To turn on dark mode, open your desktop’s appearance or color settings and choose the dark option. The exact path depends on the operating system or Linux desktop environment:

  • Windows 10/11: Settings → Personalization → Colors → Choose your mode → Dark.
  • macOS: System Settings → Appearance → Dark (or Auto).
  • GNOME: Activities → search for Appearance → Dark.
  • KDE Plasma: System Settings → Global Theme → a dark theme such as Breeze Dark.

Use the section for your platform. Linux distributions can use other desktop environments, so GNOME and KDE instructions do not cover every Linux desktop.

Choose the instructions for your desktop

Desktop Dark-mode control Important behavior
Windows 10 or 11 Settings → Personalization → Colors Dark or Custom mode; individual apps may override Windows.
macOS System Settings → Appearance Dark stays on; Auto changes according to the Night Shift schedule.
GNOME Appearance → Dark Global preference introduced in GNOME 42; apps can provide their own style controls.
KDE Plasma System Settings → Global Theme Choose a dark global theme; applying a desktop layout is optional.

Turn on dark mode in Windows 10 or Windows 11

  1. Open Settings. You can select it from the Start menu or press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Personalization, then Colors.
  3. Find Choose your mode and select Dark.

Windows immediately changes supported system surfaces, including many built-in windows and controls. If you want separate choices for Windows itself and applications, select Custom instead. Custom mode lets you choose a light or dark Windows mode and a different default app mode.

If one Windows application remains light

Microsoft notes that applications can have their own appearance preference and that not every application supports dark mode. Open the light application’s settings and look for labels such as Appearance, Theme, Color scheme or Use system setting. Choose its dark or system option when available. A browser, office program or development tool may ignore the Windows setting until you change this separate control.

Windows checks after changing the setting

  • Open a few built-in windows, such as File Explorer and Settings, to confirm the system theme changed.
  • Check the taskbar and Start menu; accent-color settings are separate from dark mode.
  • If the switch is unavailable, install pending Windows updates and reopen Settings. The wording can differ slightly between Windows releases.

Turn on dark mode in macOS

  1. Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
  2. Select Appearance.
  3. Choose Dark.

Dark keeps the dark appearance enabled until you change it. Choose Auto if you want macOS to change appearance according to the Night Shift schedule documented by Apple. Auto is not an instant sunrise/sunset switch: Apple’s guide says the Mac waits until it has been idle for at least one minute before changing.

Use the quick Control Center switch

  1. Select Control Center in the menu bar.
  2. Open the disclosure control next to Display.
  3. Select Dark Mode.

This is a quick way to switch appearance without opening System Settings. The same Dark and Auto behavior still applies.

If a Mac app does not change

Some applications expose an independent theme menu. Open the app’s preferences and inspect its appearance setting. Select a dark theme or an option such as Use system setting if offered. An app that has no dark theme remains light even while macOS is set to Dark.

Turn on dark mode in GNOME

  1. Open the Activities overview.
  2. Type Appearance in the search field.
  3. Open Appearance and select Dark.

GNOME applies the choice immediately. GNOME’s global dark user-interface preference arrived in GNOME 42 and is followed by most GNOME applications.

Why GNOME can look partly light

GNOME applications can provide their own style controls, and an app-specific choice can override the global preference. Look in that application’s preferences for a style or theme selector. The exact options shown depend on your Linux distribution and GNOME version, so labels may not match the example exactly.

Confirm your GNOME version and distribution behavior

Open your distribution’s system information panel to identify the GNOME version. If the Appearance panel does not show a Dark choice, your distribution may use an older GNOME release or a customized settings panel. In that case, use the distribution’s documented theme controls rather than installing random theme extensions.

Turn on dark mode in KDE Plasma

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Select Global Theme.
  3. Choose a dark theme, such as Breeze Dark, and apply it.

KDE’s global-theme workflow can change several appearance categories at once. The apply dialog may also offer to change desktop and window layout. If your goal is only a darker appearance, keep the selection limited to appearance settings and leave layout changes unchecked unless you specifically want the new arrangement.

When only some KDE elements change

KDE separates global theme components, including colors, window decorations, icons and applications style. Review the components shown in the Global Theme dialog and apply the ones you want. Individual applications can still have their own theme controls, and non-KDE applications may follow a toolkit or application-specific setting instead.

Dark mode versus automatic or custom choices

Windows: Dark versus Custom

Choose Dark when you want Windows and supported apps to follow one dark preference. Choose Custom when, for example, you prefer dark taskbar and system controls but want a light document editor. Custom mode exposes separate Windows-mode and app-mode choices.

macOS: Dark versus Auto

Dark is a fixed choice. Auto follows the schedule used by Night Shift and changes after the Mac has been idle for at least one minute. Auto is useful when you want a lighter daytime interface without manually switching twice a day.

GNOME and KDE: global themes with local exceptions

GNOME’s Dark choice is a global style preference, while KDE’s dark appearance is normally selected as a Global Theme. Both allow application-level differences. Treat the system setting as a default, not a guarantee that every program will use the same colors.

Troubleshoot a desktop that still looks light

The setting changed, but one application did not

Open that application’s preferences and select its dark theme or system-following option. Some applications do not support dark mode at all; no operating-system setting can force an unsupported theme.

Only menus changed, not web pages

A desktop dark theme does not automatically recolor every website. Websites choose their own design and may offer a separate theme switch. Browser extensions or browser-level preferences can affect websites, but configure those separately from the desktop steps above.

Text or controls are hard to read

Switch back temporarily to the light theme and check the application’s contrast or accessibility settings. In KDE, review which Global Theme components were applied; a mixed set of colors and window decorations can produce poor contrast.

The option is missing on Linux

Identify whether the session is GNOME, KDE Plasma or another environment. The instructions here are verified for GNOME and KDE; Cinnamon, Xfce, MATE, LXQt and vendor-customized desktops use different controls. Do not assume a missing GNOME or KDE option indicates a hardware problem.

A scheduled macOS change did not happen immediately

If macOS is set to Auto, allow the Mac to remain idle for at least one minute. Auto follows the Night Shift schedule rather than switching the instant you select it. To change immediately, select Dark from Appearance or use Control Center.

Applying a KDE theme changed the desktop layout

Reopen System Settings → Global Theme and apply a theme while clearing the option to change desktop and window layout. KDE treats layout as a separate choice, so it does not need to be applied just to obtain dark colors.

Documenting how a site looks in dark mode without browser setup

If you need a clean reference image of a web page while checking a dark design, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF through one request. It is separate from your desktop’s appearance setting: it captures the requested URL for documentation or testing.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan.
