If you restore an iPhone using a computer, Apple says the restore erases the device and installs the latest software—not a version you select. Back up first, and check that your backup can be restored to the iOS version on the device.
Can you downgrade iOS after an update?
Apple’s published support guidance does not provide steps for going back to a previous iOS version. It describes restoring the device to the latest software instead. That is the supported recovery route in Apple’s documentation; it does not establish that every technical method of changing iOS is impossible, nor does it confirm which older releases may be installable on a particular iPhone.

Apple notes that error 1015 or a message saying a required resource can’t be found may occur when someone is trying to install an earlier iOS version. Its guidance is to use recovery mode to restore the latest software. See Apple’s iOS update and restore error guidance.
Why a computer restore is not a downgrade
A factory restore using a computer erases the iPhone and installs the latest iOS software. It is a recovery option for a device that needs to be restored, not a version selector. Apple’s instructions are at Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings using a computer.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Before restoring, protect your data
- Back up the iPhone. Apple advises creating a backup before a computer restore because the restore erases the device. Follow Apple’s computer restore instructions.
- Check backup compatibility. A backup may require a newer iOS or iPadOS version than the device is currently running. If so, the device must be updated before that backup can be restored. Apple explains this situation in its guidance for backups that need a newer version of iOS or iPadOS.
- Know what a backup restores. Apple’s iPhone guide covers restoring content from a backup: Restore all content to iPhone from a backup.
If an update or restore fails
For error 1015 or a missing-required-resource message when attempting to install an earlier iOS version, Apple directs users to recovery mode and restoration to the latest software. Follow the current steps in Apple’s update and restore error guide. A computer restore erases the device, so complete the backup checks above before proceeding.
Check the USB connection for certain errors
For certain USB-related update or restore errors, Apple recommends checking the cable and using the cable supplied with the device or another Apple-certified cable. See Apple’s troubleshooting guidance. A different cable may help with a connection problem, but it does not change the iOS version installed by Apple’s restore process.
