Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To dump a game cartridge, use a cartridge reader that explicitly supports its console and cartridge type, then follow that reader’s current instructions to copy the game data—and, if supported, its save data—to a computer or SD card. Compatibility and setup vary by system. Owning the cartridge does not automatically settle whether making a copy or bypassing access controls is lawful, so keep any dump private and check the rules where you live.
What a cartridge dump contains
A cartridge reader accesses data stored on a game cartridge and transfers it to a computer or, with some devices, an SD card. The game program is commonly called the ROM. Some readers can also read and restore save data; that is a separate feature, so check for it rather than assuming a ROM reader can back up a save.
A dump is a data file, not a guarantee that the game will run on another device. Playing it requires a compatible system or software, and modern cartridges may involve encryption or other access controls that add technical and legal complications.
Choose a reader for the exact cartridge
Start with the console family and cartridge in front of you—not just the game’s name. A reader intended for one system is not automatically compatible with another, even if the cartridges look similar. Check the maker’s supported-system list, required adapters, software, and whether ROM and save backup or restore are supported.

You can back up game , back up or restore game saves, and write to supported burn cards
- MULTIPLE SAVE TYPES: Game card burner supports multiple save types, including support for SRAM, support for Flash and support for EEPROM of support for Gameboy Advance cartridges, providing a fluent gaming experience and automatically detecting save types

| Option | Documented system support | ROM and save features | Workflow and setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| GBxCart RW | Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance, according to the manufacturer’s product information and manual. | The manufacturer documents ROM and save backup and restore. | Use the manufacturer’s supported computer software and follow its cartridge-specific instructions. The manual specifies 5V for GB/GBC modes and 3.3V for GBA mode. |
| Open Source Cartridge Reader (OSCR) | The project documents support across multiple systems, including NES/Famicom, SNES/Super Famicom, N64, Game Boy Color, GBA, and Sega systems, depending on configuration and adapters. | Features depend on the system, adapter, and configuration; consult the project documentation for the cartridge you have. | The project describes a standalone SD-card approach, but setup is modular and may require assembly or configuration and the correct adapter. |
These capabilities are described by the GBxCart RW manufacturer and manual and the OSCR project documentation. FlashGBX also lists compatible readers including GBxCart RW, Joey Jr, and GBFlash; confirm compatibility for your particular cartridge before buying or connecting a device.
What to compare before choosing
- Exact support: Confirm both the console family and cartridge type, and check whether an adapter is needed.
- Save handling: Look for explicit support for reading and restoring saves if preserving progress is your goal.
- Computer or SD workflow: Decide whether you want a computer-connected reader or a standalone SD-card setup.
- Setup demands: Check whether the reader needs assembly, particular software, or configuration.
- Electrical and handling instructions: Follow the device’s voltage and insertion/removal guidance for that cartridge family.
- Current documentation: Check the maker’s latest compatibility and software notes; do not infer support for unofficial cartridges unless the maker or project says so.
Dump a cartridge using the reader’s documented workflow
There is no universal sequence of buttons, voltage settings, adapters, or file formats. Follow the instructions for your exact reader and cartridge instead of applying settings from another system.

- Various storage types to read and write to meet different requirements
- Support directly control content using computer file manager as easy as using a USB drive
- Write your game on a rewritable cartridge for game testing
- This allows you to back up the cartridge game to your local PC and protect your progress
- This allows you to view pictures directly on your computer. Managing and editing of game images is very important
- Identify the cartridge. Note its console family and type, then verify that the reader explicitly supports it.
- Read the current manual and software notes. Confirm the required adapter, connection method, voltage setting, and supported software before inserting the cartridge.
- Prepare the cartridge as directed. Inspect or clean contacts only as the device maker or project recommends. OSCR documentation, for example, advises powering off before inserting or removing a cartridge and describes voltage selection.
- Connect and read the cartridge. Use the reader’s documented computer or SD-card workflow and supported software to read the ROM. If you want a save backup, use the documented save-data function separately.
- Store the files securely. Keep the resulting files private. Do not upload, sell, or share copyrighted game data.
If the reader does not recognize the cartridge, stop and check the supported-system list, adapter, voltage, contacts, and software notes before trying again. Do not guess at electrical settings or force a cartridge into an adapter. For a system with encryption or access controls, a basic cartridge reader may not be sufficient, and bypassing those controls raises additional legal questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What owning the cartridge means legally
There is no universal legal answer to “Can I make a personal backup of a game cartridge?” Copyright rules and anti-circumvention laws differ by country, and ownership of a physical cartridge does not by itself establish a general right to reproduce the game or bypass access controls. Keeping a dump private is prudent, but privacy does not resolve every legal question.

United States: copying and access controls are separate concerns
The U.S. Copyright Office says: “Section 1201 is a provision of the copyright law (title 17), that prohibits circumvention of technological protection measures employed by or on behalf of copyright owners to control access to their works.” That statement concerns circumvention of access controls; it is not a general personal-backup permission.
U.S. law does provide limited video-game-related exemptions under Section 1201. The Copyright Office’s listed cases include qualifying preservation activity by eligible libraries, archives, or museums, and local gameplay access for a lawfully acquired game that depends on an external authentication server the copyright owner has stopped providing. These are bounded exemptions, not a blanket exemption for consumers who own cartridges. The Office’s rulemaking page describes renewed exemptions for October 2027 through October 2030; because rulemaking dates and terms can change, consult the current official materials if they matter to your situation.

Other countries: do not assume U.S. rules apply
Canada illustrates why location matters. Section 30.6 of Canada’s Copyright Act contains limited provisions concerning computer-program compatibility and backup copies. Its backup provision conditions the copy on destroying it after the person ceases to own or be licensed to use the program. That specific statutory text is not a blanket right to copy any game or bypass copy protection, and it should not be generalized to other countries.
The rules for your country, the game’s license terms, and the particular cartridge or reader may all matter. If legality is consequential, check local law or seek qualified legal advice rather than treating cartridge ownership or private use as a guarantee.
