To enable YouTube live streaming for the first time, verify your channel, confirm it has no live-streaming restrictions from the past 90 days, then open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. You must be at least 16, and mobile streaming has an additional 50-subscriber minimum.

Check that your channel is eligible

  • Verify the channel. Sign in to the YouTube account that owns the channel and complete channel verification if you have not already.
  • Check for restrictions. YouTube requires that the channel have no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days.
  • Meet the age requirement. YouTube’s general live-streaming eligibility page states that creators must be at least 16 years old.

See YouTube Help’s Get started with live streaming for current eligibility details. If YouTube has restricted live streaming on the channel within the 90-day lookback period, you will need to wait until the restriction no longer falls within that period.

Enable live streaming

  1. On a computer, sign in to the eligible channel and open YouTube Studio.
  2. Select Create → Go live, then follow the on-screen prompts to set up live streaming.
  3. If this is the channel’s first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available. YouTube says that once live streaming is enabled, you can start a stream instantly.

The labels or layout may change; follow the prompts in the current YouTube interface. For the first-time activation timing, see YouTube Help’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Choose how you want to stream

Mobile Quick updates or live video from a phone or tablet Requires at least 50 subscribers, as well as channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days.

Encoder Gameplay, overlays, screen content, or a more involved audio/video setup Use YouTube’s Live Control Room stream settings to get a stream key, then enter it in your encoder.
Console Streaming supported gameplay directly from a game console Follow the instructions for your console model and its YouTube integration.

YouTube outlines these options in its live streaming tips. Expensive equipment is not a prerequisite for starting; choose the method that fits the device and production setup you already have.

  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

Set up an encoder and protect your stream key

  1. Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and create or configure an encoder stream.
  2. In the stream settings, copy the stream key and enter it in the encoder’s YouTube or streaming-platform settings.
  3. Keep the key private. It acts as a credential that lets the encoder send video to your YouTube stream, so anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to that stream.
  4. Start with a test broadcast and confirm that YouTube receives the picture and sound before scheduling an important event.

YouTube explains stream settings and keys in Manage live stream settings.

Run a test before a public broadcast

Test the whole setup before an event that matters: check that the right channel and stream are selected, the audio is audible, and the video appears as expected. YouTube allows you to choose public or unlisted visibility before the stream begins. An unlisted test is useful when you want to check the setup without making the broadcast publicly discoverable.

If live streaming is not available

  • The channel is not verified: complete channel verification while signed in to the account that owns the channel.
  • You recently enabled the feature: wait for the first-time activation window, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours.
  • The channel has a live-streaming restriction: check whether a restriction falls within the preceding 90 days; the channel must meet YouTube’s no-restriction condition.
  • You are trying to stream from a phone with fewer than 50 subscribers: mobile streaming has a separate minimum of 50 subscribers. Consider the webcam or encoder route if it fits your content and setup.
  • An encoder cannot connect: confirm that you copied the stream key for the intended stream and entered it in the encoder. Treat the key as private; if it has been exposed, manage the stream settings in YouTube rather than continuing to share it.
  • You planned to use a webcam but do not have one: webcam streaming requires a webcam, but it is only one option. You can instead use mobile, an encoder, or a supported console where eligible.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than a way to broadcast live camera video. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
