To get the Squad — PS5 Alpha Preview, open the official Squad alpha page, select Download Alpha, follow its PlayStation Store link, and choose Add to Library on the free listing. On your PS5, open Game Library, select the preview, and choose Download or Install. You must enlist through the alpha page, and the announced preview window is October 16–25, 2026.
What you need before downloading
The current preview is a PlayStation 5 product. It is not listed for PS4, Xbox consoles, or PC through this invitation. Prepare the following:
- A working PlayStation 5 console. The store listing identifies the product as PS5 and PS5 Pro enhanced.
- A PlayStation account you can use on the target console. The listing requires an account for online features.
- A compatible DualSense controller. A controller is required to play, but you do not need to buy a new one if you already have a working PS5 controller.
- Reliable internet access for the store transaction, download, updates, and online matches.

Is the Squad PS5 alpha free?
Yes. The PlayStation Store identifies Squad — PS5 Alpha Preview as a free beta/alpha product. The correct transaction is an account entitlement rather than a paid purchase: select Add to Library, then install it from the console. You should not buy a disc, a key, or an access code from another seller.

The free listing does not mean the preview is permanent. The announced access period is October 16–25, 2026, and the publisher has not promised that an installed copy will remain playable after that window. It also does not make the eventual console edition free. The broader console release is planned for 2027, with no exact launch date announced.
Download the official Squad PS5 alpha
- Open the official landing page. On a phone, computer, or PS5 browser, go to alpha.joinsquad.com. Use this page rather than a third-party download site or an unofficial code.
- Read the access notice. The page says PlayStation 5 players get first access from October 16 through October 25. Confirm that the current date falls within the announced window or that the page displays a newer notice.
- Select “Download Alpha.” The button sends you to the official PlayStation Store product page for Squad — PS5 Alpha Preview.
- Sign in to the correct PlayStation account. Use the account that you intend to use on the PS5. If a family member or another user will play, make sure the library entitlement is added to the account that has the appropriate console access. An entitlement added to one account does not automatically become a separate entitlement on another account.
- Confirm the product listing. The official listing names the item Squad — PS5 Alpha Preview, identifies it as a free beta/alpha product, and lists Secret Mode Limited as publisher. It is a PS5 and PS5 Pro enhanced title with a listed release date of October 16, 2026.
- Choose “Add to Library.” Because the preview is free, the store flow should add the product to your account without a purchase charge. Do not pay a third party for an access code.
- Switch to your PS5. On the console home screen, open Game Library, then browse your collection or use the search function to find Squad — PS5 Alpha Preview.
- Start the installation. Select the preview and choose Download or Install. Keep the console connected to the internet until the download and any required update finish.
- Launch after installation. Start the game from the home screen or Game Library. Complete the included Infantry Training and Pilot Training before entering the available Invasion Mode skirmish.
Check that you selected the right listing
Search results can include PC information, announcements, or unrelated products. Use these store details to verify that you are on the alpha listing:

If the page asks you to buy a disc, pay for a code, or install a PS4 version, back out and return to the official alpha page. The console version is planned as digital-only, so there is no announced physical alpha edition to order.

Cost, ownership, and account details
There is no alpha price to compare with a retail edition: the preview is listed at no charge. The practical cost is the internet connection and the storage space on your PS5. The official pages do not publish a download-size figure or a minimum free-space figure, so do not rely on screenshots or old PC requirements. Open the live store page and the PS5 storage screen before beginning if capacity is tight.
Add the listing to the PlayStation account that will actually launch the game. If another person uses the console, that person may need access through the console’s normal account-sharing and primary-console settings; the official listing only establishes the entitlement for the account that selected Add to Library. Owning Squad on PC does not grant a console copy, and the publisher has not announced cross-progression.
What happens when you first start the alpha
Complete Infantry Training
The preview includes Infantry Training. Use it to learn movement, weapons, squad communication, and the basic controls before joining a live match. Tactical shooters punish unfamiliar controls more severely than ordinary action games, so completing the lesson is the quickest way to avoid wasting a team’s opening minutes. Treat the lesson as part of the installation process, not as optional campaign content.
Complete Pilot Training
Pilot Training is also included. Finish it before attempting to operate aircraft in a live session. Training gives you a controlled place to learn the relevant controls without taking a vehicle away from a full squad. If you only intend to play infantry, you can still complete it so the available preview content is familiar.
Enter the available Invasion sample
The store listing says the alpha contains a limited Invasion Mode skirmish on the Gorodok map. That is a sample of the console preview, not a statement that every mode, map, or faction planned for the eventual console edition is already available. The menu may therefore look much smaller than the future product description.

The dates describe the announced access window, not a guaranteed permanent entitlement. Availability, store metadata, and access rules can change, so check the live official pages if you are trying to enlist close to October 25.
Online accounts and subscription requirements
The PlayStation Store listing requires a PlayStation account for online features. Because Squad is an online multiplayer game, normal PlayStation requirements for online multiplayer apply to your account and console.
The publisher has not announced a specific PlayStation Plus or Game Pass subscription arrangement for the full console release in the cited announcement. Do not assume that the free store listing removes every platform-level online requirement; check the current PlayStation account and store prompts when you launch. A prompt for an online-multiplayer entitlement is a platform requirement, not evidence that you selected the wrong alpha listing.

Future console content is separate from the alpha

Gorodok appearing in the alpha does not mean the complete map and mode lineup is already available. Conversely, a mode listed in the future plan should not be expected in this limited preview unless the live listing or in-game menu confirms it. The planned 100-player PvP figure also should not be used to override the alpha listing’s specific “up to 99 online players” wording.

Before you press Download: a practical checklist
- Confirm the console is a PS5, not a PS4 or an Xbox system.
- Open the official alpha page and complete enlistment.
- Check that the PlayStation Store page says Squad — PS5 Alpha Preview, is free, and names Secret Mode Limited.
- Sign in with the account that will launch the preview.
- Check available storage because no official minimum is published.
- Make sure the DualSense controller is charged and paired.

Troubleshooting the download
The “Download Alpha” button does not open the store
- Reload alpha.joinsquad.com and select the button again.
- Try a current browser on another device, then sign in to the PlayStation account used by your PS5.
- Use the PlayStation Store directly only after confirming that the product name is Squad — PS5 Alpha Preview. Avoid similarly named third-party pages.
The listing is visible but “Add to Library” is unavailable
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended PlayStation account.
- Check the date: the announced preview window is October 16–25, 2026, and store access can change outside that window.
- Return through the official alpha page and complete the enlistment step again.
- Verify that you are viewing the PS5 listing rather than a PC announcement or a future product page.
The game is in the library but not downloading
- Open Game Library and select the preview manually rather than relying on a home-screen shortcut.

You expected the complete console game
The alpha is a limited preview: the cited store description names training activities and a Gorodok Invasion sample. The larger mode, map, faction, and Fireteam plans belong to the later console release and should not be used as a checklist of current alpha content.

If you install it near the end of the window, complete enlistment and downloading as soon as possible. Recheck the official alpha page and the live PlayStation Store listing for any extension, maintenance notice, or transition information.
There is also no stated cross-progression path from the PC edition to console or from this alpha into the eventual console release. Treat your preview access and any in-game progress as separate from future ownership and progression until the publisher announces otherwise.
