Let the download and installation finish before disconnecting. The update applies to the installed game software, not to the cartridge itself.
Update the game while you have internet
- Connect your Nintendo Switch 2 to the internet.
- On the HOME Menu, highlight the icon for the game card game. Do not launch the game.
- Press + or − on the controller.
- Select Software Update, then Via the Internet.
- Wait for the download and installation to complete before taking the console offline.
Nintendo Support says that when an update is available and the console is online, the system prompts you to download it upon starting the game or application. You can also enable automatic software updates, but those require an internet connection as well. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 software update instructions.

Which update route can you use?

Use local wireless if you cannot get online
Nintendo also documents Match Version with Local Users, which shares compatible update data over local wireless. Both consoles must have the latest system update. Select the same software on each console, create or join a local group, and have the group creator start the session. The participating software is updated to match the most recent version available in that group.
This method needs another prepared console with the relevant version available locally. It is not a way for your console to download update data from Nintendo’s servers without internet. Follow Nintendo’s local-user update instructions for the group procedure.

Check whether you have a game card or a game-key card
A regular game card and a game-key card work differently. A game-key card does not contain the full game: you must download the game data over the internet before you can play. Nintendo also requires an internet connection for the game’s first launch; later launches can be offline with the game-key card inserted. That full-game download is separate from updating software already installed from a regular game card. See Nintendo’s game-key card overview.

After the update finishes, start the game while you still have internet access to confirm it opens as expected. An update does not guarantee that every feature will work offline: online multiplayer, cloud services, first-launch checks, or requirements specific to a game may still need a connection.

If the download cannot proceed because there is not enough space, Nintendo identifies system memory and a microSD Express card as possible storage locations for game-key-card downloads. A microSD Express card is the required microSD format for Switch 2. Additional storage is only relevant if you need more room; it is not a required part of the update steps. Check the card’s compatibility and capacity before buying. Nintendo’s Switch 2 system update history lists system software version 23.0.0, released September 9, 2026; that is the console’s system version, not the update version for any particular game. Check each title through its own software update menu.
