For one page, use your browser’s Save Page As command and choose a complete-page format. In Firefox, that is Web page, complete; it saves the HTML plus pictures and supporting files in a companion folder. For several linked pages, use HTTrack. For repeatable terminal work, use GNU Wget to fetch an HTML document and its requisites. Always reopen the downloaded copy and check the images: JavaScript-generated and lazy-loaded assets may not be present.
Choose the method that matches your goal
| Goal | Best method | What it preserves | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save one page for offline reading | Browser complete-page save | HTML, pictures and supporting files | Interactive behavior and some links may not work offline |
| Copy a group of linked pages | HTTrack | Discovered pages and resources, with links rewritten for local browsing | Does not execute JavaScript, so runtime-created URLs can be missed |
| Automate a page download | GNU Wget | HTML and page requisites, with optional local-link conversion | Only resources discoverable from fetched documents are available |
| Capture a rendered, clean screenshot or PDF | ScreenshotNeo | Rendered output after browser automation | It captures an image or PDF, not an editable offline website |
Method 1: Save one webpage with its pictures in a browser
This is the simplest choice when you need one article, reference page or receipt available without an internet connection.
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Open the browser menu and select Save Page As.
- In the file-type menu, choose Web page, complete.
- Save the file in a folder you can find. Firefox creates the HTML file and a companion directory containing pictures and other supporting files.
- Disconnect from the network, open the saved HTML file, and inspect every important image.
Do not choose HTML only if pictures matter. That format saves the original page without the image files. Browser labels differ by operating system and version, but the Firefox distinction is explicit: the complete format is intended to save the whole page along with pictures.
What the browser copy can and cannot retain
- Images referenced by the page and available when the save occurs are usually copied into the companion folder.
- The original HTML link structure may not be retained exactly, so test links before treating the copy as an archive.
- Live search, log-in sessions, video players, comments, forms and other server-backed features generally will not become offline applications.
- Images loaded only after scrolling or after JavaScript runs may be absent. Scroll through the page first, wait for visible images, then save again if necessary.
Saving one image rather than the whole page
For a single picture, right-click it (or Ctrl-click on macOS) and choose Save Image As. This avoids copying the surrounding HTML and is preferable when you only need an image file.

Method 2: Mirror linked pages with HTTrack
Use HTTrack when “the webpage” really means a set of pages that should browse locally. HTTrack copies pages within a configured scope and rewrites retained links for offline navigation. Its command-line guide gives this starting form:
httrack https://example.com/ --path mydir
The documented default behavior stays on the starting host, follows links within that scope, and obeys robots.txt. Treat those defaults as a starting point, not a reason to run an unlimited crawl.
A safer mirroring procedure
- Install the HTTrack interface appropriate to your system: Windows, Linux/Unix, Android or the command-line program.
- Start with the exact site or directory you are authorized to copy.
- Set a narrow scope (same address or same domain) and add filters when only selected paths are wanted.
- Choose a reasonable crawl pace and retain the project cache.
- Run the mirror and watch the progress for redirects, refusals and unexpectedly broad navigation.
- Open the generated local index and test representative pages and images.
- Review
hts-log.txtandhts-err.txt; these files identify URLs that were refused, redirected or filtered.
The JavaScript and lazy-loading boundary
HTTrack parses HTML and CSS but does not run JavaScript. If a script creates an image URL only at runtime, the crawler cannot discover that URL from static source. This is why a modern page can look complete in a browser yet have missing images in a mirror. More aggressive parsing can help with awkward formatting of links already present in source; it cannot invent links that exist only after script execution.
Resume and update an interrupted project
Keep the project directory and cache. HTTrack can continue an interrupted transfer and update an existing mirror from its cached state. Starting a new project at the same location can discard the information needed for an efficient resume.

Method 3: Download a page and its requisites with GNU Wget
GNU Wget is useful for scripts, scheduled jobs and repeatable downloads. Its manual describes fetching a single HTML page together with requisites, converting links for local viewing, and avoiding recursive crawling when you only need one document.
A commonly used pattern is:
wget --page-requisites --convert-links --adjust-extension --no-parent https://example.com/page
Option names and behavior can vary between Wget builds. Confirm the syntax against the GNU Wget manual for the version installed on your machine, especially before putting the command in a production script.
Verify the Wget result
- Check that an HTML file and an asset directory were created.
- Open the HTML file from disk rather than the original URL.
- Inspect the terminal output for failed requests and redirects.
- Remember that Wget fetches resources it can identify from the documents it downloads; it does not reproduce a page’s running JavaScript application.
Why “complete” downloads still miss images
- Lazy loading: the page may request an image only when it enters the viewport. Scroll through the page and save again, or use a rendered capture.
- Runtime URLs: JavaScript may construct the final URL after the initial HTML arrives. Static crawlers cannot see that URL.
- Access controls: an image may require cookies, a login, a signed URL or an authorization header that the downloader does not have.
- Blocked or failed requests: the original page may display a placeholder when an image server refuses a request.
- CSS backgrounds: a visual may be declared in a stylesheet rather than an
<img>element; check downloaded CSS and the browser’s offline rendering.
Troubleshooting checklist
Images are completely missing from a browser save
Confirm that Web page, complete, not HTML only, was selected. Keep the HTML file beside its companion asset folder; moving only the HTML file breaks relative paths. Reopen the file while offline and check the folder for image files.
Only some images are missing
Scroll until every image is visible before saving. If the missing assets appear only after interaction, they are likely script-generated or protected by an application session. A static browser save, HTTrack project or Wget run may not reproduce them.

HTTrack downloaded too many or too few pages
Review the project’s scope, travel mode and filters. Same-address scope is narrower than same-domain scope; broader settings can follow navigation into sections you did not intend to copy. Narrow the starting URL and run a new project when the existing cache reflects the wrong scope.
HTTrack reports refused, redirected or filtered URLs
Open hts-log.txt and hts-err.txt. Determine whether the URL was excluded by your filter, redirected elsewhere, refused by the server or failed during transfer. Correct only the relevant setting and rerun; do not remove all limits to compensate.
An interrupted mirror is incomplete
Use HTTrack’s continue or update operation on the original project so its cache can be reused. Starting over may repeat every request and lose the project’s prior state.
The local page opens, but links or forms do not work
Offline copies are documents, not a replacement server. Link rewriting can make retained pages navigable, but log-ins, submissions, search, video streams and API calls still depend on the original service.

Or skip the browser setup
If your actual deliverable is a rendered screenshot or PDF rather than a browsable folder, ScreenshotNeo makes one GET request to capture the page. It accepts consent banners like a visitor, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and lets you turn those cleanup steps off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options. A basic cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Options for rendered captures
ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PNG/JPEG/WebP and PDF output. You can supply paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges for PDFs; inject custom CSS or JavaScript; click an element; hide selectors; wait for a selector, delay or network idle; block ads, trackers, requests or resource types; send headers, cookies, a user agent or Authorization; set timezone and geolocation; use transparent backgrounds; resize images; choose a cache TTL; create signed links for public <img> tags; submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks; capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call; query usage; and use the OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migration. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to begin.

Use downloads responsibly
Limit crawls to pages you are authorized to copy, use a bounded scope and choose a considerate pace. HTTrack’s documented crawler identifies itself as HTTrack, obeys robots.txt and sends a Referer, but those behaviors do not grant permission to reproduce content. Copyright, terms of service, privacy rules and other rights depend on the material and your jurisdiction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save a webpage as one file with no separate image folder?
A browser’s complete-page save normally creates an HTML file plus a companion folder. A single screenshot or PDF is one file, but it is not an editable offline webpage.
Will downloading a page preserve its videos and interactive controls?
Usually not. Browser saves, HTTrack and Wget copy documents and discoverable resources; server-backed features and script-driven behavior generally still require the original site.
How do I download an entire website instead of one page?
Use HTTrack with an explicitly bounded scope, filters and a retained project cache. Review its log and error files before treating the mirror as complete.
