For most site owners, install and activate the WordPress.org plugin Disable Emojis (GDPR friendly). It removes WordPress’s emoji compatibility layer—detection scripts, emoji styles, DNS-prefetch hints and the TinyMCE emoji integration—while allowing modern browsers to render emoji characters normally. It does not erase emojis already stored in posts, prevent native browser emoji rendering or disable text emoticons such as :).

What disabling emojis in WordPress actually means

WordPress adds compatibility code for older browsers. The change described here removes that WordPress-provided layer, not every emoji glyph from your content.

  • Removed by the plugin: WordPress emoji detection scripts and styles, the emoji DNS-prefetch hint, and the TinyMCE emoji plugin.
  • Still possible: Browsers with built-in emoji support can continue displaying emoji characters in posts, pages and other output.
  • Unaffected: Existing emoji characters remain in the database, and text emoticons such as :) continue to work.

WordPress documents print_emoji_detection_script() as the function that prints the inline detection script in the administration or front-end footer, depending on context. The separate emoji_svg_url hook changes where emoji SVG files are hosted; changing that URL is not the same as disabling WordPress emoji support.

Disable emojis with the plugin method

Install and activate Disable Emojis (GDPR friendly)

  1. Sign in to WordPress with an account that can manage plugins.
  2. Open Plugins > Add New Plugin.
  3. Search for Disable Emojis (GDPR friendly).
  4. Confirm that the result is the WordPress.org plugin with that exact name, then select Install Now.
  5. Select Activate.

The plugin is intended to work without a settings screen. Activation applies its removals to the WordPress-generated compatibility behavior documented in its listing.

Confirm the result

  1. Open a logged-out page on your site and view its source or network requests.
  2. Search the generated markup and requests for WordPress emoji assets, including wp-emoji-release.min.js, emoji styles, or a DNS-prefetch entry for s.w.org.
  3. Open the editor and check that the TinyMCE emoji integration is no longer being added by WordPress.
  4. Test a page containing an emoji in current browsers. A visible emoji does not prove that the WordPress compatibility layer is still active; native browser rendering can produce the same result.

Plugin details and version caveats

The WordPress.org listing checked on September 30, 2026, showed version 1.9.3, a changelog entry dated June 5, 2026, more than 60,000 active installations, and testing through WordPress 7.0.4. These directory values can change, so check the current listing before installing or documenting them.

The same listing contains inconsistent minimum-version information: its requirements section says PHP 7.4 or newer and WordPress 5.0 or newer, while separate directory metadata reports WordPress 4.8 or newer. Treat the current plugin page and its installation check as authoritative for your site rather than relying on one number copied from an older reference.

When custom code is appropriate

A developer can study WordPress’s emoji implementation and the print_emoji_detection_script() reference, then remove the relevant behavior in a site-specific plugin or child theme. However, the available documentation does not establish one current, universal PHP snippet that reliably disables every emoji surface on every WordPress version. Avoid copying an unverified snippet into a production theme.

If you implement a custom approach, keep it in a child theme or site-specific plugin so a theme update does not overwrite it. Check the front end, administration/editor screens, feeds and generated markup on the exact WordPress version you run. Re-test after WordPress core or theme updates.

Plugin versus custom code

Consideration Disable Emojis (GDPR friendly) Custom implementation
Setup effort Install and activate from the Plugins screen. Requires WordPress/PHP knowledge and site-specific testing.
Documented scope Removes detection scripts and styles, DNS-prefetch behavior and TinyMCE emoji integration. Scope depends on the code and may miss an output path.
Maintenance Plugin updates can track WordPress changes; review updates before applying them. You own compatibility testing when WordPress changes.
Customization and inspection Less control over individual hooks, but the package is simpler for non-developers. More control and auditability, with greater risk of incomplete removal.

No independently published performance test establishes a specific speed improvement from this change. Removing compatibility requests may reduce a small amount of front-end work, but the actual effect depends on the theme, plugins, cache and browsers used.

Privacy: what the DNS-prefetch removal does—and does not—promise

The plugin removes the DNS-prefetch hint for WordPress’s emoji CDN host, s.w.org, and describes that as a privacy improvement. That is a technical change to connection hints, not a legal determination. The plugin explicitly advises site owners to obtain legal advice about GDPR; installing it does not make a site GDPR compliant.

Troubleshooting common expectations

“wp-emoji-release.min.js still downloads”

Clear page, object and CDN caches, then check the logged-out page source again. Verify that the plugin is active and that another optimization, compatibility or theme component is not re-enqueuing an emoji asset. Test the exact URL served to visitors rather than only an administrator view.

“Emojis still appear after activation”

That is expected when the browser has native emoji support. The plugin removes WordPress’s fallback machinery; it does not remove Unicode emoji characters from content or disable the browser’s own renderer.

“I need to remove emoji characters from posts”

This plugin is not a content-cleanup tool. Removing characters requires a separate, deliberate database or content-editing operation with backups and a rollback plan; disabling compatibility scripts will not alter stored text.
