Safari gets its dark appearance from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Turn on the device’s Dark Mode, return to Safari, and reload the page. Websites that publish dark-mode styles will switch; sites without them stay light. For those sites, a Safari web extension such as Dark Reader for Safari is the practical fallback.
Enable Dark Mode before changing Safari
Safari does not have a separate, universal “make every website dark” switch. It reports your device’s appearance preference to each site. A site can then apply CSS designed for dark mode. Start with the built-in setting because it requires no extension, has no webpage permissions, and also darkens the rest of the operating-system interface.

After changing the appearance, go back to Safari and reload the page. Reloading gives the site another opportunity to evaluate the prefers-color-scheme preference and load its dark stylesheet.
Turn on dark websites on iPhone and iPad
Use Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Appearance.
- Select Dark.
- Open Safari and reload the website.
Apple’s current iPhone and iPad instructions use Settings > Appearance. On iOS 26 and earlier, Apple documents the equivalent controls under Settings > Display & Brightness; choose Dark there. The label therefore depends on the operating-system release installed on your device.
#1 Best Overall
- Built-in Wireless with Easy Setup
- Mobile Device Printing: Easily print from your iPhone, iPad, Android or tablet
- Powerful Printing options: Air print, Google Cloud Print, Mopria, Canon PRINT app and more
- Remarkable print quality with deeper blacks and vivid reds
- Print Instagram and Facebook photos directly from smartphone or tablets
Use Control Center
- Open Control Center.
- Touch and hold the brightness bar.
- Tap Dark Mode.
- Return to Safari and reload the page.
Schedule dark mode automatically
- Open Settings > Appearance (or Settings > Display & Brightness on iOS 26 and earlier).
- Choose Automatic.
- Open Options and select the schedule you want.
Automatic mode changes the device appearance according to that schedule. Safari follows the resulting system preference; it does not maintain a separate schedule.
Turn on dark websites on a Mac
Use System Settings
- Open System Settings.
- Click Appearance.
- Choose Dark for an always-dark interface, or Auto to switch automatically.
- Return to Safari and reload the website.
Apple describes Dark appearance as changing the colour scheme of the system and content, including webpages that provide matching styles.
Use Control Center
- Open Control Center from the menu bar.
- Open the Display section.
- Toggle Dark Mode.
- Reload the Safari tab.
What Safari can and cannot darken
The built-in setting changes the preference exposed to websites; it does not repaint arbitrary pixels. WebKit added dark-mode support in Safari 12.1 with macOS 10.14.4, and in iOS and iPadOS 13. A modern site still has to implement the corresponding dark CSS. If its developers supplied only a light design, Safari has nothing native to apply.
| Approach | Platform | What it affects | Persistence | Access and privacy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| System Dark | iPhone, iPad, Mac | System controls and websites that support dark styles | Until you change it | Built in; no extension access |
| Automatic appearance | iPhone, iPad, Mac | The same supported websites, according to the system schedule | Follows the selected schedule | Built in; no extension access |
| Safari Reader | Safari for Mac (on eligible article pages) | A simplified reading view, not a guaranteed recolour of the original page | Per-site Reader setting | Built in; no extension access |
| Dark-mode web extension | iPhone, iPad, Mac | Pages the extension can restyle, including sites that ignore the system preference | Until disabled or its rules change | Can request webpage and URL access; review Safari’s permission prompt |
Why a website remains white
The site has no dark stylesheet
This is the most common explanation. Your device and Safari can be in Dark Mode while the page remains light because the site does not respond to prefers-color-scheme: dark. There is no Safari setting that forces every site to provide a missing design.

The page was already loaded
Reload the tab after changing appearance. For a stubborn tab, close it and open the address again. A reload cannot add dark CSS to a site that never supplied it, but it resolves pages that read the preference only during navigation.
The page mixes dark and light components
Some sites theme their main layout but leave embedded forms, advertising frames, images, or third-party widgets unchanged. That is an implementation boundary, not evidence that the system toggle failed. An extension may restyle more of the page, although embedded content can still behave differently.
Use Safari Reader when you only need an article
On Mac, open the Page menu beside the Smart Search field and choose Website Settings. Turn on Reader when available for an article site. Reader strips navigation and other distractions and can make long text easier to read. Apple does not describe Reader as a dark-mode switch, so do not expect it to recolour every page or every element.
Install an extension for sites that ignore Dark Mode
iPhone and iPad
- Install a Safari web extension from the App Store, such as Dark Reader for Safari, which Apple lists as dark mode for every website.
- In Safari, open the More menu and choose Extensions, or open Settings > Safari > Extensions.
- Enable the extension and grant only the website access you understand.
- Reload the page and use the extension’s controls to adjust or disable its styling for that site.
Mac
- Install the extension.
- In Safari, choose Safari > Settings > Extensions.
- Select the extension and enable it.
- Reload the affected tab.
Extensions can request access to webpage contents and URLs. Safari shows those permissions when you enable one; read them before approving access. The permission prompt describes what the extension can reach, but it does not establish the privacy practices of a particular vendor.

Choosing the right method
- Choose system Dark when you want a no-install solution and the websites you use already support dark styles.
- Choose Automatic when you want Safari and the rest of the device to follow a day-and-night schedule.
- Choose Reader when your goal is a cleaner article view rather than a dark version of an entire interactive site.
- Choose an extension when specific sites remain light and you accept the extension’s requested webpage and URL permissions.
The trade-off is scope versus control: the built-in setting is the most private and reliable, while an extension can affect more sites but requires additional access and may need per-site adjustments.
Troubleshooting Safari dark mode
Safari is dark but the webpage is still white
Confirm that the device is actually set to Dark, reload the tab, and test another site. If other supported sites turn dark, the original site probably lacks dark CSS. Install and enable a web extension if you need that site restyled.
Only part of the page changed
Reload first. If the problem persists, the site may theme its own content but not third-party frames or images. Try the extension’s per-site settings rather than changing the system appearance again.
The extension is installed but does nothing
Check Settings > Safari > Extensions on iPhone or iPad, or Safari > Settings > Extensions on Mac. Make sure it is enabled and allowed on the current website, then reload the tab. If Safari asks for access each time, review the site-access choice instead of granting unrestricted access automatically.

Apple’s labels vary by operating-system release. On iPhone and iPad, look for Appearance; on iOS 26 and earlier, look under Display & Brightness. On Mac, the control is in System Settings > Appearance. Control Center provides an alternative path on both platforms.
Automatic mode changes at the wrong time
Open the Appearance settings, keep Automatic selected, and review Options for the schedule. The schedule changes the device preference; individual sites can still remain light if they do not support dark styles.

If your goal is an automated screenshot rather than changing the Safari interface, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its dark-mode option can be used in capture workflows, while the built-in Safari steps above remain the way to change your own browser.
One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The service accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Safari’s Dark Mode change a website’s content or only its appearance?
It changes the colour presentation supplied by the website; it does not translate text, replace images, or redesign a site that has no dark stylesheet.
Can I keep the Mac interface dark while allowing automatic website changes?
Yes. Select Dark for a permanently dark Mac, or Auto when you want the operating system—and compatible Safari sites—to follow a schedule.
