Automatic DLC downloads are controlled by your console or game launcher, not by a cable, drive, or other accessory. Turn on the platform’s update setting, keep the device connected in the required power state, and verify that the account owns the add-on. On PlayStation, background downloads require an internet connection in Rest Mode; Nintendo Switch uses a global automatic-update switch; Steam combines per-game rules with a global download schedule; and Epic Games Launcher exposes an Auto Update toggle for each game.
The important distinction is that an update setting controls delivery, not ownership. A purchased expansion, season pass, or cosmetic pack must be attached to the signed-in account, and some games still require an in-game activation or content-selection step after the files arrive. The procedures below separate downloading, installing, account entitlement, and storage so you can identify the actual failure point.
How automatic DLC updating actually works
Three separate conditions must line up before an add-on appears in a game:
- Automation is enabled. The console or launcher must be allowed to download software without waiting for you to start the game.
- The device can perform background work. PlayStation consoles need an internet connection while in Rest Mode. A PC launcher must be running, or the computer must remain available during its scheduled download window.
- Your account has the entitlement. Automatic updating can download content you own; it cannot purchase or unlock DLC. The add-on may also need to be selected in the game’s own content-management screen.
A game patch and a DLC package are related but not identical. A patch updates the base game’s files. DLC is a separately listed storefront item tied to an account. You can have automatic patching enabled and still need to claim, purchase, install, or activate an add-on separately.

There can also be a timing delay. A remote purchase may first need to synchronize with the console or client, then enter a download queue, then install. A title that is suspended, a launcher outside its permitted schedule, or a full drive can make an owned add-on look unavailable even though the account is correct. Check each stage rather than repeatedly changing network hardware.
Enable automatic downloads on PlayStation 5
PS5 separates downloading from installing in Rest Mode, so choose the behavior that matches how you use the console.
Turn on automatic downloading
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Auto-Download.
With Auto-Download enabled, the console can fetch an available game or application update without waiting for you to open that title. DLC delivered as a downloadable package can be included when the store entitlement and game support it.

It fetches the files but does not necessarily close a suspended game to complete installation. If the add-on is urgent, open the title after the download and allow its pending installation to finish.
Allow installation during Rest Mode
- Stay in Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Auto-Install in Rest Mode if you want downloaded updates installed while the console is resting.
Auto-Install can require the game not to be suspended. If you want the PS5 to download files but do not want a suspended game closed, leave Auto-Download on and Auto-Install off. You can install the pending update after returning to the console.
This distinction matters for large expansions: a download may be complete while the game still reports an installation step. Do not delete and redownload immediately; first check the game’s update status and content-management screen.
Keep the PS5 connected while resting
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s support instruction is explicit: “To download games while in rest mode, set your console to stay connected to the internet.” If this option is disabled, the PS5 cannot perform the background network work that automatic downloads require.

The console must be left in a state that permits network activity. If you use a power strip that cuts electricity, downloads will wait until the PS5 is powered and connected again.
Check immediately instead of waiting
Launching a game or app checks for its newest available version. You can also highlight the title, open its options menu, and choose the manual update check. This is useful after buying an add-on online or after changing the automatic-update settings.
A manual check is also a quick diagnostic. If the console finds an update, automation or the Rest Mode connection was the likely issue. If it finds nothing, check ownership and the game’s add-on list rather than assuming the network failed.

Use remote purchases
Once automatic downloads and updates are enabled, PlayStation says remote downloads are available when you purchase content through the PlayStation Store online or in the PlayStation App. The console still needs to be powered in a state that permits downloads and connected to the internet.

Buy the DLC with the same PlayStation account used on the console, then allow time for the entitlement to synchronize. If another profile owns the base game, that profile may not be able to use the add-on.
Enable automatic downloads on PlayStation 4
PS4 uses a different menu path from PS5.
- Open Settings > System > Automatic Downloads.
- Enable Application Update Files.
- Open Settings > Power Saving Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
The Application Update Files option covers automatic game and application updates. DLC entitlement remains separate: confirm that the add-on was purchased on the same account, then check the game’s downloadable-content or content-management screen after the download completes.
PS4 owners sometimes follow the PS5 path and conclude that the option is missing. Use the System menu above; the labels are not interchangeable. Leave the console in Rest Mode with its internet feature enabled if you expect downloads while you are away.
Enable automatic software updates on Nintendo Switch
Switch uses one global control for installed software rather than a per-game auto-update menu.
- Connect the Switch to the internet.
- From HOME, open System Settings.
- Scroll to System.
- Enable Automatic Software Updates.
Nintendo says updates to installed software download automatically while the console is connected. The console must therefore have a usable internet connection when the update is released and when it checks for the file.
The global setting applies to installed software, so it is not a switch for granting DLC ownership. If an expansion is sold separately, verify the Nintendo Account that completed the purchase and look for the add-on through the game or storefront. A title can be current while an unowned add-on remains absent.
Run a manual update check
- Highlight the game on the HOME menu.
- Press + or −.
- Choose Software Update.
- Select Via the Internet.
If an add-on does not appear, this check can pull the latest software metadata, but it will not add content that belongs to a different account or has not been purchased. Use the result to distinguish an available update from an entitlement problem.
Enable automatic updates for a game in Steam
Steam provides a rule for each game and a separate global download scheduler. The client automatically places games in the download queue when an update releases.
Choose the update rule for one game
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game, or select it and open its management menu.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Updates section.
- Select one of Steam’s documented behaviors:
- Always keep this game updated downloads updates as Steam makes them available.
- Only update this game when I launch it waits until you start the game.
- High Priority – Always auto-update this game before others moves that title ahead of other pending updates.
The first choice is the closest match to hands-off DLC and patch downloading. The second deliberately postpones updates, so it can make a newly purchased add-on appear to be missing until the game is launched. High Priority is useful when one title must be ready first, but it can delay updates for every other game in the queue.

Set Steam’s global download behavior
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Enable Steam’s automatic game-update behavior.
- Review the download schedule window and adjust it so the computer is normally available during that period.
- Set a bandwidth limit if updates must share a connection with other work.
Use Steam’s Download Manager to watch progress, pause or resume work, and reorder queued updates. A large DLC package may remain queued because of the schedule, a bandwidth cap, another high-priority download, or insufficient disk space.
For truly unattended downloads, Steam must be available during the permitted window. A sleeping, powered-off, or disconnected PC cannot complete work that the client has not been able to start. When you return, open Download Manager first; it shows whether the package is waiting, paused, downloading, or ready to install.
What Steam can and cannot do automatically
Steam can download an update for a title whose update rule permits it. It cannot grant ownership of a DLC item. Find additional downloadable content on the base game’s store page or by searching for the add-on, then open the game from the Steam Library to confirm its installation and launch state.
If the DLC is listed as owned but not installed, inspect the game’s properties and installed-content view, then restart Steam if the entitlement was purchased recently. If the item is not owned on the account shown in Steam, changing the update rule will not make it appear.
Enable automatic updates in Epic Games Launcher
Epic Games Launcher exposes Auto Update per game.
- Open the launcher and select Library.
- Find the game and select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Manage.
- Turn on Auto Update. Epic says the switch turns blue when enabled.
Repeat these steps for each title that should update automatically. Keep the launcher and computer available for downloads; if the client cannot run, the update will wait until the launcher is available again.
After enabling the switch, revisit the same Manage panel if a title remains outdated. A blue control confirms the per-game setting, while the library entry and download activity show whether the package is actually moving. Auto Update still cannot purchase an expansion or correct an account mismatch.
What to do when DLC is missing after automatic updates are enabled
Work through the checks in order. They separate an automation problem from an account, storefront, or game-activation problem.

Check that the console or PC client is signed in to the account that bought or redeemed the add-on. A second profile on the same device may be able to play the base game but not own the DLC entitlement.
Also confirm that the purchase completed rather than remaining in a pending state. The platform must record ownership before an automatic client can queue the files.
2. Verify the add-on in the storefront
Open the base game’s store page or search for the specific DLC. On Steam, Valve’s support guidance directs users to find additional downloadable content from the base-game store page or by searching, then access it from the Steam Library. If the item is not shown as owned, automatic downloading has nothing to install.

Store listings can contain multiple editions or bundles. Match the exact add-on to the base game and account, rather than assuming that owning a deluxe edition on another platform transfers automatically.
3. Check the platform’s content-management view
Look for an installed-content, downloadable-content, or add-on list for the game. Make sure the DLC is selected for installation where the platform provides that control. Some games also require an in-game download or activation step after the platform finishes installing files.
Close the game while checking. A running or suspended title may postpone installation, particularly when PS5 Auto-Install in Rest Mode is enabled. After installation, launch the game once so it can register the new content and display any activation prompt.
4. Restart the client or console
Close and reopen the launcher, or restart the console. This forces a fresh account and storefront check and can make a newly granted entitlement visible.
5. Run a manual update check
On PS5, use the game’s options menu; on Switch, use + or − followed by Software Update > Via the Internet; on Steam, open the game’s Properties > Updates page and inspect the Download Manager; on Epic, revisit Library > three-dot menu > Manage and confirm that Auto Update is blue.

6. Check free storage and the queue
DLC can be large. Confirm that the console or PC has enough free disk space, then inspect Steam’s Download Manager or the launcher’s queue for a paused, scheduled, bandwidth-limited, or lower-priority transfer. Automatic settings do not override a full drive or a deliberate download limit.
Keep room for both the downloaded package and the installed files. If storage is nearly full, remove only content you can restore and then retry the update; do not treat an SSD as an automation switch. An SSD can provide more capacity or faster local operations, and Ethernet can improve connection reliability, but neither enables automatic updating by itself.
7. Start the game once
If the platform shows the add-on as installed but the game does not, launch the title so it can register the new files. Follow any content-management prompt the game displays. Do not assume that a completed platform download means every game mode or item is immediately enabled.

Plan for storage, bandwidth, and interruptions
Automatic updating is convenient, but it still consumes disk space and network capacity. Before enabling every title, decide whether you want all updates immediately or only the games you play regularly.

- Keep enough free storage for the temporary download and the installed files. A nearly full drive can leave a download queued or make installation fail.
- On Steam, use the schedule window and bandwidth limit to prevent updates from competing with work or other household traffic.
- On PS5, choose Auto-Download without Auto-Install if closing a suspended game would disrupt your session.
- Leave consoles connected to the internet in the required Rest Mode setting; a fully disconnected or powered-off state cannot perform the documented background download task.
- After buying DLC remotely, allow time for the console or launcher to check the account and storefront before concluding that the add-on is absent.
Interruptions do not necessarily mean the purchase failed. A queue can resume after a connection returns, a scheduled window opens, or another download completes. Check the status shown by the platform before starting a second purchase or deleting the base game.
What about Xbox?
Xbox menu names and background-update behavior can change with system updates. This guide does not provide an exact Xbox path. Use the current Microsoft support instructions for your console model and system version, then apply the same diagnostic order: enable automatic updates, keep the console online in its permitted standby mode, verify the purchasing account, and inspect the game’s add-on list.
