Put the PNG inside an HTML <a> element on a web page, use your publishing app’s image-link control, or distribute the destination beside the file. If the image must carry a scannable destination on its own, add a QR code to the artwork.
Why a PNG is not a clickable link by itself
A PNG stores pixels and can also store descriptive text metadata, but the file format does not define a universal action that opens a URL when someone clicks the image. The PNG specification lists the tEXt, iTXt and zTXt chunks for text associated with an image, such as a description or copyright notice; it does not define those chunks as hyperlink commands. See the PNG Specification (Second Edition).
That distinction matters because an image may be viewed in a browser, an email client, a document editor, a chat app, an operating-system previewer or an image editor. Each host application decides whether it recognizes metadata, and none is required to turn PNG text into a click action. A URL typed into a metadata field is therefore information, not a portable link.
The method that works on a web page
HTML supplies the link context that PNG lacks. Put the image inside an anchor and place the destination in the anchor’s href:

</a>The anchor is the clickable object; the PNG is its content. This is the standard image-embedding pattern documented by MDN’s <img> reference and the HTML Standard’s image section.
Make the whole image one link
Use one anchor when every part of the artwork should lead to the same destination. Keep the alt text focused on the link’s purpose, such as “Read the installation guide,” rather than a long inventory of colors or shapes. When an image is a link, useful alternative text can also function as the link’s anchor text. Google’s image SEO guidance recommends descriptive, non-spammy alternatives.
Open a new tab only when it helps
You can add target='_blank' when a separate tab is genuinely useful. For an external destination, pair it with rel='noopener'. Otherwise, let the browser open the link in the current tab so keyboard and mobile users get the least surprising behavior.

Application controls vary by product and version, so look for a command named Insert link, Link image or a chain-link button after selecting the image. The resulting behavior belongs to that host application, not to PNG itself.

Adding different links to different parts of one image
An ordinary anchor gives one click target. For a diagram, floor plan or banner with several destinations, keep the image on the page and define regions in page markup with an HTML image map. Each region points to its own URL. The map still exists only in the HTML document; downloading the PNG does not preserve those regions.

</map>For responsive layouts, separate linked image pieces or regular HTML elements are often easier to maintain than fixed pixel coordinates. Whatever technique you choose, provide a meaningful alternative path for people who do not use a pointer or who receive only the PNG file.
What to do when the image leaves the page
Send the URL as text
A plain URL in the message, caption or document is the most dependable fallback. It remains available when the recipient saves the image, prints it or opens it in software that ignores HTML context.

Use a QR code for physical or standalone artwork
A QR code turns the destination into scannable pixels. It is not a hyperlink embedded in PNG behavior: a camera or QR reader must decode it. Print a short human-readable URL as well, check the code at its final size, and keep sufficient contrast and quiet space around it.
Do not rely on metadata for user actions
Title, author, description, copyright and comment fields are useful for cataloging and accessibility workflows when software supports them. They are not a substitute for an anchor, a platform link control or a visible URL.
Accessibility and maintainability checklist
- Write
alttext that explains where the link goes or what action it performs. - Do not duplicate a nearby text link with an uninformative image link; combine the image and text in one clear target when appropriate.
- Ensure keyboard users can reach and activate the anchor, and make the focus indicator visible in your site’s CSS.
- Keep the destination in HTML or the publishing platform’s link field so it can be changed without recreating the artwork.
- Provide a visible URL or QR code when recipients may download the PNG outside its original page.
- Use separate linked pieces or an image map only when distinct regions are genuinely needed; test each region at mobile widths.
Testing before you publish
- Open the page in a browser and activate the image with a mouse, keyboard and touch input.
- Confirm the browser’s status preview shows the intended destination before activation.
- Save or copy the PNG alone and open it in an image viewer. Its lack of click behavior is expected; verify that your surrounding message still contains the fallback URL.
- If you use an image map, test every region, including edges and overlapping shapes, at each responsive layout.
- Check the alternative text with an accessibility inspection tool or screen reader and make sure it describes the destination rather than repeating a filename.
- Scan any QR code from the printed or displayed size and verify that it opens the intended HTTPS address.
Common problems and fixes
The image displays but clicking does nothing
Inspect the page source or editor settings. The image may not be inside an anchor, or the editor may have stripped the link during paste or upload. Reinsert the link using the editor’s image-link command and test the published page, not only the editing canvas.

A URL appears in PNG properties but is not clickable
That is normal. Metadata is associated text, not a standard action. Add an HTML anchor, use the host application’s link control, or provide the URL beside the file.
The link works on a desktop page but not in an email or social post
Those products sanitize or restrict markup differently. Use the product’s documented image-link feature when available and include a visible URL in the message or caption. Do not assume that HTML copied from your website will survive unchanged.

Replace the single wrapped image with an image map or separate linked elements. Make each target large enough for touch input and give each region its own alternative text.

The QR code scans unreliably
Increase its displayed size and contrast, preserve clear space around it, and avoid placing it over a busy background. Keep a typed URL nearby so the destination is still usable when scanning fails.

Bottom line
Keep the responsibilities separate: HTML, a publishing platform or an email editor supplies the clickable URL; PNG supplies the visual pixels. For a standalone file, include the URL or a QR code. Metadata can describe an image, but it cannot provide a reliable, portable click action.
