Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Check the status code first, use the response’s Content-Type to choose a file extension, and write the bytes to disk in binary mode. If the URL already points to a file rather than a web page, use a provider’s raw-download mode instead of asking a screenshot renderer to capture it.
What a screenshot API sends back
A screenshot API usually renders a web page and returns the resulting image or PDF in the HTTP response body. That response body is the file. It is not necessarily JSON, even if the request uses JSON options or the API returns JSON when something goes wrong.
ScreenshotEngine documents that a successful request returns HTTP 200 and the file bytes directly, while errors return JSON. CaptureAPI similarly documents binary image and PDF responses, with a separate JSON option that embeds an image as a base64 data URL. Those are provider-specific behaviors: check the API documentation for the endpoint you use.
The key distinction is between the representation of the request and the representation of the response. A POST request may send JSON describing a URL and capture settings, while the response is raw PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF data. Do not call a JSON parser on a successful binary response.

Choose rendering or raw download
Render a web page
Use screenshot rendering when the target is an HTML page and you need its visual appearance. Choose an image format such as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or request PDF output when you need a document. Viewport size, full-page capture, cookies, and custom request headers are commonly controlled through request options; the exact parameter names vary by provider.
Download a file that already exists
If the URL already serves a PDF, image, ZIP archive, CSV export, font, or video, a screenshot renderer may not be the right operation. Use a provider’s raw-download mode if it offers one. For example, awl.sh documents a download=true option for file URLs. Confirm the provider’s current supported file types and response behavior before relying on it.
Rendering and downloading are different jobs: rendering turns a page into a visual artifact; raw download retrieves the file the URL serves. Choosing the right operation avoids getting a screenshot of a file viewer when you meant to save the underlying file.
Download an API response safely
- Keep credentials on the server. Store the API key in an environment variable or secret manager. Use the provider’s supported Authorization or Bearer header where available. Do not put a production key in browser code or a URL query string.
- Send the target URL and capture options. A typical request includes the page URL, output format, viewport or full-page setting, and optional cookies or headers. GET can be convenient for simple requests; POST keeps complex options and credentials out of the URL when the provider supports it.
- Check the HTTP status before saving. A non-success response may contain a JSON error message. Save only after confirming the status is successful, or you may create a file called
screenshot.pngthat contains an error object instead of an image. - Read the response Content-Type. Use a documented or returned MIME type such as
image/png,image/jpeg,image/webp, orapplication/pdfto select the extension. If the type is absent or unexpected, preserve it in logs and avoid assuming the response is a PNG. - Write bytes, not decoded text. Use binary output in curl and binary file modes in programming languages. Do not convert the body to a string or parse it as JSON unless the response is actually documented as JSON.
- Validate and log. Check that the file is non-empty and that its MIME type matches expectations. Where practical, inspect a format signature, such as the leading bytes for PNG or PDF. Keep any provider request ID with error logs so you can diagnose or retry failures.

export SCREENSHOTENGINE_API_KEY="YOUR_API_KEY"
curl --fail-with-body --request POST
'https://api.screenshotengine.com/v1/screenshot'
--header "Authorization: Bearer $SCREENSHOTENGINE_API_KEY"
--header 'Content-Type: application/json'
--data '{"url":"https://example.com","format":"png","height":"full"}'
--output screenshot.png
--output writes the response body to a file rather than the terminal. --fail-with-body makes curl return an error status for HTTP failures while retaining the response body, which can help with diagnosis; check curl’s exit status and inspect an error body rather than treating it as an image.
Python: choose the extension from Content-Type
import os
import requests
r = requests.post(
"https://api.screenshotengine.com/v1/screenshot",
headers={"Authorization": f"Bearer {os.environ['SCREENSHOTENGINE_API_KEY']}"},
json={"url": "https://example.com", "format": "pdf"},
timeout=60,
)
r.raise_for_status()
content_type = r.headers.get("content-type", "")
extension = ".pdf" if "application/pdf" in content_type else ".bin"
with open("capture" + extension, "wb") as f:
f.write(r.content)
Set SCREENSHOTENGINE_API_KEY in the environment before running the script. The example handles PDF versus other content conservatively; for an application supporting several formats, map each expected MIME type explicitly and reject unexpected types instead of labeling them as an image.
Browser JavaScript: download through your backend
The browser should call your own server endpoint, which holds the provider key and returns the capture body. This client-side example downloads the returned blob:
const response = await fetch('/api/capture', {
method: 'POST',
headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' },
body: JSON.stringify({ url })
});
if (!response.ok) throw new Error(`Capture failed: ${response.status}`);
const blob = await response.blob();
const extension = blob.type === 'application/pdf' ? 'pdf' : 'png';
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.href = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
link.download = `capture.${extension}`;
link.click();
URL.revokeObjectURL(link.href);
This presumes your backend forwards a valid binary response and sets an appropriate content type. In a production interface, revoke the object URL after the download has been initiated and handled, and surface backend errors in the UI.

Large responses, storage, and reliability
For modest captures, buffering the response in memory is straightforward. For large full-page images, PDFs, or batches, avoid accumulating many complete responses in application memory. Stream the body to disk or object storage when your HTTP client and storage layer support streaming. The appropriate limit depends on your runtime, provider, and workload; consult their current documentation rather than assuming a universal maximum.
Keep timeout handling and retries separate from file writing. A timeout or failed load is not a valid file, and blindly retrying every error can duplicate work or hide persistent failures. Record the HTTP status, content type, elapsed time, and provider request identifier when available. Retry only errors your provider documents as transient, with a bounded policy and backoff.
Raw response bytes are simplest when your application owns the download and storage flow. A hosted download URL can be more convenient when a client cannot accept a large binary response directly, but check how long the URL remains available, whether it is signed, and whether the provider retains the capture. Rate limits, response-size limits, geographic rendering, and retention vary by service and may change.
Troubleshooting downloaded screenshot files
The “PNG” opens as text or JSON
The API likely returned an error body that your code saved without checking the status. Check the HTTP status and inspect the response content type and body before writing. Verify authentication, request parameters, and the target URL, then retry only after correcting the cause.

The file is empty or truncated
Check the client’s exit code or exception, the response status, timeouts, and any proxy or server body-size limits. If streaming, ensure the stream is fully consumed and closed. If the provider returns a job identifier rather than the file immediately, follow its documented asynchronous workflow instead of saving the job response as the capture.
The extension does not match the contents
Do not infer the format solely from the requested option. Check the response’s Content-Type and, where practical, the file signature. Handle errors and redirects explicitly, and map supported types to extensions; use a neutral extension or reject the response when the type is unknown.
The capture is blank, incomplete, or missing images
Confirm the target URL is reachable by the rendering service and that the page does not require authentication, cookies, or headers you have omitted. Dynamic pages may need a longer wait, a selector-based wait, or full-page capture settings, depending on the API. Lazy-loaded images and consent overlays can affect the rendered result. Check the provider’s options and any response metadata before assuming the file-writing step is at fault.
The browser exposes the API key
Move the provider request to a server-side endpoint. The browser should send the target URL and allowed options to your backend; the backend authenticates to the screenshot provider and returns the binary body. Apply your own authorization, URL validation, and request limits so the endpoint cannot be abused as an unrestricted screenshot proxy.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call GET endpoint returns an image or PDF response; the example below saves the response bytes as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for formats and request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is available on every plan, and yearly billing gives two months free. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo and start with 1,000 free screenshots a month, no card required.
Questions developers often ask
Can a screenshot API download a ZIP or CSV?
Only if the provider offers a raw-download operation for file URLs. A screenshot renderer is intended to capture the appearance of web pages; it is not automatically a general-purpose file downloader.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I save an API response as base64?
Only when the endpoint specifically returns a JSON object containing a base64 data URL. For ordinary binary responses, save the response body directly; base64 adds encoding overhead and is unnecessary.
Should my application store the capture or use a provider URL?
Use raw bytes when your application needs direct control over storage and delivery. A provider-hosted URL can simplify delivery, but first confirm its retention period, access controls, and expiration behavior in the provider’s documentation.
