To digitize DVDs you have the right to copy, read each disc with a computer’s DVD drive, turn accessible video into a media file, organize the files, and test playback on the devices you plan to use. For source-quality preservation, remux to MKV with MakeMKV; to make smaller or more device-compatible files, transcode with HandBrake. These are different workflows, and neither guarantees access to every protected disc.
Choose the right DVD-to-file workflow
First decide whether preserving the DVD’s video stream or saving storage space matters more. A remux places existing tracks in a new container without re-encoding the video; a transcode re-encodes video and can create a smaller file, with trade-offs in processing time and image quality.
| Approach | What it does | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remux with MakeMKV | Extracts accessible video, audio, and subtitle tracks into an MKV container without re-encoding the video. MakeMKV says it does not change or compress video and audio, apart from some audio options. Plex describes this workflow; see the MakeMKV FAQ. | Keeping the source video stream when storage is available. | Files use more space than a smaller transcode and do not improve the DVD’s resolution. |
| Transcode with HandBrake | Re-encodes accessible video to a format such as MP4, MKV, or WebM; it can also crop or resize and process interlacing or telecine. HandBrake’s documentation explains its features. | Reducing file size or targeting a device’s supported formats. | Requires processing time and settings choices; video is converted rather than passed through unchanged. |
Storage depends on the disc, retained tracks and extras, and your chosen settings. The sources provide no dependable universal file-size estimate per DVD. Make a small trial batch, check the resulting files and estimate the total before buying storage.
What you need before converting discs
- A DVD-reading optical drive: Use a computer with a built-in drive or a compatible USB external DVD drive. Check that the drive reads DVDs and that its connection works with your computer. A Blu-ray drive is unnecessary for a DVD-only collection.
- Conversion software: MakeMKV is an option for remuxing accessible disc content; HandBrake can transcode sources it can open.
- Space for the files: An external hard drive or NAS can store a media library. Choose capacity after estimating a trial batch, allowing for retained audio, subtitles, and extras.
- A separate backup target: If preserving the collection matters, keep another copy on a separate drive or other backup destination. The working library alone is not a backup, and no single drive is failure-proof.
Digitize a disc and check the result
- Confirm that you may make a copy. Copyright and anti-circumvention rules vary by jurisdiction and circumstance. Owning a disc does not establish a universal right to bypass protection or make a digital copy.
- Insert the DVD in the optical drive. If the computer lacks one, connect a compatible external DVD drive and confirm the disc is readable.
- Choose remuxing or transcoding. Use MakeMKV when retaining the source video stream is the priority and you have room for larger files. Use HandBrake when a smaller file or specific playback format is the priority. HandBrake says it does not defeat or circumvent DRM and does not work with DRM-protected video; it is not a universal solution for commercial DVDs.
- Select the tracks and settings you need. With a transcode, choose a device-appropriate preset and retain the audio and subtitle tracks you want. Inspect the result rather than assuming a preset suits every player.
- Test playback on the intended device. Try a sample file on the least capable target—such as the TV, tablet, or player most likely to have format limits—before processing the entire collection. Check video, audio, and subtitles.
- Repeat and organize. Once the sample works, process the remaining discs with the same choices where appropriate, then store and back up the files.
Organize files for convenient viewing
Use consistent folders and filenames so a media-library app can identify films and episodes. If details matter to you, keep a simple inventory of disc labels, editions, languages, and preferred audio or subtitle tracks. There is no single mandatory naming scheme established by the software sources; consistency is the practical goal.

For local playback, VLC can open a DVD or a media file. For a cataloged personal library, Plex can organize and play media you have the right to provide. Plex does not support DVD ISO or IMG images, or VIDEO_TS folder structures, as library videos; use supported media files instead. See Plex’s disk-image format explanation and its guidance on Direct Play and Direct Stream.
Check device compatibility before converting everything
Successful playback depends on the receiving device supporting the file’s container, video and audio formats, and selected subtitle streams. If a client cannot play a stream directly, Plex may need to transcode it on the server; an unsupported combination can also prevent playback. Testing on the least capable device helps reveal problems early. If broad compatibility matters, consider a HandBrake transcode with suitable settings, then test that file on the same device.

Copy protection and legal limits
File conversion and permission to copy are separate questions. HandBrake says it does not circumvent copy protection and advises users to copy only material they own or have the right to copy; it recommends seeking legal advice if uncertain. VideoLAN’s documentation notes that using or distributing libdvdcss is controversial in some countries, including the United States under the DMCA. Check current rules where you live rather than assuming that disc ownership creates an exemption. HandBrake’s documentation, VideoLAN’s legal concerns page, and Plex’s guidance on personal media provide relevant context; this is not individualized legal advice.
