the correct HDMI input

Move the Xbox to the input marked for high bandwidth, 4K, 120 Hz, or enhanced operation. In the display’s settings, enable its enhanced HDMI, high-bandwidth, or gaming mode if the manufacturer requires that switch before higher refresh rates are accepted.

3. Try 1440p or 1080p

On Series S, reduce the Xbox output under Display and check Refresh rate again. The official guidance specifically identifies 1440p and 1080p as resolutions that may be needed before 120 Hz becomes available. This test determines whether the limitation is the bandwidth required by the current resolution, not whether the game has a 60 fps mode.

4. Bypass intermediate devices

Connect the Xbox directly to the television or monitor. Temporarily remove receivers, HDMI switches, splitters, capture hardware, and adapters. If 120 Hz appears in a direct connection, the removed device or its configuration is the bottleneck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Replace the cable and port

Try another appropriately rated high-bandwidth HDMI cable and another compatible display input. Inspect both connectors for damage and avoid unusually long or poorly routed cables while testing. A cable swap is useful only if the replacement is rated for the mode you are attempting.

6. Update and restart

Install available firmware for the television or monitor and system software updates for the Xbox. Then shut down and restart both devices. Recheck 4K TV details after the restart, because the console may not renegotiate a changed HDMI capability until the connection is re-established.

7. Re-enable features one at a time

If 120 Hz works with a basic output, add HDR, VRR, and other video modes individually. A feature combination that exceeds the display or HDMI path’s bandwidth can make the higher refresh option disappear. Record which setting causes the change instead of changing resolution, HDR, VRR, and refresh rate simultaneously.

How VRR and HDR affect the experience

Variable Refresh Rate can make motion appear more consistent when frame delivery varies and both the Xbox and display support VRR across the selected range. It can reduce visible tearing or unevenness, but it does not increase CONTROL Resonant’s frame rate beyond the modes supplied by the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDR changes the image’s brightness and color range. It does not create a performance mode. If you are comparing game settings, keep resolution, HDR, VRR, and refresh rate stable while you switch between the game’s graphics options; otherwise, display processing can be mistaken for a change in rendering performance.

If enabling VRR causes a blank screen, flicker, or loss of 120 Hz, disable it temporarily and verify the basic resolution-and-refresh combination first. Restore VRR only after the display reports a stable compatible signal.

Practical decision guide

What you see Most likely explanation Next action
120 Hz is absent from Xbox settings. The display, chosen resolution, HDMI input, cable, or an intermediate device does not support the negotiated mode. Check 4K TV details, switch to the enhanced input, try 1440p or 1080p, bypass intermediate equipment, and test another cable.
120 Hz is available, but CONTROL Resonant has no performance option. The game menu does not expose a selectable Series S mode in the installed build, or the option is named differently. Review every graphics/display submenu and the game’s current update notes. Do not infer 60 fps from 120 Hz.
A performance option appears in the game. The build provides a game-level mode that may target higher frame delivery. Select it, apply the setting, and restart if requested. Treat the game’s documentation or menu as the authority for its target.
Motion looks smoother after choosing 120 Hz, but no performance mode exists. The display signal or processing changed; that visual difference does not establish a 60 fps render rate. Keep the setting if you prefer the presentation, but do not describe it as confirmed 60 fps without game-specific evidence.
120 Hz works directly but not through a receiver or switch. The intermediate device or its HDMI mode is limiting bandwidth or feature support. Update or reconfigure that device, use a compatible input, or keep the Xbox connected directly.

What is and is not confirmed for Series S

Confirmed by the official support material: Xbox Series X|S can be configured for output up to 120 Hz when the display and HDMI path support the selected mode; Series S may need 1440p or 1080p for 120 Hz; and the exact graphics options can differ between Series X and Series S.

Not confirmed by that material: a named Series S frame-rate target for CONTROL Resonant, or a definitive statement that every Series S release includes a selectable 60 fps Performance mode. Because those details are not published in the available official guidance, avoid claims that Series S definitely has or definitely lacks that mode.

The safest result is therefore conditional: configure the Xbox for the highest compatible refresh rate, verify the signal in 4K TV details, and use the game’s own graphics menu to determine whether a 60 fps-oriented mode is actually available. If the option is missing, no television, monitor, HDMI cable, VRR setting, or dashboard refresh-rate change can force it into existence.
