To stop websites from playing audio in Chrome on an Android phone, open Chrome > More (⋮) > Settings > Site settings > Sound, then turn off the sound permission. This blocks ordinary website audio across Chrome while leaving your phone’s general media volume unchanged.
Turn off sound for every website
- Open the Chrome app on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap the More button (⋮) in the top-right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Under Advanced, tap Site settings. (On some Chrome versions, Site settings appears directly in the main Settings list.)
- Tap Sound.
- Turn off the sound permission.
Chrome allows sites to play sounds by default. Disabling this setting prevents websites from playing ordinary audio through Chrome until you turn the permission back on.
Mute one website only
Use a site-specific permission when most websites should keep working normally but one site is noisy.
- Open the website in Chrome.
- Tap the site-information icon to the left of the address bar. Depending on the page and Chrome version, this may appear as a lock or another site-controls icon.
- Tap Permissions.
- Tap Sound.
- Select the option that blocks sound.
To remove the custom rule later, return to the same site-information menu and tap Reset permissions. The site will then use Chrome’s current default sound setting.

Choose the setting that matches what you want to block

Does disabling Chrome sound block the microphone?
No. Chrome’s Sound permission controls audio playback from websites; it does not revoke microphone access. To manage microphone access, open Chrome > More (⋮) > Settings > Site settings > Microphone. Camera access is managed in the same Site settings area under Camera.
Block protected music or video separately
Some streaming services use protected (DRM) content, which has its own control. Open Chrome > More (⋮) > Settings > Site settings > Protected content, then choose Blocked if you want to prevent protected playback, or Ask first if you want Chrome to request permission before allowing it.

This setting is separate from ordinary website sound. Changing Sound alone may not produce the result you expect on a protected-content service.
Which option should you use?
- All websites are too noisy: Disable Sound globally.
- Only one site causes unwanted audio: Block Sound in that site’s Permissions menu.
- You are concerned about eavesdropping: Review Microphone permissions; disabling Sound does not address microphone capture.
- A DRM streaming site still behaves differently: Review Protected content separately.
Restore Chrome website audio
To allow audio again for every site, return to Chrome > More (⋮) > Settings > Site settings > Sound and turn the permission back on. For a single site, open its site-information menu, choose Permissions > Sound, and allow sound, or use Reset permissions to remove the site-specific rule.
