First identify the console and the exact MechaCon chip and version, then use only the documented method for that chip family and supported hardware layout. Both documented approaches can write to console state, so a firmware dump is not a risk-free, read-only operation.
What the MechaCon does—and what a dump can tell you
MechaCon means “mechanics controller.” It controls optical-drive mechanics and is also associated with security functions such as disc security, MagicGate, and KELF decryption, as described in the PS2 Developer Wiki’s MechaCon reference.
A firmware image is raw data, not a self-explanatory report of what the console will do. The available dumper documentation explains acquisition and recovery, but does not establish a general-purpose method for interpreting every byte or attributing a security behavior to a particular difference.
Identify the console and chip before choosing a dumper
Record the SCPH model, chassis or board identity if known, and the full MechaCon model and version. Do not rely on a shortened chip label or the console model alone. PS2Ident can collect console ROM and MechaCon NVRAM dumps alongside hardware-identification data. Its documentation cautions that model identification can be incomplete or inaccurate even when chip and version IDs read from hardware are accurate.

Use those identifiers to decide which documentation applies. The Dragon-family MechaDump support list is not evidence that an SPC970 system is compatible, and the SPC970 tool’s listed layouts do not establish support for every older console that looks similar.
Choose the documented path that matches the hardware
| Path | Documented scope | State changes and recovery |
|---|---|---|
| MechaDump for Dragon-family MechaCon | The project documents SCPH-500xx, all slim systems, and PSX systems; follow its current compatibility details for the exact system. MechaDump documentation | The documented process installs a hook and includes EEPROM restoration. The project warns that a failure can brick the console. MechaDump documentation |
| SPC970-MechaLIBerator for pre-Dragon SPC970 | Documents a dumper for the 256 KiB pre-Dragon SPC970 ROM window, with supported layouts identified by observed configuration bytes. The documented layouts include SCPH-18000 and CXP102064-era consoles, and identified CXP103049 markers including SCPH-39001. Do not infer support for unlisted variants. SPC970-MechaLIBerator documentation | Uses low-level MechaCon and NVRAM writes, with baseline and recovery artifacts. The project warns that unsupported hardware, interruption, or storage/software failure can corrupt console data or prevent normal operation. SPC970-MechaLIBerator documentation |
The PS2 Developer Wiki’s September 2026 update points to a newly discovered way to dump SPC970 firmware, except version 1. That finding does not make every SPC970 revision or layout supported by the project tool; check both the version and the documented layout before proceeding. PS2 Developer Wiki: MechaCon

Before you start: preserve a baseline and prevent interruptions
- Read the current instructions for the exact tool and supported chip or layout before running it. Do not adapt a procedure from another MechaCon generation.
- Keep the console identity, tool version, untouched NVRAM capture, session files, ROM output, checksums, and reports together. Make a separate copy of the original files and do not alter the raw dump.
- For SPC970-MechaLIBerator, use writable USB storage and preserve the complete
SPC970/directory. Its initial capture includes a full 1,024-byte NVRAM image, a raw configuration window, and capture details with CRC32 values. The tool creates numbered captures and uses saved baselines and verified chunk records for recovery. SPC970-MechaLIBerator documentation - Do not reset the console, remove storage, or cut power while a write or capture operation is active. The SPC970 project specifically warns that interruption can corrupt console state. It also notes that some power-loss, interrupted USB-write, and USB-capacity failure handling still needs confirmation on real hardware. SPC970-MechaLIBerator documentation
Dumping Dragon-family firmware with MechaDump
MechaDump’s procedure depends on a hook and a controlled reload of the MechaCon patch state. The project documents two hook choices and characterizes its disc-protection hook as safer than the IRQ hook; that is the project’s own risk assessment, not an independent safety guarantee. MechaDump documentation
- Confirm that the console and MechaCon are within the project’s documented support scope, then read the current README’s procedure and prerequisites.
- Choose a hook only as the README directs for your setup. The disc-protection hook requires a legitimate regional disc and a working drive; the IRQ hook has broader prerequisites but is described as more dangerous by the project. MechaDump documentation
- Follow the README’s hook-installation and full-power-removal sequence so the MechaCon reloads the patch state as documented. Do not improvise if a step fails or is interrupted.
- Run the documented ROM-dump step, then complete the project’s EEPROM restoration sequence. MechaDump says the console powers down automatically after restoration.
- Verify that the documented restoration completed and retain the dump and related output with the console identity.
MechaDump warns that a failure can brick the console and may require soldering and a Raspberry Pi to recover. It also warns not to leave the system in the back-door state: factory patches are disabled there, which the project says could cause reliability issues. MechaDump documentation

Dumping a supported SPC970 layout
SPC970-MechaLIBerator is for the documented pre-Dragon SPC970 ROM window and layouts, not a general-purpose tool for all older PS2 consoles. Its layout support is keyed to observed configuration bytes rather than model and version strings alone. Compare the actual layout evidence against the project’s current list; a similar SCPH number is not enough. SPC970-MechaLIBerator documentation
- Check the current README for the exact supported layout and prerequisites before launching the homebrew application.
- Remove any disc, close the tray, and allow the drive to stop, as the project instructs. Attach writable USB storage.
- Complete the initial capture and retain its full output before accepting the on-screen write confirmation. Keep the baseline and session artifacts together.
- After confirming the documented operation, wait for completion without resetting, removing the USB storage, or cutting power.
- Use the project’s documented NVRAM restoration or recovery flow, then retain its verification artifacts alongside the captured firmware.
The tool’s recovery design depends on its saved baselines and verified chunk records. Do not delete, rename, or separate session and recovery files in a way that prevents the documented recovery flow from finding them. SPC970-MechaLIBerator documentation

- TWO SEPARATE 128 MB BANKS, NOT ONE POOL OF 256 MB: The selector on the front of the card chooses which bank the console talks to, and each bank is its own storage area with its own save list. Nothing spans the two, so a file written on one side is invisible from the other. Set the selector first and then turn the console on, because the console reads the position once at start-up and does not look again.
- BUILT FOR PS2 AND FOR THE SLIM, AND FOR NOTHING ELSE: It drops into the memory card slot made for PS2, on every revision from the first SCPH-10000 through to the 90000 series, fat or slim. It is not for the PS One, not for the PSX, and not for a fat PS3 running a disc in backward compatible mode. Those machines use a different card and will not read this one.
- IT IS A STORAGE CARD, AND IT WILL NOT RUN FREEMCBOOT: If the plan is to install a homebrew launcher, this is the wrong card and no amount of formatting will change that. What it does do is hold save files, and a lot of them, which is the job most people actually need a second card for.
- NO BOOT DISC, NO DRIVERS, NOTHING TO INSTALL: Push it into the slot and the console lists it straight away. Save sizes vary by title, and the back of a game case usually prints how many kilobytes a save needs, so you can work out how far one bank will go before you fill it.
- WHAT ARRIVES IS ONE BLACK CARD, 5.6 BY 4.1 BY 0.6 CM: Two habits keep a save file intact on any card of this kind: leave the console powered down while the card goes in or comes out, and do not cut the power while a title is writing.
Inspect and preserve the resulting dump
- Keep one untouched copy of the raw firmware and make any working copy separately.
- Record the console model, board or chassis information if known, full MechaCon model and version, dumper version, acquisition date, and the associated checksums or reports.
- When comparing two captures, compare only after recording whether their hardware identities and acquisition methods match. A byte difference by itself does not prove a security behavior or a faulty dump.
- Do not treat a successful read as evidence that the console’s state was restored; confirm the tool’s required restoration and verification steps independently.
The project instructions establish ways to acquire and recover data for specified hardware; they do not establish a universal interpretation workflow for the resulting image. Keep conclusions about what a byte or region means appropriately limited unless supported by separate, corroborated technical analysis.
