Join Google Play Points before making a purchase: Google does not award points retroactively. After joining, you can earn on eligible Google Play purchases and on qualifying offers shown in your account. Installing a free app does not automatically earn points; download rewards are limited to specific promotions with their own rules.
Join before you spend
On Android, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, select Play Points, then tap Join. On a computer, open the Play Store, select Play Points, then choose Join. See Google’s enrollment requirements for availability in your country.

Google requires an eligible country, a supported Android device or computer, an account that is not managed by a school or parent, a valid payment method, and a billing address that matches the Google Play country. If Google’s systems determine that you may be under 18, you must be at least 18 to join. Requirements and availability can vary by country.
Points attach to the enrolled Google Account. Purchases made before enrollment do not qualify: Google Play Help states, “You won’t get points for purchases you made before you joined Google Play Points.”

Which purchases can earn points?
Google’s US guidance lists purchases of apps and games, in-app or in-game items, subscriptions, and Play books. Google’s earn-and-track help also describes points for subscribing to Google One from Android in the applicable context. The eligible categories are not universal: Google says available content, rates, levels, and multipliers vary by country. Check your local Play Points terms before assuming a purchase qualifies.
For a qualifying purchase, Google calculates points using the item price and your level’s rate, excluding tax, then rounds the result to a whole point. Some regions have a minimum qualifying amount, so a purchase below the local threshold may earn zero. The figures below are examples from Google’s US guidance, not worldwide rates:

| US level | Illustrative rate | Google’s $5 example |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 1 point per $1 USD | 5 points |
| Silver | 1.10 points per $1 USD | 6 points after rounding 5.50 |
Rates can change with country, level, and offer. Compare only rates that apply to your country and account; the US figures above should not be treated as a global promise. See Google’s US earning rules.
Do free app downloads earn points?
Not automatically. Google sometimes offers points for installing featured apps or games, but these are specific promotions rather than a reward for every free download. For an eligible installation offer, Google says you must install the app for the first time and use it for at least two minutes within the first 24 hours after installation.

Eligibility may also depend on whether you have previously downloaded, installed, or used the app. Personalization settings affect Google’s access to some usage information, which can be relevant to determining offer eligibility. Read the individual offer’s terms before installing; a prior install or use may disqualify you.
Where to find and use promotions
In the Play Store app, open profile icon > Play Points > Earn. Review the offer’s eligible purchase or app, required action, activation step, qualifying period, currency limits, and deadline before acting. Offers shown in one account may not appear for another.

Promotions can be limited to selected participants or depend on purchase history or Play Store activity. Some require activation, an active Play Pass subscription, first-time subscription status, or purchases in a single currency. A promotion may advertise a higher rate for a limited period, but multiple promotions do not stack on one purchase: Google applies the highest available rate for the specified period. Subscription bonuses for first-time subscribers may be one-time and capped. The exact terms shown with the offer control.

Points earned count toward both your redeemable balance and your annual level progress. You can redeem balance points for certain in-app items or Google Play credit. Points cannot be purchased, converted to cash, or transferred between accounts.

Under Google’s US guidance, balance points expire one year after your last point-earning or point-using activity. Redeeming points does not reduce annual level progress. A level lasts through the end of the following calendar year, with progress recalculated at the start of the year. If a qualifying purchase is canceled or returned, Google reverses the related points and level progress. Changing your billing country causes you to lose points, and your level does not carry over. Consult the local rules in Google’s earn-and-track guidance, since these details may differ by region.
Gift cards are not a points-earning shortcut
In some regions, authorized retailers sell physical Google Play gift cards that can add Play balance for eligible Store purchases. Buying a gift card is not established as a way to earn Play Points. Google says digital gift cards bought through its gifting feature are excluded from Play Points, except where eligible users receive points during select promotions; Play balance and Play Points cannot be used to buy those gift cards. Gift card availability and use are country- and currency-restricted. See Google’s pages on gift cards and where to buy them and gifted gift cards.
