Open the saved file later from your computer to read it without an internet connection. On Android, tap More > Download, then open Chrome’s Downloads list. Google explicitly requires you to be online when creating the saved copy.
What Chrome downloads—and what it does not
Chrome’s built-in command saves a copy of the current page. It is not documented as a crawler that follows every link on an entire domain. The result may include page markup and locally saved resources, but it should be treated primarily as a snapshot for reading, not a complete mirror of a website.
- One page: the normal Save page as or Download command targets the page currently open.
- Offline reading: static text and assets may remain available after you disconnect.
- Dynamic services: forms that submit to a server, account sessions, live feeds, streaming media, and other network-dependent functions may stop working offline.
Save the page while connected. Google’s Chrome Help states: “You must be online to save a page.”
Save a webpage on desktop Chrome
- Connect to the internet and open the page you want to keep.
- Click the three-dot More menu in the top-right corner.
- Choose Cast, save, and share > Save page as….
- Choose a location and, if Chrome offers a file-type choice, select the format that suits your use.
- Click Save and wait for the download to finish.
- Disconnect from the internet and double-click the saved file to test it. Keep the associated resource folder beside the HTML file when Chrome creates one; moving only the HTML file can break local images, styles, or scripts.
Finding and removing the saved copy
Open the folder you selected and launch the file with Chrome or another compatible browser. To remove it, delete the saved file and its companion resource folder, if one exists. Deleting the local copy does not remove the original page from the web.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Choosing a save format
Chrome commonly offers an HTML-only option and a complete-page option. HTML-only is smaller but may omit images and styles. A complete-page save is more useful for visual reference, although scripts or server features can still require a connection. The exact options can vary by Chrome version and page.
Download a page on Android Chrome
- While online, open the page in Chrome for Android.
- Tap More (the three dots).
- Tap Download.
- When you want to read it offline, open More > Downloads and tap the saved page.
From the Downloads list you can read, delete, or share the saved item. When you are back online, using Reload opens the live version of the page rather than relying solely on the offline copy.
Where Android files go
Chrome’s Downloads screen is the dependable way to locate saved pages. The underlying storage location can differ by Android device and settings, so use the in-app list instead of assuming a particular folder path.
Reading list versus a downloaded page
Desktop Chrome’s Reading list is reached through More > Bookmarks and lists > Reading list; choose Add tab to reading list for the current tab. It is an organization feature for pages you plan to read later. Chrome’s Help documentation separately describes the explicit download workflow for creating an offline file. Therefore, use Reading list to track reading and Save page as… when you need a local copy you can open from storage.

Can Chrome download an entire website?
Not with the ordinary page-saving command. It saves the page you are viewing rather than recursively collecting every URL in a domain. To archive many pages, repeat the process for each page or use a purpose-built archiving workflow, subject to the site’s terms and your rights to copy its content.
Web Page Downloader extension
The Chrome Web Store listing for Web Page Downloader describes broader capture of HTML, images, CSS, JavaScript, and embedded documents for offline viewing. Those are the listing’s vendor claims, not a guarantee that every site or interactive feature will work offline. Before relying on an extension, check its current permissions, reviews, availability, and program terms; extension behavior can change.
Using MHTML for a single-file archive
For developer or extension workflows, Chrome’s official chrome.pageCapture API can save a tab as an MHTML archive. MHTML packages a page and captured resources into one file, which can be easier to move than an HTML file plus an asset folder.
Chrome documents an important restriction: “for security reasons a MHTML file can only be loaded from the file system and that it can only be loaded in the main frame.” In practice, open the file locally rather than expecting it to render from a web URL or inside an embedded frame.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
When MHTML is a better choice
- You need one archive file instead of a directory of assets.
- You are building a Chrome extension or developer tool around a captured tab.
- You can accept the file-system and main-frame loading restrictions.
What may fail offline
- Forms and search: submitting data normally sends a request to the site’s server.
- Logins: an expired session, authentication redirect, or protected API will not be recreated by a local snapshot.
- Live content: feeds, comments, stock or weather data, and similar updates need network access.
- Streaming and embedded services: a saved page may retain a player frame without retaining playable media.
- Client scripts: JavaScript can depend on APIs, cookies, cross-origin requests, or absolute URLs that are unavailable from a local file.
- Lazy-loaded assets: images or sections loaded only after scrolling or interaction may not be present unless they loaded before saving.
The official Chrome instructions guarantee that you can reopen the saved page, not that every interactive behavior will survive offline. Test an important archive in airplane mode before depending on it.
Choosing the right method
| Method | Best for | Storage | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop Save page as | One page on a computer | HTML file, sometimes with a resource folder | Not a whole-site crawler; dynamic features may need the network |
| Android Download | Reading one page on a phone or tablet | Chrome’s Downloads list | Must be created online; live features are not guaranteed offline |
| Reading list | Organizing pages for later reading | Reading-list entry | Distinct from the explicit downloaded-file workflow |
MHTML via chrome.pageCapture |
Developer-controlled, single-file archives | One MHTML file | Loads only from the file system and in the main frame |
| Complete-page extension | Broader resource collection | Depends on the extension | Permissions, availability, behavior, and terms can change |
Troubleshooting offline saves
“Save page as” is missing
Confirm that you are using desktop Chrome and open the three-dot menu. The command is under Cast, save, and share. If menus differ, update Chrome or use the menu’s search function; labels can change between versions.
The saved page is blank or incomplete
Reconnect and save again after the page finishes loading. Scroll through the page first to trigger lazy-loaded content, and try the complete-page option if available. A server-rendered or heavily scripted application may not support a faithful local copy.
Images or styles are missing
Keep the companion resource folder beside the HTML file and preserve both names. Moving or renaming the folder can break relative links. Saving again with a complete-page option may capture more assets.

- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
The Android page cannot be found
Open More > Downloads in Chrome rather than searching the general file manager. If it is absent, check whether the download completed and save it again while online.
The page opens but buttons do nothing
That is expected for controls that call a remote server, require a login, or depend on live APIs. A local snapshot preserves content, not the site’s backend.
An MHTML file will not display in an iframe
Open it directly from the file system in the main frame. Chrome documents that MHTML is restricted to those loading conditions for security reasons.

- For important records, retain the original URL and capture date alongside the local copy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chrome save a whole website with one click?
No. The built-in command saves the page currently open; it is not documented as a crawler for every page in a domain.
Can I save a page without internet access?
No. Chrome’s official instructions require an online connection when creating the saved copy.
Will a saved login remain usable offline?
There is no guarantee. Authentication, server requests, and session checks generally require the site’s backend.
Why use MHTML instead of HTML?
MHTML puts a captured tab and its resources in one archive file, but Chrome restricts loading it to the local file system and the main frame.
