If a delisted game is still licensed to your Steam account, open Steam, sign in to that account, and install it from your Library. A game being removed from sale does not, by itself, remove an existing owner’s download: Valve says retired games remain in players’ libraries and can still be downloaded, installed, and launched. That policy does not guarantee that every edition, operating system, multiplayer server, or account will still work, so follow the steps below to distinguish a delisting from an account, file, or game-specific problem.

What does “delisted” mean for a game you already own?

Valve calls a game removed from sale “retired.” Its Steamworks retirement FAQ says: “Retired games will remain in players’ Steam libraries. Those players will continue to be able to download, install, and launch the game.” In ordinary cases, removing the store purchase option is different from removing an existing account’s access. Valve’s FAQ was accessed October 30, 2026.

That is a general policy, not a promise about every game or every circumstance. Steam access is tied to a user’s account and governed by Valve’s Subscriber Agreement; the agreement describes licensed, account-linked access rather than ownership of a transferable copy of the underlying game. A publisher may also have made online functionality dependent on servers or authentication services that are no longer operating. Being able to download a title does not prove that its multiplayer or other online features still work.

Keep three questions separate: does the account have the game’s entitlement, can Steam deliver the files for the device you want to use, and can the game still run with its required services? Finding the title in your Library addresses the first question, but not necessarily the other two.

“Delisted” usually describes the store’s purchase status, not the state of every owner’s Library. Valve also advises publishers retiring a product to consider whether players rely on online servers or other functionality. In practice, you may be able to install a game but find that matchmaking, account authentication, leaderboards, or another server-dependent feature no longer works. Conversely, a game with no such dependency may still launch locally. Check the specific title’s current requirements and error messages rather than treating the store page as a complete status report.

There is no useful universal percentage for how often retired games remain installable. The dependable starting point is Valve’s stated policy and the entitlement on your own account. A specific package, edition, platform, or publisher arrangement can still affect what Steam can deliver.

How do you install the game from your Steam Library?

Use the account that bought or activated the game, then install it from Library. You do not need a currently available Buy button or a special third-party downloader when the game is already in that account’s Library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to the right account. Open the Steam client and sign in to the account where the game was purchased or activated. If you use more than one account, check each one; Steam Support identifies being signed into the wrong account as a likely reason a previously owned game is missing.
  2. Open Library and find the title. Look in your Library rather than relying on whether the store page offers a purchase. If the game is listed but uninstalled, select it and start installation.
  3. Choose a Steam library location. Select an available library folder when Steam prompts you. Let Steam download and install the files, then launch the game from the Library.
  4. Check the actual result. If the game installs but will not launch, note the error and whether it occurs before or after any sign-in or online-service prompt. A download completing does not establish that a game’s servers, authentication, or operating-system support are still available.

Valve’s retirement guidance says owners retain the ability to download and install retired titles. It also asks publishers to consider dependent server functionality when retiring a product, so a working installation and working online features are separate outcomes.

If you have more than one Steam account, make a note of which one you are checking before changing folders or reinstalling anything. A game entitlement does not automatically move between accounts, and a shortcut in another account’s Library does not change that. If the game was activated with a key, the key must have been redeemed on the account you are using for the Library install.

When Steam asks where to install, choose a location that has enough free space and is one of the Steam library folders shown by the client. If the title is large, the download may take time even if it is no longer sold. The fact that a store page has no purchase option does not necessarily mean Steam has stopped delivering its existing game files.

What should you check if the game is missing from Library?

A missing Library entry is not proof that delisting removed your entitlement. Check account and Library organization issues before treating it as an unavailable download.

Confirm the account and Library filters

  • Verify that you are signed in to the account that bought or activated the game. A game purchased on another account will not become part of the current account’s entitlement just because the same person uses both accounts.
  • Check the Library’s search and filters. A filter can make a title harder to find without changing whether it is in the account.
  • Open View > Hidden Games. If the title appears there, right-click it and choose Manage > Remove from Hidden to return it to the regular Library view.

Steam’s Library visibility FAQ distinguishes hidden games from private games. Hiding changes how you organize your own Library; marking a game private hides ownership from other users while leaving it visible to you. Neither setting supplies an entitlement that the account does not have.

Try removing restrictive Library filters before deciding that the game has disappeared. If you use categories or collections, switch back to the full Library view and search the title there. Hidden Games is a separate view, so a title hidden from the normal list may not show up in an ordinary search or collection.

Distinguish a missing entitlement from a missing install

A Library entry marked uninstalled means Steam recognizes the game but does not currently recognize an installation in the selected library. That is different from a title that does not appear as owned on the account. If it is absent after checking accounts, filters, and Hidden Games, the issue may be account entitlement rather than the store retirement itself.

Do not assume buying a key advertised as unused is the standard solution. Valve’s retirement guidance also advises publishers to retire Steam-key sales through other retailers. A key may be unavailable, invalid, or not equivalent to an entitlement already attached to your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the symptoms to choose the next step: if the title appears in the Library as uninstalled, start an ordinary Steam installation; if it is in Hidden Games, unhide it first; if files are present but Steam says uninstalled, let the client check those files; if the title is absent entirely, verify which account redeemed or bought it. These are different situations, and repeatedly changing download settings will not fix an account that has no entitlement.

If you believe the game should be on the account but cannot find it after checking the likely accounts and Library views, contact Steam Support through the account that may hold the purchase. Keep any purchase or activation information available. Avoid sharing account credentials or buying another person’s account as a workaround; access is account-linked, and accounts are not a transferable replacement for a missing entitlement.

How can Steam recognize game files already on your computer?

If the game files are already on a drive, keep them in a Steam library folder and start the installation from the Library. Steam may recognize existing files rather than downloading everything again, but local files are not a substitute for the account entitlement.

  1. Locate the existing files. Identify the Steam library folder that contains the game’s files. Avoid moving, renaming, or deleting the files while Steam is checking the installation.
  2. Make sure Steam knows the library location. If the files are in another existing Steam library, add that library through Steam’s current storage or library settings. Menu labels can vary by client version: Steam’s older support instructions use Downloads > Steam Library Folders, while its game-moving instructions use Settings > Storage.
  3. Start installation from Library. Select the entitled game and choose an install location that corresponds to the library containing the files. Steam can then check for game data it can use.
  4. Allow Steam to finish checking or downloading. If it still downloads files, that does not mean the title was removed because it is delisted; some files may be missing, incomplete, or not recognized as a usable installation.

Steam Support’s instructions for getting Steam to recognize installed game files cover this situation. By contrast, choosing Add a Non-Steam Game adds a shortcut to the Library; it does not grant the Steam license, provide Steam downloads or updates, or prove ownership.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This route is useful when you have copied a Steam library from another drive or kept the game’s files after removing it from the client. It does not guarantee that every file is complete or current. Let Steam finish its check before launching, and do not interrupt it by deleting files that appear unfamiliar. If Steam cannot use the local data, it may need to download missing or changed files from its servers.

Local files and a Steam backup are not identical. A folder copied by hand may contain useful game data, but it may lack files Steam expects, while a backup made through Steam follows its documented backup-and-restore process. Neither local files nor a Library shortcut create ownership. If Steam does not recognize the entitlement, the correct next step is to confirm the account—not to add the executable as a non-Steam game and assume the license has been recovered.

What should you do if installation fails?

Read the error and troubleshoot the reported installation problem instead of assuming that delisting caused it. Steam Support lists routine client and library remedies, but none can create game files or platform support that are no longer available.

  1. Restart Steam or the computer. Retry the installation after restarting, especially if a download or client update was interrupted.
  2. Clear the download cache. In Steam’s settings, use the download-cache option and sign in again if prompted. This can address some client download problems; it does not restore an entitlement or missing game content.
  3. Repair the library folder. Use Steam’s storage or library settings to repair the folder where you are installing the game. The exact settings layout can vary between client versions.
  4. Verify installed files. If Steam shows the game as installed, use its installed-file verification option from the game’s Properties. This checks the installation against files Steam can provide.
  5. Try another download region. If a download stalls or errors, choose another region in Steam’s download settings and retry.

These are the basic remedies in Steam Support’s download and installation troubleshooting guide. Uninstalling Steam itself is not a safe first step: Steam warns that uninstalling the client deletes installed game content. Preserve files or backups before taking any action that removes the client or a library folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Work from the least destructive options first. Restart the client, check the selected library folder, and review the error text before removing files or reinstalling Steam. Clearing a download cache is a client troubleshooting step; it is not a way to reacquire a purchase, bypass a platform limitation, or recover a game’s server. Likewise, verifying files can repair an installation only to the extent that Steam has files available to compare or redownload.

If Steam shows an error that indicates the game is unavailable for your operating system, separate that from an ordinary download interruption. Changing regions or repairing a folder may help a client or storage issue, but it cannot add operating-system-specific content the game does not provide. If the error points to a publisher’s login or server, a successful local install may still not resolve the service failure.

Why might an owned game fail to download on one operating system?

A game can be in your Library yet lack downloadable content for the operating system you are using. Steamworks explains that a package without a suitable operating-system depot may not deliver content for that OS. Clearing a cache or entering a console command cannot create a missing depot.

If the title is owned but Steam will not offer an install for your platform, treat that as a game-specific configuration question rather than assuming the delisting removed the license. The relevant facts are the game’s supported platforms and whether its Steam configuration includes content for the OS you want. Valve’s Steamworks depot documentation describes how operating-system-specific content is organized; it does not establish the configuration of any particular game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is why “I own it” and “Steam can install it on this computer” are related but separate statements. The account may retain an entitlement while the available package lacks a depot for the current OS. Check the game’s listed platform support and the installation options Steam actually presents. Do not rely on a universal console command or unofficial depot downloader to manufacture files or bypass the game’s configuration.

Can you preserve a game you have already installed?

Steam’s backup feature can make a copy of an installed game’s files for later restoration. It is a preservation option, not a requirement for reinstalling a title that remains downloadable from your Library.

  1. In Library, right-click the installed game and open Properties.
  2. Select Installed Files > Backup game files.
  3. Follow the backup prompts and keep the resulting copies somewhere you can find them.
  4. To restore a backup, choose Steam > Restore Game Backup and follow the prompts.

Steam documents this process in its game backup and restore instructions. The feature does not work for many games that use third-party downloaders or MMO-style launchers. Treat saves and custom content as separate files to preserve; Steam Cloud support and the files it synchronizes vary by game.

A separate storage drive can hold backup copies, but that is different from installing Steam games to an external hard drive. Steam’s guidance on moving game installations discourages installing games to an external drive; the backup procedure, by contrast, lets you move or burn backup copies. Keep that distinction in mind when choosing where to store a preservation copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An external USB storage drive for Steam game backups is an optional place to retain copies of the backup files. It is not needed to reinstall a delisted game that Steam still offers in your Library, and it is not a guarantee that the game will run on a future computer. Think of it as storage for a preservation copy, not as a special Steam installation device. Before relying on a backup, confirm that it completed and that you know where its files are stored.

Backups also have limits. A Steam game backup is not necessarily a complete archive of saved progress, screenshots, mods, custom content, or third-party launcher data. Keep separate copies of anything you cannot replace, and check whether Steam Cloud is enabled for the title rather than assuming every save is synchronized. Since Cloud behavior varies by game, confirm the files you care about are actually present in the location you intend to preserve.

Which installation route fits your situation?

Choose the route based on what Steam and your computer currently have, rather than on the fact that a store page no longer sells the game. These routes answer different questions: a fresh Library install uses the account entitlement and current downloadable files; recognition of existing files may avoid downloading data already present; and a Steam backup can restore a compatible copy you made earlier. None fixes a missing account entitlement or supplies a game’s unavailable platform content.

What you find Best next step What it can resolve What it cannot establish
The entitled game appears as uninstalled Install it from Library to a Steam library folder A standard fresh installation Whether online services or every platform will work
The game is in Hidden Games Use Manage > Remove from Hidden, then install from Library A hidden Library entry An entitlement missing from the account
Game files already exist in a Steam library Add the library location if needed, then start installation from Library Steam’s recognition of existing files A Steam license or missing files that are not available
A Steam backup exists Use Steam > Restore Game Backup Restoring a compatible backup of game files Separate saves, custom content, or compatibility with every game
The title is owned but unavailable for your OS Check the game’s platform-specific support and depot configuration Identifying a possible platform-content limitation Creating a depot or download that the game does not provide
The game installs but a multiplayer or login feature fails Check whether the title depends on an operating server or authentication service Separating a local install from an online-service issue Restoring a server or service the publisher no longer operates

A practical decision path is: first confirm the account, then see whether the title appears in Library; next check hidden games and filters; then decide whether Steam should fetch a fresh install or recognize files already in a library; finally assess OS support and online dependencies if the install or launch still fails. If you have a compatible backup, restoration is another option, but it does not replace the first account check.

The central distinction is whether Steam recognizes an entitlement on the current account. If it does, a retired store listing does not by itself prevent installation; if it does not, changing local files or adding a shortcut will not turn that account into the owner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Steam give notice before a game is retired?

Valve’s retirement guidance asks publishers retiring free-to-play games to provide 90 days’ notice. That is a requested notice period for that category, not a guarantee that every game will receive advance notice.

Are my save files included in a Steam game backup?

Do not assume they are. Save data and custom content may need separate copies, and whether Steam Cloud synchronizes a game’s files depends on that game.

Can I restore a Steam game backup from a USB drive?

Steam’s documented backup process lets you move or burn backup copies and then restore them through the Steam client. Use the drive to store the backup files; Steam separately discourages installing game files to an external hard drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I have to buy a delisted game again if I already own it?

Ordinarily, no. Valve says retired games remain in existing owners’ Steam libraries and can still be downloaded and installed. First confirm that you are signed into the account that bought or activated the title.

Does adding a game with Add a Non-Steam Game restore my ownership?

No. It adds a shortcut to the Library; it does not grant a Steam entitlement or provide Steam downloads and updates.

Can I still play a delisted game online after reinstalling it?

Not necessarily. Installation does not prove that multiplayer servers, authentication, or other online services still operate. That depends on the specific game and the services it requires.

Why does Steam show a game I own but not let me install it on this operating system?

The game’s Steam package may not include a suitable depot for that operating system. Check the title’s platform support; clearing the cache or using a console command cannot create content the game does not provide.

The Bottom Line

If you already own the game, sign in to the account that holds the entitlement and look for it in Steam Library—not for a Buy button. Check filters and Hidden Games if it is missing, then use Steam’s install flow to recognize existing files or restore a compatible backup if you have one. A delisting alone does not remove an existing owner’s download, but account entitlement, operating-system depots, saves, and online services are separate issues.
