The browser normally saves the file in its Downloads folder. If the link opens the file instead, right-click (or Control-click on a Mac) and choose Save link as, select a folder and filename, then open the completed download from the browser’s Downloads list.
Download an ordinary file
- Open the webpage containing the file link.
- Click the link labeled with the filename or an action such as Download. The browser starts the transfer.
- Watch the download indicator or tray until it reports completion.
- Open the browser’s Downloads list and select the file, or open it from the folder where it was saved.
In Chrome, you can also right-click the link and choose Save as. Select a destination, change the filename if needed, and click Save. This is useful when a normal click opens the file in a browser tab or when you want a specific folder.
Save different kinds of files
Images
Right-click the image and choose Save image as. Pick a folder and preserve the extension (such as .jpg, .png or .webp) unless you have a reason to rename it. If you right-click a thumbnail rather than the full image, you may save the small preview; open the image first when you need its original size.
PDF documents
Right-click the PDF link and choose Save link as. If the PDF is already open in a browser viewer, use the viewer’s download button (usually a downward arrow) or press Ctrl+S on Windows/Linux or Command+S on macOS. Chrome can either display PDFs in its viewer or download them automatically, depending on its PDF setting.

Web pages
To keep a local copy of the page itself in Chrome, choose More (the three-dot menu) → More tools → Save page as. Choose Webpage, Complete if you want associated images and styles saved in a folder alongside the HTML file. A saved page may not behave exactly like the live site.
Files that open as text or media
Browsers display many file types inline—PDFs, images, audio, video and text—rather than downloading them. Use Save link as on the original link, or use the viewer’s download control. If a file that should download appears as readable text, the server may be sending an incorrect MIME (content) type; try saving the link instead of the displayed content.
Browser-specific instructions
Chrome on Windows, macOS and Linux
- Click the link, or right-click it and choose Save as.
- If Chrome asks for a location, select a folder and click Save.
- Open the three-dot menu → Downloads (or press Ctrl+J; on Mac use Command+Shift+J) to open, show or manage the file.
To choose a destination every time, open Settings → Downloads and enable Ask where to save each file before downloading. The same page shows the current download location.
Firefox
Click the link, or right-click and choose Save Link As…. Open the Downloads panel from the toolbar. Firefox can open the file, show it in its containing folder, return to the source page, copy the link, delete the file, or remove only its entry from download history. Firefox’s handling is influenced by the server’s MIME type and your configured application for that type.

Safari on Mac
Click a download link. For an image or another linked object, Control-click it and choose Download Linked File. Safari places completed items in its configured Downloads folder; use Safari’s download button to reveal recent items.
Find a file after it downloads
Start with the browser’s Downloads list: it normally offers Show in folder (or an equivalent command). If you cannot find the list, check the default Downloads folder in your operating system:
- Windows: File Explorer → Downloads under your user profile.
- macOS: Finder → Downloads.
- Linux: your file manager’s Downloads directory, usually inside your home folder.
The exact location can differ if you changed browser settings, used Save as, or your organization redirects downloads. Search your computer for the filename, then sort results by date if necessary.
When clicking opens the file instead of downloading
Opening is normal when the browser can render the file inline. Right-click the link and choose Save link as; do not use Save page as, which saves the surrounding webpage. For a PDF or media viewer, use its download icon. If no download option appears, the site may require you to sign in, may generate the file only after a form is submitted, or may intentionally prevent direct downloads.

The server’s Content-Type and related response headers tell the browser how to handle the response. A misconfigured type can cause a download to display as text or trigger an unsuitable application. You can report that problem to the site owner; saving the link is the practical workaround when available.
Downloads that fail or are blocked
The transfer never starts
- Confirm that the link is a real file link and not a button requiring a login, payment or form submission.
- Reload the page and try again, or open the link in a private window after signing in.
- Check that the browser is not waiting for permission in a blocked-pop-up or download notification.
The download stops or reports an error
- Check free disk space on the destination drive.
- Choose a folder where your account has write permission, such as your own Downloads folder.
- Retry on a stable connection and avoid closing the browser until it completes.
- Check the browser’s Downloads settings for a changed folder, automatic cleanup or a prompt hidden behind another window.
The browser warns about the file
Do not bypass a warning merely to obtain a file. Chrome advises saving executable files only when you trust the source. Firefox includes protection against malicious or potentially harmful downloads. Verify the domain, expected filename and file extension; ask the sender for a new link if anything is unexpected.
The downloaded file will not open
Check that the transfer finished and that the extension matches the format you expected. A file ending in .exe, .msi, .dmg, .pkg or a script extension can run code; scan it with your security software and open it only when you trust the source. If the file is corrupt, download it again rather than renaming it to a different extension.
Choose a filename and destination deliberately
Use Save as when you need predictable organization—for example, Invoices/2026/September or a project’s asset folder. Keep the original extension so the operating system can associate the correct application. If a site supplies a generic name such as download, add a descriptive name while retaining the extension. Avoid characters your operating system rejects, including / : * ? " < > | on Windows.

For repeated work, enable Chrome’s “ask where to save” option or set a dedicated folder in your browser’s Downloads settings. Remember that a browser’s history entry is not the file itself: deleting download history does not necessarily delete the saved file, and deleting the file does not always remove its history entry.
What the link is doing technically
A webpage usually uses an HTML anchor element such as <a href="/reports/report.pdf">Download report</a>. The optional download attribute can suggest that the browser download the resource and can provide a suggested filename. The server can still influence behavior with response headers and MIME type, and a cross-origin server may impose restrictions. These controls explain why two links that look identical can behave differently.

Can I download a file without opening it?
Yes. Right-click the link and choose Save link as (or Save as in Chrome), select a destination, and save it directly.

Does deleting download history delete the file?
No. History and the saved file are separate; remove the file from its folder if you also want it deleted.
