There is no single switch that turns off AI everywhere on a phone, computer, or account. You have to change settings in each operating system, app, and service—and some features, including Google Search AI Overviews and Meta AI entry points, cannot be removed completely. As of October 30, 2026, the most useful approach is to identify the surface you want to limit, then choose whether to disable it, restrict what it can access, or simply hide or mute it.
The instructions below cover current documented controls. Menu names and availability can vary by software version, device, language, country, account, and administrator policy. If a path differs on your device, search Settings for the feature name. Turning off one AI feature does not necessarily disable AI in other apps from the same company.
What does “turn off AI” mean on a phone or computer?
It can mean several different things, and the distinction matters. A setting might disable one feature, limit the data an assistant can access, hide a shortcut, mute a conversation, or remove an app. None of those actions automatically disables AI across every service on the device.

- Partially limited: An assistant remains available, but loses a capability such as reading the current webpage or launching hands-free.
- Hidden or muted: A button, prompt, or chat becomes less visible, but the underlying service may remain available elsewhere.
- Unavailable to disable: The service offers no supported master switch. Google says AI Overviews cannot be turned off, although its Web filter provides a text-links-only view for an individual search.
It also helps to separate feature controls from data controls. Turning off a feature may stop future use, but it may not delete conversation history, previously saved snapshots, or other stored data. Check the relevant history or deletion controls separately when that is your goal.

How do I turn off Apple Intelligence on an iPhone or iPad?
Apple’s controls depend on the iOS version. On iOS 26, use Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn off Apple Intelligence. On iOS 27 or later, Apple’s current guidance points to Settings > Siri and the Turn Off Siri flow; check the on-screen choices because the path and wording differ by version.
Switching off Apple Intelligence is not the only relevant control. Apple provides separate settings for features such as notification summaries, Mail summaries, Messages summaries, priority notifications, Writing Tools, image creation, and third-party intelligence extensions such as ChatGPT. If you want to stop one particular behavior while keeping other features, look for its specific control rather than assuming one switch covers it all.
- Open Settings and search for the feature you want to change, such as “summaries,” “Writing Tools,” or “Apple Intelligence.”
- On iOS 26, open Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn Apple Intelligence off if you want the broader setting disabled. On iOS 27 or later, follow the current Siri settings flow.
- Review the individual summary, image, writing, and extension controls if you need a more targeted change.
- If the device is managed or used by a child, check Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. Apple says these restrictions can limit features including Writing Tools, image creation, and intelligence extensions.
Apple Intelligence availability depends on device, language, and region. Apple’s current compatibility guidance includes iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 or later, subject to its availability conditions. If a setting is missing, the device may not support that feature or it may not be available for the selected language or region.
How do I disable Gemini or stop it launching on Android?
Android offers several different controls: stop hands-free activation, block use from the lock screen, or select another default digital assistant. Removing the Gemini app alone does not necessarily change which assistant Android launches by default.
- Stop “Hey Google” activation: Open the Gemini app, go to Settings > Talk to Gemini hands-free, and turn off Hey Google.
- Block lock-screen use: In Gemini settings, open Gemini on lock screen and turn off Use Gemini without unlocking.
- Change the default assistant: Open Android Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app, then select None or another available assistant.
The labels can vary between Android versions and manufacturers. Search Settings for “digital assistant” if the path differs. These changes affect Gemini’s activation or default-assistant role; they do not disable every Google AI feature in Search, Chrome, or other apps.
How do I turn off Galaxy AI?
Samsung’s Galaxy AI controls are separate from Gemini’s Android assistant settings. On supported Galaxy devices, look in Settings > Galaxy AI. Some models or software releases place the controls under Settings > Advanced features > Advanced intelligence. Disable the features you do not want individually; do not assume changing Gemini’s default-assistant setting also changes Galaxy AI.

Can I turn off Google Search AI Overviews?
No—not completely through a supported setting. Google describes AI Overviews as a core Search feature and says they cannot be turned off. After searching, select the Web filter to see text-based links without features such as AI Overviews.

The Web filter is a per-search workaround, not a permanent preference. Search Labs experiments have a separate AI in Search toggle, but changing that experimental setting should not be confused with switching off AI Overviews for all searches. Adding “-ai” to a query is not Google’s documented, persistent control.
How do I block AI features in Chrome?
In desktop Chrome, open Settings > AI Innovations and turn On-device AI off. Chrome says this deletes downloaded on-device generative models, prevents them from being downloaded again while the setting remains off, and disables features that rely on those models.
The change is limited to features that use Chrome’s on-device models. Google warns that some AI features do not rely on those models and may continue to work, so this is not a browser-wide switch for every AI service or feature.
Chrome Help lists approximately 20 GB of free disk space for eligible devices to download on-device AI models. Treat that as an approximate figure for those downloads, not a universal hardware requirement; Chrome says specific requirements can change.
How do I stop Gmail and other Google Workspace apps using smart features?
Google separates its smart-feature settings into multiple controls. In Gmail on the web, open Settings > See all settings > General. The Smart features section controls app-level features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet. A separate Workspace setting covers features such as Gemini in Workspace, personalized search, and automatic Calendar events from Gmail; another setting controls smart features in other Google products.

- Find the Smart features section to change app-level personalization in Gmail, Chat, and Meet, including features such as Smart Compose, Smart Reply, automatic filtering, and summary cards.
- Open Manage Workspace smart feature settings to review Workspace smart features and smart features in other Google products. Turn off the category or categories you do not want.
These controls are not AI-only switches. Disabling them can remove non-AI conveniences too, such as flight or invitation events appearing automatically in Calendar. Review the consequences shown in the setting before confirming. A change in Gmail’s app-level setting does not necessarily change the separate Workspace or other-products settings.
How do I remove Copilot from Windows?
To uninstall the consumer Copilot app, Microsoft documents this path: open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the Copilot app, open its menu, and choose Uninstall. This removes that app, not every Copilot feature in Windows or Microsoft’s other products.
Copilot may still appear in Edge, Microsoft 365 apps, Notepad, Paint, Outlook, Teams, or other services. Those surfaces have their own controls or administrator policies. For managed devices, Microsoft documents using AppLocker to prevent the Copilot app from being installed or launched. Microsoft says the older Turn Off Windows Copilot policy is subject to near-term deprecation, so it should not be treated as the preferred current enterprise method.

How do I limit Copilot in Microsoft Edge?
In Edge’s Copilot and AI settings, turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web to prevent Copilot from using the current webpage, its title, open tabs, or browser history as browsing context. This limits what Copilot can use; it does not remove the Copilot button or disable the assistant itself.
If the control is missing or its label differs, search Edge Settings for “Copilot” or “context.” Work or school policies may also affect which options are available.

How do I turn off Windows Recall?
Recall is available only on Copilot+ PCs and saves periodic screen snapshots only after the user opts in. For a new user who does not opt in, snapshot saving remains off by default. To stop saving snapshots after enabling the feature, open Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots and turn off Save snapshots.

How do I block AI enhancements in Firefox?
Firefox desktop version 148 introduces a browser-level AI Controls panel. Open Settings > AI Controls and enable Block AI enhancements. Mozilla says this blocks current and future Firefox AI features and suppresses promotional prompts.
You can also set individual features to Blocked, including translations, PDF image alt text, AI-enhanced tab groups, link-preview key points, speech recognition, and the AI chatbot sidebar. This gives you the choice of blocking all Firefox-provided enhancements or controlling specific ones.
The setting does not stop browser extensions from independently sending information to third-party AI services. If you use extensions, review their permissions and privacy policies separately; Firefox’s built-in control does not govern what an extension does outside Firefox’s own AI features.
Can I turn off Meta AI in WhatsApp?
There is no single master switch that removes Meta AI from Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. Depending on the app and features available to your account, you can avoid the assistant, mute or delete its chat, or use controls such as restricted chats or advanced chat privacy in WhatsApp. These actions reduce or hide particular entry points; they do not guarantee that Meta AI disappears from every Meta app.

On Android, WhatsApp also documents a separate control for Google’s on-screen AI features. If enabled, those features can view visible WhatsApp messages and notifications. To limit that access specifically for WhatsApp, open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Screen access > Proactive Assistance and disable it. That change affects screen access for WhatsApp; it does not disable other Google AI features such as Gemini voice assistance.
How can a school or employer restrict AI on managed Android devices?
Organizations can use Android Enterprise policy controls to restrict screen-driven AI, Gemini web access, app installation, URLs, work-profile data sharing, and the Android AICore service. For example, administrators can use ASSIST_CONTENT_ALLOWED or DISALLOW_ASSIST_CONTENT policies to control whether an assistant or Circle to Search can read screen content. Managed Chrome policies can also block access to gemini.google.com.
These are organization-level controls, not settings individual users can necessarily change. Availability depends on device, language, country, subscription, and corporate-account configuration. Blocking screen access or services may improve privacy and policy compliance, but can also remove useful assistant functions; administrators should select restrictions that match their actual requirements.

What should I check after changing a setting?
- Confirm the scope: Is the setting for one feature, one app, your account, the whole device, or an organization-managed profile?
- Check related apps: A change in one company’s app may not affect its browser, operating-system integration, or other services.
- Look for data controls: If your goal is deletion, check history, saved snapshots, or stored conversations separately from the feature toggle.
- Weigh side effects: Shared smart-feature settings can also disable conveniences such as writing suggestions, summaries, or automatic Calendar events.
- Check version and eligibility: Confirm the OS or browser version, device model, language, region, account type, and any work or school policy.
There is no universal switch. The most reliable outcome comes from changing each relevant control and being precise about whether you want to disable a feature, restrict its access, hide an entry point, or delete data already stored.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off an AI feature delete my old conversations?
Not necessarily. A feature toggle and an account’s conversation-history controls are separate, so review the service’s history and deletion settings if you want previously stored chats removed.
Can my employer turn AI features back on for a work phone?
An organization can manage device and account policies, and those policies may change which controls appear or whether a feature is available. Ask your administrator which restrictions apply to the work profile or managed device.
Will switching off smart features make Gmail stop working?
Gmail remains usable, but some personalization and convenience features may stop, including Smart Compose, Smart Reply, filtering, or summary cards. The Workspace and other-products settings can also affect integrations such as automatic Calendar events.
Do browser AI controls block AI in every website I visit?
No. Firefox’s Block AI enhancements setting applies to Firefox’s own features, not independent extensions or AI services operated by websites. Review extension permissions and each service’s privacy controls separately.
