Keep collector’s editions away from direct sunlight, limit how long they are lit, and choose display and cleaning methods for each item’s materials. A case can help limit dust and improve security, but it cannot stop visible light from causing cumulative damage—and a sealed case is not automatically suitable for every collectible.
Choose a display spot that limits light exposure
Light damage can permanently change an item’s appearance and physical condition. The Library of Congress explains that exposure is cumulative: dim light over a long period can be as damaging as brighter light over a shorter period. Effects can include fading, yellowing, darkening, bleaching, embrittlement, and other color changes; conservation treatment usually cannot reverse the underlying damage. This guidance is aimed mainly at library and archival materials, so treat it as a preservation principle rather than a care manual for every figure or finish.
- Place the display away from windows and direct sunlight. Sunlight is intense, contains high levels of UV, and is difficult to control.
- Use modest display lighting, and turn it off when you are not viewing the collection. Reducing both light intensity and exposure time helps limit risk.
- Do not treat UV-filtering glazing as a guarantee against fading. It can reduce UV exposure, but visible light can still damage collection materials.
The Library of Congress recommends reducing ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation, and says UV-absorbing glazing may protect items when UV cannot be removed from the light source. It also cautions that visible light remains damaging even if UV and IR are removed. Its numerical lighting and rotation recommendations apply to defined classes of library and archival materials, not universally to consumer collectibles.
Compare open shelving with an enclosed display case

The Library of Congress recommends secure exhibition cases or secure wall attachment to help prevent theft and vandalism. For a home collection, a case is one layer of protection—not a substitute for controlling light or choosing a suitable environment.

Keep case and room conditions suitable
Temperature, relative humidity, pollutants, and security can all affect displayed collections. Avoid placing a case in a hot or damp location, and do not assume that a tightly sealed case is automatically appropriate: conditions inside it can differ from those in the room.
The Library of Congress advises institutions to monitor temperature and relative humidity in cases and display spaces against parameters appropriate to the materials. Its guidance for institutional case construction also calls for chemically inert materials that pass the Oddy test or the Photographic Activity Test (PAT), ISO 18916. Those are not blanket certifications for ordinary consumer cases. Unless a seller substantiates a compatibility claim for the materials involved, do not assume a case is “archival safe.”

Care for each item according to its materials
A collector’s edition may combine paper, plastic, painted surfaces, metal, and electronic components. These materials do not necessarily tolerate the same cleaning products or handling. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for the specific edition and item; do not apply one cleaning recipe to the whole set.
- Art books and printed inserts: Treat them as light-sensitive paper objects. Keep them out of direct sun, minimize display lighting, and avoid assuming that advice for a figure or case finish is suitable for paper.
- Figures and statues: Check the maker’s instructions for the particular material and surface finish before dusting or cleaning. A painted finish may have different needs from an unpainted component.
- Steelbooks and other metal components: Use item-specific guidance rather than assuming a polish or household cleaner is safe for the finish.
- Electronic items: Follow the maker’s instructions for the device and its components; general advice for paper or display-case materials does not establish a safe cleaning method.
If instructions are unavailable, do not assume that a solvent, adhesive, polish, or other cleaner is compatible. Avoid experimenting on a visible surface, and seek guidance from the item’s manufacturer or a conservator if the object is valuable or already deteriorating.

A practical display and protection routine
- Check the items: Identify the materials in each piece and look for maker-provided care instructions before choosing a cleaner, case, or display method.
- Select the location: Choose a spot away from windows and direct sun, and avoid hot or damp areas.
- Choose the enclosure: Use open shelving for easy access or a suitable secure case when reducing dust access and improving security are priorities. Check what the case is made from and avoid unsupported compatibility claims.
- Control lighting: Keep display lighting modest and switch it off when the collection is not being viewed. Consider UV-absorbing glazing if UV cannot be removed from the light source, while remembering that glazing does not block all damaging visible light.
- Check the display periodically: Look for changes to the items and, if using a case, pay attention to its internal conditions as well as the surrounding room. Adjust the setup if it is exposed to excessive light, heat, or dampness.
Why collector’s editions deserve preservation care
Video game collecting and preservation includes more than the playable software: associated objects and materials can also matter to collectors and archives. A 2008 review by Megan A. Winget and Caitlin Murray surveys videogame collecting and preservation practice, but it does not provide current product specifications or home cleaning instructions. That makes material-specific maker guidance especially important for a particular figure, statue, steelbook, or printed insert.
