To download an HTML page as a PNG, capture the page after a browser renders it. A PNG is a flat image of the rendered result—not editable HTML, a navigable offline copy, or the page’s source code. For a one-off capture, Firefox can save a viewport, full page, or individual element. For repeatable work, Playwright can save PNG files from scripts and CI jobs.
Choose the capture scope first: the viewport contains only what is visible, a full-page image includes content below the fold, and an element capture saves one component such as a chart or article card.
Choose the kind of PNG you need

A screenshot records pixels. It will not preserve links, selectable text, scripts, forms, or responsive behavior. If you need an offline webpage, save the HTML and its dependent assets instead; that is a different task.
Save a full page or element in Firefox
Firefox includes a full-page screenshot feature in Developer Tools. The labels below are Firefox’s documented interface names; minor placement can vary by installed version.

- Open the page you want to capture.
- Open Developer Tools (right-click the page and choose Inspect, or use your operating system’s Developer Tools shortcut).
- Open Developer Tools Settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Close Settings and click the screenshot camera icon in the Developer Tools toolbar. Firefox saves the image to your Downloads directory.
This produces a full-page PNG, including content below the current viewport. Review the result for repeated sticky headers, cookie dialogs, chat bubbles, or sections that were still loading.
Capture one element with “Screenshot Node”
- Open Developer Tools and select the Inspector tab.
- In the HTML pane, select the element you want.
- Open that element’s context menu.
- Choose Screenshot Node.
Firefox captures the selected node and its descendants rather than the whole page. This is useful for a logo, table, product card, chart, or article section.
Use Firefox’s screenshot command when a delay or selector is needed
Firefox also documents a :screenshot command with options for a delay, device-pixel ratio, filename, full-page capture, and CSS selector. A delay is useful when a hover state, menu, animation, or delayed font needs time to appear. A selector limits the shot to a matching element and its descendants. Because command syntax and Developer Tools details can change between Firefox releases, check the help shown by your installed version before relying on a scripted command.

Capture one locator

Return bytes for post-processing

Playwright’s command-line screenshot tool supports a URL, output filename, selectable image type, viewport capture, element capture, and --full-page. The default format is inferred from the filename extension and defaults to PNG. CLI options evolve, so use the help and current reference for the version installed in your project rather than copying an old command wholesale.
Make dynamic pages render before capture
A successful navigation does not prove that every image, font, advertisement, chart, or lazy-loaded section is ready. The following sequence is practical defensive automation, not a guarantee for every site:

- Navigate with an explicit timeout and a suitable wait condition.
- Wait for a meaningful selector, such as the article container or chart.
- Allow a short delay for animations, web fonts, or client-side rendering.
- Scroll through the page so lazy-loaded regions have an opportunity to load.
- Dismiss an overlay only when doing so is permitted and appropriate.
- Capture, then inspect the image for blank sections, missing fonts, or overlays.

Control quality, size, and appearance
Viewport and device scale
Set the viewport to match the device or design you are documenting. A larger device scale factor creates denser pixels but also increases image size. Keep viewport width, height, and scale consistent when comparing captures over time.

Responsive layouts
Changing width can move navigation, columns, and breakpoints. Record the viewport used with each image so a later capture is comparable.

Sticky headers and overlays
Full-page stitching can repeat a sticky header or leave a fixed chat widget over content. Hide or dismiss permitted overlays before capture, and consider an element capture when only the document body is needed.
PNG versus JPEG or WebP
PNG is lossless and appropriate for text, diagrams, and UI edges. JPEG is often smaller for photographic pages but introduces compression artifacts. WebP can reduce size further when your downstream system accepts it. The target here is PNG, so keep the .png extension or explicitly request PNG in the tool you use.
Troubleshoot blank, incomplete, or wrong screenshots

Does a PNG contain the original HTML?
No. It contains rendered pixels only. Save the source and assets separately if you need an editable or navigable copy.
Can I screenshot a page behind a login?
Only when you are authorized and provide the required session or credentials through the browser or service. A screenshot tool does not bypass access controls.
Why is my full-page image missing lazy-loaded content?
The page may load sections only after scrolling or an interaction. Scroll through the document, wait for the relevant selector or request, and then capture.
