To diversify a portfolio concentrated in AI stocks, first measure how much of your money depends on those companies—including exposure held indirectly through funds—then choose a broader mix of investments that fits your goals, time horizon, and ability to tolerate losses. There is no universal AI-stock allocation or stock/bond/cash mix that suits every investor.

Map your direct and fund-held exposure

Start with an inventory of every individual stock and fund in the portfolio. Record each position’s value and its share of the total. For a fund, look through to its underlying holdings: several ETFs or mutual funds may own many of the same large technology companies, so owning more fund tickers does not necessarily mean owning more independent investments.

Compare each fund’s largest holdings and its investment focus. A narrowly focused technology or industry fund may add exposure to the same area rather than broaden it. The SEC advises investors to check a fund’s top holdings to see whether funds differ and provide the diversification they want in its guide to diversifying investments.

Choose what kind of diversification you need

Broaden within stocks

Within the stock portion of a portfolio, consider whether exposure is spread across companies, industries, company sizes, and geographies—or remains dependent on a few issuers or one sector. A broad stock fund can be one way to gain exposure across more companies, but check its holdings and mandate rather than relying on the fund label.

Spread exposure across asset categories

Diversification also means considering different asset categories, commonly stocks, bonds, and cash or cash equivalents. Stocks can fluctuate more over short periods; bonds are generally less volatile and offer more modest returns; cash equivalents have low investment-loss risk, but inflation can reduce their purchasing power. These are general tradeoffs, not a recommended allocation for an individual.

The appropriate mix depends chiefly on your investment goal, the time until you need the money, and your risk tolerance, according to the SEC’s asset allocation and diversification guidance. Consider whether a substantial fall in the portfolio would jeopardize the goal, not only whether you are comfortable with price swings in theory.

  • FOR THE WAY HOUSEHOLDS ACTUALLY ORGANIZE — Built for the household record-keeper getting financial papers in one place, the adult child helping aging parents centralize accounts and policies, and anyone preparing a spouse, executor, or financial advisor with everything they would need to step in and find what matters.

Set a target allocation before changing positions

Decide on a target mix that reflects the goal, time horizon, and losses you can financially and emotionally withstand. Then compare your current portfolio with that target. This makes the decision about reducing AI-stock exposure part of an overall plan rather than a reaction to headlines or recent performance.

When comparing investments, look at breadth of exposure, overlap with what you already own, potential volatility and loss, liquidity, and fees. The SEC’s investment product overview identifies risk and return, fees, diversification, liquidity, and fraud as factors to consider. No single product or fund wrapper guarantees a diversified portfolio.

Plan how to move toward the target

Reducing a concentrated position can involve selling some holdings, directing new contributions to areas that are underrepresented, or using both approaches. The right route depends on your circumstances. In particular, the tax consequences of selling appreciated shares vary with jurisdiction, account type, tax basis, and other personal factors; there is no universal tax rule that determines when to sell. Investors with significant tax or employer-equity constraints may benefit from qualified individualized advice.

Rebalance when market moves change the mix

After setting a target, monitor whether market gains or losses have pushed the portfolio away from it. Rebalancing means bringing the mix back toward the chosen allocation by selling some holdings or adding to underweighted categories. Investor.gov describes periodic reviews—such as every six or twelve months—or acting when an allocation crosses a preset deviation threshold. These are examples, not a schedule that fits everyone; rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently.

Keep diversification’s limits in view

Diversification can reduce dependence on a small number of companies, sectors, or asset categories, but it cannot remove all investment risk. As the SEC’s Investor.gov puts it, “Diversification can’t guarantee that your investments won’t suffer if the market drops.” A broader portfolio can still lose value in a market decline.
