What to know if the flag is missing or behaves differently
Chrome’s JPEG XL support has changed over time, and official rollout notes do not establish one universal default or flag visibility across every version, channel, platform, or managed installation. Chrome 145 release notes describe a JPEG XL decoder gated by enable-jxl-image-format and the enable_jxl_decoder build flag. An August 24, 2026 Chromium intent-to-ship entry planned to roll out the feature enabled for all users, and Chrome 155 release notes list JPEG XL decoding support. These release and rollout records do not show the live state of an individual browser.
To identify a mismatch, check your Chrome version and platform, then inspect chrome://flags on that installation. Do not assume that enabling the flag is necessary if Chrome already decodes the images you need.

Reset Chrome flags if the change causes problems
Flags are experimental controls, not permanent configuration settings. Google warns that they may change, break, or disappear without notice, and that changing them can affect data, security, or privacy. If Chrome behaves unexpectedly after changing this flag, return to chrome://flags, select Reset all, and relaunch. Google advises enterprise IT administrators not to use flags in production.
Why older guides say Chrome removed JPEG XL
In November 2022, Chromium announced that it would stop an earlier JPEG XL experiment and remove its associated code. Later Chrome documentation describes a different decoder implementation based on jxl-rs, a memory-safe decoder written in Rust. The earlier decision explains why older instructions say Chrome does not support JPEG XL; they refer to the previous experiment, not the later implementation.

What JPEG XL support means
Chrome’s documentation describes the format as capable of progressive decoding, wide color gamut, HDR, high bit depth, and animation. Those are format capabilities, not guarantees that every image or website will look better or load faster. The documentation does not establish a current benchmark comparing JPEG XL with AVIF, WebP, or JPEG.
