WordPress places the photos into rows automatically. Use a Columns block instead when every tile needs its own text, button, or other nested content.
Use the Gallery block for a normal photo grid
The Gallery block is the quickest built-in way to display several photos in columns and rows. WordPress documentation describes it as a block that adds multiple photos and automatically arranges them in a gallery.

- Open the post or page in the block editor.
- Click the + inserter and search for Gallery, or type
/gallery. - Choose Upload to add new files or Media Library to select existing images.
- Select the photos and insert them into the gallery.
- In the block settings, set Columns to the number of images you want across each row.
The Gallery block supports 1 to 8 columns, limited by the number of images in the gallery. For example, a six-photo gallery cannot fill eight columns because it has fewer than eight images.
Set cropping and image resolution
Choose whether to crop images
Turn on Crop images to fit when photos have different proportions and you want consistent tile heights across each row. Cropping can remove part of the original framing. Leave it off when preserving each image’s natural shape matters more than uniform rows.

#1 Best Overall
Select an image size
Depending on your theme and the uploaded file, Gallery settings may offer Full Size, Large, Medium, or Thumbnail. Select the largest practical size for the visual quality you need; the available choices are controlled by theme support and the source image.
Use Columns when each photo needs custom content
A Columns block is better for custom cards rather than a simple collection of photos. It lets you place an Image block together with a heading, paragraph, button, or other blocks in each column.
- Insert a Columns block from the block inserter.
- Choose a column layout.
- In each column, add an Image block and any supporting heading, text, or button.
- Replace the placeholder content and adjust each nested block’s settings.
This approach gives every tile independent content control, but it requires more setup than a Gallery block.
Convert an existing image block
If an image is already on the page, select its Image block, open Transform, and choose Columns or Gallery when those options are available. This avoids deleting and reinserting the existing block.
Create a gallery in the Classic Editor
The Classic Editor uses a different workflow:
- Go to Media > Create Gallery.
- Choose existing media or upload photos.
- Set the number of columns and the image size.
- Choose whether each image links to the media file or to its attachment page.
- Insert the gallery into the editor.
Make unequal tiles in WordPress.com Gallery Grid
On WordPress.com, the Gallery Grid layout can create an intentionally uneven arrangement. Increase an image’s Column span to make it wider, or increase its Row span to make it taller. Use these controls when a uniform set of tiles is less useful than a varied editorial layout.
Gallery or Columns: which should you choose?
| Need | Gallery block | Columns block |
|---|---|---|
| Setup speed | Fast: select multiple images and set Columns. | Slower: build and edit each column separately. |
| Per-image text or buttons | Designed primarily for images; no independent card structure. | Best for an image plus its own heading, paragraph, button, or other blocks. |
| Uniform row height | Use Crop images to fit, with the trade-off of changed framing. | Control each nested Image block independently. |
| Natural photo proportions | Leave cropping off to preserve the source shapes. | Set image behavior separately within each column. |
| Simple photo grid | Recommended choice. | Usually more work than necessary. |
| Unequal tile sizes on WordPress.com | Gallery Grid supports Column span and Row span. | Requires manually arranging custom columns. |
Fix common layout problems
The photos are not in the number of columns I expected
Check the Gallery block’s Columns setting and confirm that the gallery contains enough images to populate that many columns. The control cannot display more columns than the number of photos.
The rows look uneven
Enable Crop images to fit to standardize tile heights. If keeping the complete image is more important, leave cropping disabled and accept varied proportions.
I need a caption, call to action, or description for every image
Use a Columns block and place an Image block plus the required text or button inside each column. Gallery is intended for faster image-only arrangements.
The image-size options are different on my site
Available choices such as Full Size, Large, Medium, and Thumbnail depend on your theme and the original upload. A missing option is therefore not necessarily an error.
