If a game offers a PS5 upgrade for your PS4 license, open that game’s hub on a PS5, claim the offer, and download the PS5 version. A physical PS4 copy requires a PS5 with a disc drive, and the disc must stay inserted every time you play the installed PS5 digital version. A digital PS4 license can be upgraded from either PS5 model. Whether the upgrade is free, discounted, or unavailable is determined title by title by the offer currently shown on PlayStation Store.
What the PS4-to-PS5 upgrade actually gives you
A native PS5 upgrade is a separate PS5 version of a game, not merely the PS4 build running through backward compatibility. The PS5 version may be labeled as a remaster or next-generation edition by its publisher, while an ordinary compatible PS4 game remains the PS4 version even when played on PS5.
Sony describes the upgrade terms on the game’s PlayStation Store hub. Depending on the title, the PS5 version can be free, require a purchase, or be offered only for a limited period. Do not assume that a game with a PS4 copy automatically qualifies. The offer and price displayed after you sign in are the controlling information for your account and region.

Physical PS4 disc
- You need a PS5 console with a working disc drive. A PS4 Blu-ray disc cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition.
- The disc’s country or region must match the country or region of the PlayStation account you use.
- The disc is your license check. After the PS5 version is installed, you must insert that disc whenever you launch the PS5 digital version.
- The game’s hub must display an upgrade offer. Backward compatibility by itself does not create a remaster entitlement.
Digital PS4 license
- Sign in with the PlayStation account that owns the digital PS4 license.
- You can claim an eligible digital upgrade on either a PS5 with a disc drive or a PS5 Digital Edition.
- The upgrade may show as free, as a discounted purchase, or as unavailable, depending on the title’s current terms.
Licenses obtained through PlayStation Plus
A PS4 game redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit is not eligible for an upgrade unless Sony or the publisher specifically states that it is. A game you purchased separately is treated differently from a monthly or catalog entitlement, so check which license is attached to your account before troubleshooting the console.

Physical-disc upgrade: exact steps
- Sign in on the correct PS5 account. Use the account whose region matches the disc. If the game is tied to a purchased digital entitlement instead, use the account that owns that entitlement.
- Insert the PS4 disc. The PS5 normally begins installing the PS4 game. Allow the installation to finish and apply any update the console requests; the installed PS4 build is not yet the PS5 upgrade.
- Open the game’s hub. From the PS5 home screen, highlight the game and press X. The hub is where the current PS5 upgrade offer, price, and any time limit appear.
- Select the upgrade offer. Read the displayed terms. If the offer is free, the button will let you claim it without a charge. If it is discounted or otherwise paid, the hub shows the amount before you confirm.
- Choose Download or the purchase option. Complete the on-screen confirmation. The PS5 version is added to your Game Library and downloads to the console’s storage.
- Wait for the PS5 installation. A PS4 installation and a PS5 installation can both appear. Check the label before starting the game so you do not accidentally launch the older build.
- Keep the disc inserted for play. Once the download is complete, the disc remains the authentication key. Sony’s support wording is explicit: “After the download is complete, you can play the PS5 digital game by inserting the PS4 game disc. You need to keep the disc inserted each time to play the game.”
The disc does not need to be inserted only once. Removing it after installation causes the PS5 version to request the license again, so leave it in the drive whenever you plan to play.
Digital PS4 upgrade: exact steps
- Sign in to the purchasing account. A different user profile may be able to play a shared game on the console, but the upgrade offer is checked against the account that owns the PS4 license.
- Find the PS5 game. Open PlayStation Store or use Search on the PS5, then select the game’s PS5 listing or game hub.
- Review the offer. The hub identifies whether the upgrade is free, discounted, or not currently available. It also shows a deadline when the terms are time-limited.
- Choose Download or the displayed purchase option. Confirm the transaction if a charge applies. A free offer still requires you to claim it so the PS5 license is added to your account.
- Install from Game Library. Open Game Library, locate the game, and select Download. The PS5 installation then proceeds automatically.
- Start the PS5 build. No PS4 disc is needed for a digital license, but you must remain signed in to the account that owns the entitlement according to the console’s normal license checks.
How to tell which version is installed
Owning both versions can make the home screen confusing. Use the built-in selector instead of deleting files at random:
- Open Game Library.
- Highlight the game and press X.
- Select the ellipsis (…) menu.
- Choose the PS4 or PS5 version.
The PS4 build shows “PS4” beside its title. The PS5 build normally shows only the game title. Selecting the PS5 entry is the reliable way to launch the remaster when both installations are present.

Free, discounted, and time-limited offers

“Free” is therefore not a universal PS4-to-PS5 policy. It is a title-specific commercial term. A game may be fully playable on PS5 as a PS4 application while offering no native PS5 version at all.

Choosing the right PS5 hardware for a disc copy
If your starting point is a physical PS4 game, the direct fit is a PS5 model with an integrated disc drive. Sony lists a “PlayStation 5 Console – 1TB” disc model that plays PS4 and PS5 games on Blu-ray discs and also supports digital downloads. That combination lets you authenticate the original PS4 copy while still downloading a digital PS5 upgrade.
A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read the disc at all; Sony’s support guidance states that PS4 game discs cannot be used with that console. Buying a digital console while expecting to use a disc-based upgrade will leave the license unusable even if the game itself has an eligible offer.

Sony also documents a separately sold PS5 Disc Drive for compatible CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. Internet pairing is required during setup. Check the model group printed on your console and the drive’s compatibility list before buying; the accessory is not a universal add-on for every PS5 revision.

PS5 upgrade versus ordinary backward compatibility

The PS5 is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, but that broad compatibility statement does not promise a remaster. If the hub has no upgrade offer, the compatible PS4 build may be the only version available.
Troubleshooting a missing or unusable upgrade
The upgrade button is not visible
- Confirm that the specific title actually has an upgrade offer. Compatibility alone is not evidence of a remaster.
- For a disc, insert it before opening the hub. The console needs to read the license before it can show the disc-linked offer.
- For a digital copy, switch to the account that purchased the game and search for the PS5 listing from that account.
- Check the offer’s price and any deadline. A previous promotion may have ended or changed to a paid option.
The console says the disc cannot be used
- Verify that the PS5 has a disc drive. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 discs.
- Check that the disc’s country or region matches the PlayStation account region. A mismatch can prevent the offer from appearing.
- Inspect the disc for read problems and confirm that the console can install the PS4 game before attempting the upgrade.
The download finished, but the game still asks for the disc
For a physical upgrade, that behavior is expected. The PS4 disc remains the license check and must be inserted every time the PS5 digital version is played. Reinsert it, then start the PS5 entry from Game Library.

The PS4 version keeps launching
Open Game Library, highlight the game, press X, choose the ellipsis menu, and select the PS5 version. The “PS4” marker identifies the older build; the entry without that marker is the PS5 build.
The game installs but functions are missing or errors appear
Determine whether you launched the PS4 build through backward compatibility rather than a native PS5 upgrade. Some PS4 games can have missing functions or errors on PS5. If the title has a separate PS5 offer, install and select that version; if it does not, the compatibility behavior is the version currently available.

Check whether the game was redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit instead of purchased. Such licenses are excluded unless Sony specifically grants an exception for that title.

A practical decision path
- Identify the license: physical disc, purchased digital license, or PlayStation Plus entitlement.
- Match the hardware: use a disc-drive PS5 for a disc; either PS5 model works for a qualifying digital license.
- Match the region: for a disc, align the disc country or region with the account region.
- Check the hub: read the current offer instead of relying on a general list of games.
- Install the correct build: use the PS4/PS5 selector in Game Library.
- Apply the license rule: keep a physical disc inserted during every PS5 play session; a digital owner uses the purchasing account.
This sequence separates three issues that are often confused: whether the PS4 game runs on PS5, whether a distinct PS5 version exists, and whether your particular license qualifies for that version’s current offer.
What you need on the day of installation
- An eligible PS4 game and the matching PlayStation account.
- A PS5 with a disc drive if the game is on a disc.
- Internet access for the store check, upgrade download, and any required game update.
- Sufficient console storage for the PS5 installation in addition to any PS4 files you keep.
- The original disc available for every session if the entitlement is physical.
The console may first install the PS4 data from a disc and then download the PS5 package separately. That two-stage process is normal and does not mean the upgrade failed.
