That displays the contents of a text file; it does not identify the video playing or update the title automatically. For automatic changes, you need something to write the current title to that file, such as a compatible plugin or a script. If your playlist runs through OBS’s VLC Video Source, Tuna is one possible plugin route.
Set up a title label in OBS
- In OBS, open the scene used for the 24/7 stream. Add a Text source and place it above the video source in the source list so the label appears over the video.
- Open the Text source properties, enable the text-from-file option, and select the text file that will hold the title.
- Style and position the text so viewers can read it against the video. Check the rendered output, not just the source preview, to confirm the placement and contrast work for your scene.
The OBS Project documents Text Sources as customizable text sources that can read from a file: OBS Text Sources. The text source is the display layer; it does not discover which video is playing.
Make the title update when the video changes
A changing playlist needs an updater or integration that writes the current title into the selected file. A manually edited file can work when the title is fixed, but it will become stale when playback moves to another video. OBS’s text-from-file option alone does not identify arbitrary media or maintain a title file.
Use Tuna with an OBS VLC Video Source
If your playlist is played through OBS’s VLC Video Source, Tuna is a possible route for showing current media information. OBS documents playlist support for VLC Video Source and notes that VLC must be installed for this source type to appear: OBS VLC Video Source. - Confirm VLC Video Source is available in your OBS installation and that VLC is installed.
- Check Tuna compatibility with your installed OBS release and operating system.
- Test that the plugin reads the title field you want from your playlist before relying on it in a continuous broadcast. Exact field behavior may depend on your setup.
Use a script or integration to write the file
If your playback setup exposes the current media title, a script or other compatible integration can write that value to the file used by the Text source. Choose an updater that works with your player and OBS version, and confirm it replaces the old title cleanly at each transition. The specific implementation depends on the media source; the OBS text source itself does not provide that title detection.
Use a Browser Source for a custom overlay
An OBS Browser Source can render a URL or local web page in your scene. Add the source, set an appropriate width and height, and design the title card in the page. The page or a companion integration still needs a reliable way to obtain and refresh the current title; Browser Source is a renderer, not a universal detector for titles from unrelated media sources. Choose the route that fits your setup

Verify the title in the live output
- Start playback and confirm the intended title appears in the actual stream output.
- Let the playlist move to another video and check that the displayed title changes at the transition.
- Test what happens when a video has no title metadata; make sure stale text is cleared or replaced with an appropriate fallback.
- Restart OBS and confirm the source still points to the correct file and the updater resumes as expected.
These checks catch common setup failures: text that is hidden behind the video, a file that remains unchanged, a plugin that does not read the intended metadata, or an overlay page that has no title-data feed.
