Start in Steam, not a third-party download site. Install the Steam client from Valve, search for the exact game listing, confirm it says Free To Play, and select the play or install control. The supplied title is not a unique game name; the strongest current match is Umbra Mortis, whose Steam listing describes a three-player online PvE shooter. Verify that title and listing before installing, because another free co-op shooter could fit the same description.
First, identify the exact game
“The free co-op shooter” is a description rather than a unique title. In this guide, Umbra Mortis is the working match because its official Steam page identifies it as a free-to-play, three-player online PvE shooter. The listing says: “This game is a 3 player coop PvE shooter where you play as members of a secret organization, Umbra Mortis.”
Before clicking anything, compare the search result with the official store page. Confirm all of the following:

- The publisher and store description match the game you expect.
- The page displays Free To Play and a play/install control, rather than a similarly named paid game or a time-limited event.
- The operating-system and hardware requirements are compatible with your PC.
Steam’s displayed review snapshot for Umbra Mortis was 83% positive from 67 user reviews when accessed in 2026. That percentage can change as new reviews arrive, so treat it as a dated snapshot, not a permanent score.

What you need before downloading
- A Windows PC that meets the game’s minimum requirements; the listing specifies Windows 10 at minimum and Windows 11 as recommended.
- A 64-bit processor and operating system.
- At least 2 GB of free storage for the listed installation size, plus additional working room for Steam updates and temporary files.
- A broadband internet connection. This is an online co-op game, so an offline-only setup is not sufficient for multiplayer.
- A Steam account. You can play with keyboard and mouse, or add a compatible controller.
- Steam installed from Valve’s official Steam page. The page labels the download link Install Steam.
How to download and install it
- Install Steam. Open Valve’s official Steam page and choose Install Steam. Download the installer for Windows, run it, and follow the setup prompts.
- Sign in. Launch Steam and log in to your existing account, or create one if you do not have an account.
- Search for the confirmed title. Use Steam’s search field and enter Umbra Mortis only if that is the title your group has confirmed. Open the game’s official store listing rather than relying on a similarly named result.
- Check the price label. The listing should show Free To Play. For Umbra Mortis, the page displays Play Umbra Mortis, Free To Play, and Play Game. If you see a price, a purchase button, or a different edition, stop and recheck the title.
- Start the installation. Select the play or install control. Steam may ask you to choose a library location. Pick a drive with enough free space and accept the download.
- Wait for Steam to finish. Track progress in the Downloads view. Keep Steam open and avoid shutting down the computer until the installation completes.
- Launch from your Library. Open Library, select the game, and choose Play. The first launch can take longer while files, graphics settings, or required components are initialized.
Set up your first session
Check the game’s own options
On first launch, review display mode, resolution, audio, graphics quality, and input settings. If the game offers a tutorial or practice mode, use it before inviting friends; this avoids making the group wait while you change controls. Do not assume that a setting shown in a video or older guide exists in your build. Menus can change between updates.
Confirm that the online service is reachable
Because Umbra Mortis is designed for online PvE, launch it while connected to broadband internet. If the game opens but cannot reach its online service, first check that Steam is online, then restart Steam and the game. A short service interruption, a pending update, or a blocked network connection can prevent a lobby from appearing.
How to play with friends
Umbra Mortis is built around a three-player online PvE session: you and up to two other players cooperate against the game’s enemies rather than competing in a player-versus-player match.
- Add the other players on Steam. Each person must have a Steam account and be connected to Steam. Use Steam’s friends feature to send and accept friend requests.
- Launch the game. Open it from the Steam Library and wait until its multiplayer or lobby screen is available.
- Create or join a group. Use the game’s lobby or multiplayer flow to create a session, then invite your Steam friends. Exact button names can vary by build, so follow the labels shown in your current version.
- Check the party size. Plan for three players total. If a fourth person tries to join, the game may reject the invite or keep that person out of the active squad.
- Ready up and start. Once the intended players appear in the lobby, use the ready or start control shown by the game. If one player is missing, cancel the launch and confirm that the invitation was accepted and that everyone is online.
Do not send friends to an unofficial executable or a random download page. The Steam listing and Steam client are the official PC route, and using one shared listing prevents version and update mismatches.

Keyboard, mouse, and controller choices
A controller is optional. Steam documents support for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo controllers, as well as configuration for supported third-party input devices through Steam Input.
Connect a gamepad before launch
- Connect the wired controller or pair the wireless controller with Windows before starting the game.
- Open Steam and confirm that the device is visible in Steam’s controller settings.
- Launch the game and open its controls menu. Select the detected gamepad if the game offers an input-device choice.
- If buttons do not respond correctly, return to Steam Input and choose a standard controller layout, then relaunch the game.
Connecting the pad before launch gives the game the best chance of selecting the correct input profile. If you switch between mouse and controller during play, check which device is currently active and verify that the on-screen prompts match it.
System requirements for Umbra Mortis
The following specifications are the requirements shown on the Steam listing. “Minimum” is the baseline stated by the developer; it does not guarantee high frame rates or maximum visual quality. “Recommended” is the higher configuration listed for a better target experience.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | Windows 11 |
| Architecture | 64-bit processor and operating system | 64-bit processor and operating system |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-8250U | Intel Core i7-12700H |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce 2070 | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 |
| DirectX | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Network | Broadband internet | Broadband internet |
| Storage | 2 GB available space | 2 GB available space |
Check the live listing again immediately before downloading. Developers can revise requirements, and Steam may display a newer build than the one described in an older guide. The 2 GB figure is the stated space requirement, not a promise that the drive needs only exactly 2 GB: updates and temporary files can require additional free capacity.

If Steam will not install or download the game
The game does not appear in search
- Search the exact title, including spelling and spacing.
- Remove filters that hide free-to-play or Windows games.
- Open the result and compare its description with the game your friends named.
- If several games match the wording “free co-op shooter,” ask the group for the exact Steam title or store page before proceeding.
The page shows a price instead of “Free To Play”
You may have opened a different game, an edition, downloadable content, or a similarly named result. Return to the search results and verify the title and listing details. Do not enter payment information simply to reach a play button when the intended listing is supposed to be free to play.
The download is stuck
- Open Steam’s Downloads view and check whether another update is using the connection.
- Pause and resume the download.
- Confirm that the selected drive has free space beyond the listed 2 GB requirement.
- Restart Steam and try again.
- If the problem affects only this game, remove and restart the download after confirming the correct library location.
The game launches and closes immediately
- Confirm that Windows, DirectX 12 support, the 64-bit requirement, memory, and graphics hardware meet the listing.
- Install any pending Windows or graphics-driver updates.
- Restart the PC, then launch the game from the Steam Library.
- If the game offers a graphics preset, begin with a conservative preset and increase quality gradually.
You cannot join a friend
- Make sure both players are signed in to Steam and have accepted each other’s friend requests.
- Confirm that everyone is running the same current game build and that no Steam download is still applying an update.
- Have the host recreate the lobby and send a new invite through the game’s multiplayer flow.
- Check the party count; the intended session supports three players total.
The controller is not detected
- Reconnect or re-pair the controller before launching the game.
- Check that Steam recognizes the device and that Steam Input is enabled for it.
- Close other software that may be taking exclusive control of the gamepad.
- Restart the game after changing the controller configuration.
What “free to play” means here
On the Umbra Mortis listing, Free To Play means the base PC game can be downloaded and launched without an upfront purchase through Steam. It does not by itself describe optional purchases, future content, or account requirements. Read the current store page for any disclosures that may have been added since this guide was written.
The important distinction is between permanent free-to-play access and a limited free weekend or promotional trial. A genuine free-to-play listing normally keeps the play control available after the promotion ends; a trial page identifies its dates or restrictions. Always rely on the current label on the official listing.
A quick pre-session checklist
- Exact game title confirmed with your group.
- Official Steam listing shows Free To Play.
- PC meets the listed Windows, processor, memory, graphics, DirectX, and storage requirements.
- Steam is installed and you are signed in.
- Broadband internet is working.
- Friends are added on Steam and have accepted invitations.
- Party has no more than three players.
- Controller is connected before launch, if you are using one.
- Game has finished downloading and updating before the lobby is created.
Bottom line
Use Steam’s official Install Steam route, verify the exact game listing, and select its play/install control only after confirming the Free To Play label. For the strongest match, Umbra Mortis, expect a three-player online PvE session, check the Windows and hardware requirements first, and configure a controller through Steam Input if you prefer gamepad controls. If the title or store URL supplied by your group differs, follow that confirmed listing instead of assuming every “free co-op shooter” search result is the same game.
