Edge’s Settings & more > Settings > Appearance > Overall appearance > Dark setting darkens the browser interface, not necessarily the pages you visit. To force webpage content into a dark rendering, open edge://flags/#enable-force-dark, configure Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents, and relaunch Edge. If that experimental transformation makes a site unreadable, use Dark Reader for per-site exclusions and visual controls.
What “dark mode for all websites” means in Edge
There are two different layers of dark mode:
- Browser chrome: tabs, menus, settings, the address bar and other Edge interface elements.
- Web content: the HTML, CSS, images, forms and controls rendered inside each site.
Edge’s normal Dark appearance option controls the first layer. A site can still show a white page because the site owns its page colors. The Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents flag targets the second layer by applying a browser-level dark rendering treatment to visited pages. A dedicated extension such as Dark Reader adds more tuning and site-by-site control.
Option 1: Make Edge’s interface dark
Use this when you want dark tabs and menus, or when you prefer to let each website decide whether it supports a native dark theme.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select the three-dot Settings and more button.
- Choose Settings.
- Select Appearance in the settings sidebar.
- Under Overall appearance, select Dark.
Microsoft describes this theme as changing Edge’s default bright background to a darker color. It does not promise that the current website’s own background, text or controls will change.

Option 2: Force dark rendering on webpages with Edge Flags
The built-in control aimed at website content is an experimental flag. It applies a dark rendering transformation globally, so it can affect sites that do not provide their own dark theme.
- Copy
edge://flags/#enable-force-darkinto Edge’s address bar and press Enter. - Find Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents. The page should jump directly to the setting.
- Open the setting’s drop-down menu and choose the available dark-mode option that gives the best result for the pages you use.
- Select Restart or Relaunch when Edge prompts you. The change is applied after the browser restarts.
What the flag changes
The flag asks Edge to transform webpage colors at the browser level. It is not the same as a website’s native dark theme: a site may have no dark color palette for its logo, diagrams, photographs, embedded documents or form widgets, so those elements can remain bright or acquire an unexpected tint.
How to undo it safely
If text becomes low-contrast, icons disappear, images look inverted or controls stop matching their backgrounds, return to edge://flags/#enable-force-dark, set Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents back to Default, and select Restart/Relaunch again. Because this is an experimental flag, rendering quality can vary between Edge builds and between sites.
Option 3: Use Dark Reader when you need site-level control
Dark Reader is available from Microsoft Edge Add-ons. Its listing describes an extension that creates dark themes on the fly, inverts bright colors and exposes controls for brightness, contrast, sepia, fonts and individual websites.

- Open Microsoft Edge Add-ons and search for Dark Reader.
- Install the extension from its listing, then follow Edge’s confirmation prompts.
- Open the Dark Reader toolbar panel on a website.
- Adjust the mode and visual controls until the page is readable.
- Use the extension’s per-site enable/disable control to exclude pages that already have a good native dark theme or that do not render correctly.
This approach requires maintaining an extension, but it gives you a practical escape hatch when the global flag damages a particular design. Marketplace versions and compatibility can change, so check the current listing if a control or behavior differs from these steps.
Which Edge dark-mode approach should you choose?

A sensible progression is to set the interface theme first, test the built-in content flag on the pages you actually read, and switch to Dark Reader if you need exceptions or finer visual tuning. You do not have to use all three at once; stacking a flag and an extension can make troubleshooting harder.
Check the result on more than one kind of page
After changing a global setting, test a small set of pages before relying on it:
- A text-heavy article with links and headings.
- A page with photographs or illustrations.
- A form containing text fields, menus and buttons.
- A page with code blocks, charts or diagrams.
- A site that already advertises its own native dark theme.
Look for readable body text, visible focus states, distinguishable visited links, usable form borders and icons that still communicate their meaning. A setting that looks excellent on an article can fail on a dashboard or checkout page because those interfaces use carefully coordinated colors.

Troubleshooting common Edge dark-mode problems
Edge is dark, but every website is still white
You changed the browser interface theme, not webpage rendering. Open edge://flags/#enable-force-dark and configure Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents, or install Dark Reader if you need per-site controls.
The Auto Dark Mode setting is missing
Flags are experimental and can be renamed, moved or removed in a later Edge build. Confirm that the address is exactly edge://flags/#enable-force-dark. If the setting is not present in your current build, use the extension route instead and recheck the flag after a future Edge update.
A page became unreadable after relaunch
Return to the flag, choose Default, relaunch Edge and test again. If you still want dark pages, use Dark Reader and adjust brightness or contrast, then exclude the affected site.
Images, logos or diagrams look wrong
Force-dark rendering changes colors without knowing the designer’s intent. Keep the flag disabled for that site, or use an extension’s site exclusion. Photos and brand graphics may need their original colors to remain legible.

Buttons or form controls have poor contrast
Check the page in its original theme first. If the native version is usable, set the force-dark flag back to Default and use a site-specific extension setting only where needed. Do not judge accessibility from the page background alone; keyboard focus, disabled states and error messages also need visible contrast.
The extension works on one site but not another
Open the extension panel while viewing the affected site and confirm that Dark Reader is enabled for that domain. Try its brightness, contrast or sepia controls, and keep a per-site exclusion for pages that already implement a good dark theme. Extension interfaces and compatibility can change with new Edge releases.

Expect changes to experimental flags
Microsoft’s WebView2 feedback record describes the force-dark setting as a global rendering treatment that requires a restart. It is experimental, so the available modes and the way individual pages look are not permanent promises. If an Edge update changes the result, revisit the flag and choose a different available mode or return to Default.
Keep a rollback path
Remember the exact reset: edge://flags/#enable-force-dark > Default > Restart/Relaunch. If you cannot read a page well enough to navigate, open a new tab and reset the flag before continuing. For a less global setup, leave the flag at its default and let Dark Reader handle only selected sites.

Do not confuse a dark screenshot with a dark browser
A screenshot tool can render a page in dark mode for an image or PDF, while your local Edge window remains unchanged. Conversely, changing Edge’s theme does not automatically make a separately generated screenshot dark. Treat browser viewing and automated capture as separate jobs.
