To drive more safely on snow and ice, first decide whether the trip can wait. If you must go, check local weather and road alerts, clear the vehicle completely, slow down, leave much more space, and use gentle controls. If conditions deteriorate, stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Before you set out: decide whether to travel

Check the forecast, road closures, delays, and route advisories before leaving, and keep checking for changes. Consider whether the journey is essential, how exposed the route is, and whether there is a safe place to stop. The UK Highway Code says, “DO NOT drive in these conditions unless your journey is essential” (Rule 228); that is UK guidance, not a universal legal rule. Transport Canada likewise advises drivers to adapt plans to conditions and stop somewhere safe if driving becomes too risky.

Snow or sleet can accompany serious crashes: the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recorded 320 fatal crashes and estimated 22,293 injury crashes in the United States in 2023 when snow or sleet was present. Those are crashes associated with those conditions, not evidence that snow or sleet alone caused each one.

Prepare the vehicle and your visibility

  • Clear every window, mirror, light, and registration plate before driving. Demist the windows, and remove snow from the roof and other surfaces where it could slide or blow into the path of another road user.
  • Check tire condition and pressure against the vehicle maker’s specifications. Under UK rules, the Highway Code gives a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm for cars, light vans, and light trailers; requirements differ elsewhere.
  • Make sure you have winter essentials suited to the route and weather. An ice scraper, shovel, warm clothing, and a charged phone are useful starting points, but no single kit is right for every trip.

Winter tires and other preparation

In places with frequent cold, snowy, or icy weather, winter tires can be an important safety choice. Transport Canada recommends using them on all wheels. Check that any tire is suitable for your vehicle and in good condition, and consult local rules: tire requirements vary by jurisdiction, and a recommendation is not necessarily a legal mandate.

How to drive on snow and ice

Reduce speed and leave more room

Drive at a speed that reflects the traction and visibility you actually have, not just the posted limit. Snow, slush, and ice can make stopping take much longer. The UK Highway Code says stopping distances in icy or snowy conditions can be ten times greater than on dry roads (Rule 230); treat that as a UK Code warning, not a precise stopping-distance calculation for every car and surface.

The Code also says a two-second gap on high-speed roads should be doubled on wet roads and can be up to ten times greater on icy roads. That is UK guidance for the stated context, not a universal formula for every road. In practice, leave substantially more space than usual and increase it further when traction or visibility worsens.

Use smooth inputs and plan ahead

  • Accelerate and brake gently; steer smoothly rather than making sudden movements.
  • Slow down before a bend, and brake progressively while the vehicle is still on a straight section where possible.
  • Leave extra room before turns and allow more time for lane changes. Avoid overtaking when snow, slush, or poor visibility makes it risky.
  • Watch for snowplows and give them plenty of room; do not crowd or pass them where conditions make doing so unsafe.

Watch for hidden ice and changing technology behavior

Black ice can be difficult to see even when visibility is good, according to Canadian winter storm guidance. Do not rely on a clear-looking surface to prove that the road is ice-free. If you need to assess conditions, do so only from a safe place, not by testing traction while moving.

What to keep in a winter emergency kit

Choose supplies based on the weather, route length, remoteness, and space in your vehicle. Official recommendations vary, so treat the following as useful examples rather than a universal required kit:

If you become stranded

  1. Make the vehicle visible. Use bright markers or an interior light so other road users can see you.
  2. Stay with the vehicle if it is safe. Avoid overexerting yourself trying to push or dig the car out, especially in severe weather.
  3. Check the exhaust pipe. Clear snow away so exhaust can escape. A blocked exhaust can allow carbon monoxide to build up in the vehicle.
  4. Use the engine sparingly for warmth. NHTSA advises running it only occasionally and briefly. Never run the vehicle for long periods with the windows up, or in an enclosed space, because carbon monoxide can be fatal.
  5. Use your phone and supplies thoughtfully. Contact local emergency or roadside services as appropriate, and conserve battery and warmth while waiting.

When conditions change during the trip

If visibility, grip, or road conditions become too poor to continue safely, do not press on simply to reach your destination. Follow local alerts and road authority advice, and stop somewhere safe when possible. Transport Canada specifically advises finding a safe place to stop when driving becomes too risky.
