You can install Microsoft 365 offline on a Windows 10 PC after downloading its installer image while connected to the internet. For a personal subscription, choose Offline installer in your Microsoft account, download the IMG file, mount it in File Explorer, and run the setup program inside. Work or school accounts generally use a separate business deployment route.
Choose the right download method
The installation route depends on how you get Microsoft 365. A personal subscription uses the Microsoft account portal. A work or school installation should follow the business instructions, which can use the Office Deployment Tool (ODT) for offline downloads and managed deployment.

If you are unsure which account type applies, use the account associated with the Microsoft 365 license. A work or school account should not be treated as a personal home subscription.

In the installation dialog, open Choose a version and select Offline installer.

Choose the language and select Install. Save the downloaded IMG file. The download itself requires an internet connection.

Open the IMG file to mount it as a virtual drive. If no window opens, open File Explorer and look for the mounted drive under This PC. Windows may assign a drive letter other than D: if that letter is already in use.

Open the mounted drive’s Office folder and run
Setup32.exeorSetup64.exe. These install the 32-bit and 64-bit versions, respectively. Choose the one that fits your device and compatibility needs; neither is best for every PC.Special offer. When setup completes, reconnect to the internet and open an Office app. If prompted, sign in with the account used to buy or subscribe to Microsoft 365 to activate the apps.

To check for updates in an Office app, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
You can keep the IMG on the PC or copy it to a USB flash drive or disc for later installation. The removable copy is optional.
Install for work or school with ODT
Microsoft documents the Office Deployment Tool as a command-line option for business installations, including offline downloads. An administrator or technically experienced user creates an XML configuration that specifies the product, architecture, language, and other deployment choices. The product ID must match the organization’s plan; Microsoft’s sample instructions distinguish Microsoft 365 Apps for business from Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise.

Obtain the correct ODT configuration for the organization’s Microsoft 365 plan and requirements.

Run
setup.exe /download <configuration.xml>to download the installation files to the configured location. -
Run
setup.exe /configure <configuration.xml>to install using that configuration.
For product IDs, XML examples, and the current deployment procedure, follow Microsoft’s Office Deployment Tool documentation rather than borrowing a configuration intended for a different plan. If the organization’s portal has no install option, ask its Microsoft 365 administrator to confirm that a license is assigned and installation is allowed.

What “offline installer” does—and does not—mean
Microsoft Support explains that an internet connection is needed to download the installer file; after that, Microsoft 365 can be installed offline at a convenient time. The offline method is useful when the connection is unreliable during setup, but it does not eliminate the initial download. Reconnect after installation to activate the apps and check for updates.
Microsoft says the offline installer may help with slow or unreliable connections and some proxy, firewall, antivirus, or internet-connection problems. It is not a guaranteed fix for every failed installation.

Windows 10 Home and Pro support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft 365 Apps may continue to work on Windows 10, but Microsoft warns that an unsupported operating system can cause performance and reliability issues. Microsoft recommends that organizations move Microsoft 365 Apps devices to Windows 11.
Microsoft’s current lifecycle guidance says Microsoft 365 Apps security updates on Windows 10 are scheduled to continue through October 10, 2028. Windows 10 devices receive Microsoft 365 Apps feature updates through Version 2608; after that, they receive security updates only through the stated end date. This app-update transition does not restore Windows 10 operating-system support.

Troubleshoot common problems

No offline installer option: Check that you signed in with the account tied to the Microsoft 365 product. For work or school, confirm with the administrator that your license is assigned and installation is permitted.

The IMG appears not to open: Find the file in Downloads and open it again. If a drive window does not appear, use File Explorer to locate the mounted virtual drive; its letter can vary.

Setup still needs internet: Confirm that the IMG download completed and that you are running setup from the mounted image. The image must be downloaded online, and later activation and update checks also need connectivity.

Installation stalls or fails: The offline image can avoid repeatedly fetching setup components over a weak connection, but it cannot guarantee success. Check the connection and any proxy, firewall, or antivirus restrictions, and follow Microsoft’s guidance for the account type you use.
