For a few articles, use Safari Reading List and choose Save Offline. For a standalone copy of one page, use Safari’s Web Archive format. For a broader copy of linked pages, use GNU Wget from Terminal; it can retrieve pages recursively and convert links for local viewing, but it cannot promise a complete, working copy of every modern or restricted site.
These methods do different jobs: Reading List is for reading, Web Archive is for saving one page, and Wget is the option for a site mirror. Choose based on whether you need one article, a durable page file, or a group of linked pages.
Choose the right way to save a site
| Method | Use it for | What it saves | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safari Reading List | A few pages you want to read later | Reading List items saved for offline reading | It is not a complete website mirror. |
| Safari Web Archive | A local copy of one page | The page and graphics Safari can save | Links to other pages still depend on those destinations being available; some content may not save. |
| Safari Page Source | Inspecting or keeping a page’s HTML source | HTML source only | It does not package all of the page’s assets. |
| GNU Wget recursive retrieval | Saving a set of linked pages for local browsing | Pages retrieved recursively, with an option to convert links to local files | There is no guarantee of a complete or faithful copy of every site. |
For a simple reading copy, start with Reading List. Choose Web Archive if you need a file for one page. Use Wget only when you specifically need a larger linked-page copy and are comfortable with a command-line tool.
Save pages for offline reading in Safari
Safari Reading List is the easiest option when you want to come back to a small number of articles. Apple’s current Safari guide, version 27.0, documents offline saving for Reading List content.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Open the page in Safari.
- Add it to Reading List using Safari’s Share button or the Add control near the Smart Search field.
- Open Safari’s sidebar and select Reading List.
- Control-click the page summary and choose Save Offline.
Safari also provides an automatic-save setting for Reading List articles under its Advanced settings. The precise controls can vary by macOS and Safari version, so check Safari’s own Settings if you want future Reading List items saved without choosing Save Offline one by one.
Use this for reading, not for preserving a website. A saved Reading List page is not the same thing as a crawl of all pages linked from it, and it should not be treated as a navigable site backup.
Save one webpage as a file
To keep a local file for one page, open it in Safari and choose File > Save As. Select Web Archive when you want Safari to save the page together with graphics it can include. Choose Page Source only when you specifically want the HTML source rather than a more readable saved page.

What Web Archive preserves
Web Archive is the better of these two formats for a self-contained record of one page, but “self-contained” has limits. Apple says links work as long as their destination pages remain available; those destinations are not automatically turned into local copies. Apple also warns that some webpages may prevent saving items displayed on the page.
When Page Source is useful
Page Source keeps the HTML source. It is useful for technical inspection or for retaining the markup, but it is not a visual snapshot and does not include all supporting assets. If your goal is to reopen the page and read it, choose Web Archive instead.
Mirror linked pages with GNU Wget
GNU Wget is a free utility whose manual documents recursive retrieval and conversion of links in downloaded files so they point to local files for offline viewing. This is the broader site-copy route in this guide. It is an advanced method rather than a one-command guarantee: the result depends on the target site, its access restrictions, and the installed Wget version.

Run a basic recursive download
First confirm that GNU Wget is installed and available in Terminal. Then replace the example address with the page or site entry point you are allowed to copy:
wget --mirror --convert-links --adjust-extension --page-requisites --no-parent "https://example.com/section/"
The command asks Wget to mirror pages under the starting path, retrieve supporting page resources, and adjust links for local use. --no-parent helps keep recursion from climbing above the starting directory path. Use a narrow starting URL rather than a site’s home page if you only need one section.
Before relying on the result, read the manual for the Wget version installed on your Mac and check the site’s terms and access rules. This command is a starting point, not proof that every page, image, stylesheet, script, or linked destination will be saved correctly.

Open and check the downloaded copy
- Let Wget finish and note the directory in which Terminal ran the command; downloaded files are created relative to that location unless you specify otherwise.
- In Finder, open the resulting folder and locate the saved starting page or index file.
- Open the local page in a browser and test links, images, and the portions of the site you need.
- If links lead back to the live site, assets are missing, or pages fail to render, do not assume the mirror is complete. Check the Wget output and manual, narrow or adjust the requested scope, and try again only where the site permits retrieval.
What an offline copy can and cannot do
A downloaded page set is not necessarily an offline version of the original website. A simple saved page may rely on resources hosted elsewhere. A recursively retrieved copy may contain linked files but still miss content that is loaded dynamically, gated behind a login, blocked by the site, or otherwise unavailable to the downloader. The available GNU Wget documentation establishes recursive retrieval and local-link conversion, not perfect reproduction of every modern website.
- Need to read a few articles? Use Reading List and save those items offline.
- Need one page in a file? Save it as Web Archive, then verify the parts you need are present.
- Need several linked pages? Use Wget, begin with a restricted section, and inspect the output rather than assuming it is complete.
- Need a searchable, editable, or legally authoritative record? A browser-saved file may not meet that requirement; confirm the appropriate format and permissions before relying on it.
Common problems and fixes
Save Offline is missing
Make sure the item is in Safari’s Reading List and open the Reading List sidebar. Apple notes that some webpages may prevent saving items shown on the page. If Safari does not offer offline saving for the item, try Web Archive for a one-page copy or use another method permitted by the site.
The Web Archive opens, but a link needs the internet
That is expected when the destination page was not saved locally. Apple describes Web Archive as saving a page and graphics; links work while their destination pages remain available. Save destination pages separately if you need them offline, or use a recursive approach for a permitted set of linked pages.

The saved page is missing content
Some page elements may be blocked from saving, loaded from outside the page, or generated dynamically. Apple explicitly warns that some sites may prevent saving displayed items. For Wget, inspect its output and the installed manual; the documentation does not guarantee that every element of a particular site can be retrieved.
Wget reports errors or creates an incomplete mirror
Check that the address is correct, that the Mac has network access, and that the installed Wget supports the options in the command. Then check whether the site restricts automated retrieval or requires a login. Do not try to bypass access controls; use a site-provided export or obtain permission if needed. The reviewed documentation does not establish a universal fix for site-specific failures.
The local copy looks different from the live page
Offline files cannot be assumed to reproduce every interactive or dynamically loaded feature. Confirm whether the content you need is actually present in the retrieved files. If the goal is only a visual record of a page at a moment in time, a screenshot or PDF capture may fit better than a site mirror.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot or PDF record rather than a browsable offline website, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request capture API. It does not download a complete site for offline navigation. For a single-page capture, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download a website that requires a login?
The cited Wget documentation does not establish reliable copying of login-protected sites. Use a site-provided export or an authorized method, and do not try to bypass access controls.
Will an offline copy update when the website changes?
A saved copy is a local capture of retrieved content, not a live connection that automatically mirrors later changes. Save or retrieve the pages again when you need a newer copy.
