To enable DVR, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, select the stream, go to Stream settings → Additional settings, and turn on Enable DVR. The setting lets viewers pause and rewind while the stream is live, but YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours—so it is not a guarantee of rewind across a continuous 24/7 broadcast.

Turn on DVR in YouTube Live Control Room

  1. In YouTube Studio, click Create → Go live. Enter the stream details or select the scheduled stream you want to manage.
  2. In the Live Control Room’s left menu, choose Stream or Manage, depending on the workflow.
  3. Open Stream settings on the stream dashboard.
  4. Expand Additional settings and turn on Enable DVR.

YouTube documents this setting path, though labels can vary slightly by stream workflow. You do not need a hardware encoder to enable DVR; it is a YouTube Studio setting. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams · YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder

What DVR lets viewers do

With DVR enabled, viewers can pause, rewind, and resume during the live broadcast. When they resume, playback continues from the point where they paused. They cannot seek to a point before the live stream began. YouTube Help

What changes for a 24/7 stream

Rewind may be limited after 12 hours

YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. It does not promise a specific rewind window for a continuous 24/7 broadcast, so do not tell viewers they can rewind the entire broadcast. Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older versions of the YouTube app may have lower rewind limits. YouTube Help

Changing DVR while live does not affect everyone immediately

You can change the DVR setting during a broadcast. YouTube says the change applies to viewers who start playing the stream after you make it; it does not promise an immediate change for people already watching. YouTube Help

DVR is different from the saved replay

DVR controls pausing and rewinding while a stream is live. Archiving controls whether a replay is available after the stream ends. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 channel, do not rely on YouTube’s replay as the only recording; YouTube recommends keeping a local recording backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

Keep the DVR setting separate from encoder and latency choices

An encoder sends a video feed to YouTube; DVR is a separate setting in Studio. For an encoder-based stream, YouTube’s setup flow is to create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder, start sending the feed, check the preview, and then go live. An encoder is useful for producing a feed, but it is not required just to turn on DVR. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder · YouTube Help: Live streaming tips

Latency is another independent choice: it is the delay between capture by the camera or encoder and playback for viewers. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; it does not describe latency as controlling DVR. YouTube Help: Stream latency

Troubleshoot DVR and recording expectations

  • The DVR option is hard to find: Open the stream dashboard’s Stream settings and expand Additional settings. Depending on the workflow, the left-menu entry may be called Stream or Manage.
  • Viewers cannot rewind as far as expected: A 24/7 broadcast is longer than YouTube’s 12-hour threshold, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. App and device versions can impose lower rewind limits as well.
  • A viewer already watching sees no change after you toggle DVR: YouTube specifies the change for viewers who begin playing after the setting is changed; it does not promise an immediate change for current viewers.
  • The replay is missing after a long broadcast: Live DVR does not ensure post-stream archiving. YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, so keep a separate recording if you need a dependable copy.
