On the base PlayStation 5, Sony’s announced AI upscaling feature is Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). It is added as a graphics option inside supported games—not as a single console-wide switch. Update a supported game, launch it, and look for QSSR in its graphics options. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games receiving support in its October 1, 2026 announcement.

What QSSR does—and how it differs from PSSR

Sony describes QSSR as an AI-upscaling technology derived from Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture, with an implementation hand-tuned for the PS5. The company positions it as a performance-oriented tier below PSSR, the technology Sony associates with PS5 Pro, and says QSSR improves image detail and stability on the base PS5. Those are Sony’s claims, not independent test results. Sony’s announcement does not quantify resolution, frame-rate, latency, or image-quality changes for either launch title.

QSSR is not a PS5 Pro system toggle to enable on a base console. Sony says supported games add it as an in-game graphics option. As a result, availability depends on the game and its current version.

Games with announced QSSR support

In its October 1, 2026 announcement, Sony named two initial titles and said patches were being released to add QSSR as an additional graphics option:

Sony also said QSSR would be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but did not name other supported games or give a schedule. Check a game’s current graphics menu rather than assuming it supports QSSR.

How to enable QSSR on a base PS5

  1. Check for a game update. On the PS5 home screen, highlight the supported game, press the controller’s Options button, and select Check for Update. Install any update offered. See PlayStation’s instructions for checking game updates.
  2. Check the console software if needed. Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. The screen shows the current system software version and whether an update is available. Sony’s system software update guide explains this check.
  3. Open the updated game’s graphics options. Launch the game and look for QSSR among its graphics choices. Sony confirms that the patches add QSSR as an additional graphics option, but its announcement does not specify the exact submenu path or the precise label each game uses. The location can therefore vary by game or version.
  4. Select QSSR if it appears. If you do not see the option, confirm that the game is one of the named supported titles and that its update installed. Sony’s announcement establishes support for those initial games; it does not describe a universal PS5 setting that enables QSSR in every game.

What to expect when choosing a graphics option

QSSR is one choice in a supported game’s graphics options, so compare it with that game’s other available settings and choose the presentation you prefer. Sony’s announcement does not provide measured QSSR performance comparisons, or resolution, frame-rate, latency, or image-quality figures for either title. There is not enough published information in that announcement to rank the two games’ implementations or promise a specific visual or performance gain.
